Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2

As I said with the first in the series, fighting is probably my least favourite genre of game next to horror, but the DB Universe was enough to get me to want to play these games.

This ended up being essentially more of the same as the first game, albeit with some much improved changes to some game mechanics and side quest stuff, along with some cool additions to the story.

More of the same ended up being cool though, even though I played the first one just a few months ago. At this point, I think I've had enough for the time being, so it's a good thing I played this not too long after its release so if there does end up being a 3rd one I have some time to get excited for it.

That's interesting, it's one of my favorite PS3 games. Why didn't you like it?

I obviously can't speak for Roba, but for me, I really liked the core gameplay a lot. Being a scenario-based strategy game though, it lives and dies with its individual missions, and that's where in ran into problems.

A quarter of them were fantastic, a quarter were pretty good, a quarter were blah, and a quarter were poorly thought out. I can't say that I've played a scenario-based strategy game that was so inconsistent. It is quite baffling.

That's interesting, it's one of my favorite PS3 games. Why didn't you like it?

I whined about this enough in my 2016 game ranking topic as I was playing it, but what it boiled down to was that it honestly didn't feel like Valkyria Chronicles was truly a strategy RPG. There were a few missions that felt like actual battles, but mostly it was a matter of figuring out a broken method that would trivialize everything. In one mission I ignored the whole level and took the target out with snipers. In another where units randomly spawned in halfway through I just restarted, positioned my guys where I knew enemies would appear, and then won in a single turn once they did. Even the fun missions usually ended with a scout charging forward alone. That isn't strategy, that's a badly designed puzzle game.

EDIT: And I just realized I previously praised Lost Dimension for having a unique solution to a mission's problem when I teleported my dude through a door, but there was exactly one short mission where that was possible and it wasn't an intended solution to the level. In Valkyria Chronicles, I save-scummed like crazy, killed one enemy unit for every action, frequently charged a scout forward and took the base way before I should've realistically been able to reach it... then got a B rank. I don't know why but they clearly balanced this game around the BS tactics.

Even though I played the Steam rerelease, I'm counting its original release date (in 1993) for this challenge. A classic adventure game, and I was actually able to solve a good deal of the puzzles in it without having to resort to a walkthrough!

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance HD

Good game, and an enjoyable experience. Kingdom Hearts is one of my favourite series of all-time, though, and this game ranks near or at the bottom of it. That probably speaks more to my love of the series than it does about the quality of this game.

I was iffy on the drop system to start, but the worlds were different enough for each character that it ended up being pretty cool by the end. I found the entire companion system to be unnecessary and useless, though.

Finished the game in just under 3 hours on normal. Even though it was short, I honestly enjoyed it more than DDD. The graphics and combat on the new engine are great, and I'm more hyped than ever for Kingdom Hearts 3.
