LIMBO (PC)

Quick few hour game session to knock this one out. Ambiance was great, but I was kinda over the game by the time I hit the end.

Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling (PC)

Really cute game! I played through the first three chapters with hard mode on, but I kinda got sick of thinking so hard. Although, I ended up stomping everything near the end of the game once I had a decent amount of medal points.

Played this because of similarities to PM1 and TTYD. This definitely scratched that long-held itch of mine (PM1 is my favorite game of all time). I wouldn't put Bug Fables in the same tier as those two, but it was definitely close enough while being its own thing.

All achievements completed.

I have seen all of: Nolan, Tarantino, Miyazaki, Wes Anderson, PTA, Villeneuve (including his obnoxiously hard-to-find first two films), Fincher, Rian Johnson, James Cameron, Coen Brothers, Wachowskis, Bong Joon-ho, JJ Abrams, and Nora Ephron.

I'm basically continuously working on some director's filmography. Currently working on Edgar Wright - just need to see his directorial-debut.

Cool Hand Luke

8/10 eggs

Really enjoyed this one. A whole lot of good dialogue and a cool guy with a handful of nothin'.

Thought this was a very successful character study into Luke: What happens when you put an anti-establishment man into an environment with some of the strictest bosses and rules? The entire movie was resting on Newman's shoulders and I think he nailed it.

Was SO bummed out when they caught him after his second escape attempt.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople - 7/10 I don't remember an iota of this movie (saw 3 years ago), but gave it this score on my Letterboxd. I have great hatred for my poor movie retention.

Perfect Blue

8/10 I'll be the one asshole who doesn't give it a 9.

Movie was incredibly successful at making me feel unsettled beginning from the acted rape scene through to the ending. Especially got into it when they started using those hard-cuts back to Mima in her bedroom; I love when a film is good at putting you in the shoes of a character losing their mind.

Felt bad for Mima from the get-go because she lacked any real support structure. I was frustrated with Rumi the entire time for almost seemingly giving a fuck, but not being successful at it. Definitely makes sense in hindsight - shoutouts to the script.

question for everyone: do you have any examples of movies you significantly changed your mind about after revisiting them after a long time?

I didn't jive with Burn After Reading when I first saw it. Years later I rewatched it and found it to be one of the funniest movies ever made. Can't think of any other examples similar to this.

I'm sure the other direction would occur frequently if I actually revisited many of the movies I loved as a child. Only one that comes to mind is Pocahontas - rewatched it as an adult and didn't like it at all.

Rise of the Tomb Raider (PC)

Was slowly playing through this as a way to chill after work. I find collectathon games pretty satisfying (100% collected) and the combat/gameplay felt good. Plot was a big whatever - I wasn't really there for the plot anyway. Will eventually move onto the third in the series.

When Marnie Was There

8/10

  • I'm such a sucker for a well-animated film set in a rural environment. Nice and relaxing.
  • Best moments for me were any of the boat-rides with that silent guy + the last 10 minutes in general.
  • I was convinced starting about 30 minutes in that Marnie was Anna's dead/absent mother. Close enough.
  • I get that Anna was feeling pressured and stressed, but her "fat pig" reaction didn't feel right to me.

Finally got around to Lost in Translation

5/10

This didn't work for me at all - I didn't hate it, but I certainly didn't like it. I couldn't bring myself to really care for either character & all the other side-characters didn't come across to me as believably human. Ended up feeling bored around the halfway point, but still wanted to see where their relationship ended up out of pure curiosity.

Fargo

9/10 oh jeez

Third favorite Coen brothers film! Actually bumped my rating of this by 1-point from the last time I watched it. Dunno if it's because I'm riding high off of just seeing the TV show for the first time or what. But I've really grown to love the general atmosphere of a deep-winter Minnesota.

It's frankly just entertaining to watch criminals suck at being criminals while a competent law enforcer hunts them down. The script also seems to me like the Platonic ideal of a Coen brothers' script. Fairly tight story, except for the odd Yanagita scenes that always seemed out of place to me.

Soundtrack slaps btw.

I have no firsthand experience with this, but I think a USB 3 portable SSD should be on-par with SATA internal SSDs. You shouldn't be bottled-necked by the USB 3 transfer speed, since that's like 625 MB/s compared to the R/W of a non-NVMe SSD, which is like 550/500.

Yeah, it'll be slower than having an NVMe internal, but that's whatever.

EDIT: You don't really need to go USB-C imho. Many USB-C portables will still be using 625 MB/s transfer speeds. Even if you do find one that does the max of 1250 MB/s, there's no guarantee that your MOBO actually supports that speed and you would basically need an NVMe-based SSD in the portable to make it worthwhile. Sounds like overkill.

"Gold standard" for gaming mouse is going to be something newer by Logitech or Razer. I tend to buy Razer mice that use optical switches (as opposed to mechanical) because there's anecdotal evidence that they are less prone to failure and/or accidental double-clicks.

I personally use a Razer Basilisk Ultimate. Very comfortable, decent battery life, but pricey.

I think it's hilarious that the actuarial field has somehow been labelled as low-stress. I think something like 10% of candidates who sit for Exams P/FM end up completing all of them. Most of that drop-off is probably people asking themselves "why would I continue subjecting myself to this?"

Insurance industry in general was hit fairly hard by 2020. I work in Property/Casualty, so I'm a bit disconnected from the goings-on in Health, but I think Health was amusingly one of the less-affected sectors. There was a whole lot of deferred elective medical procedures. I mean hey, look at CVS stock, already an almost complete recovery from the initial COVID-scare drop despite controlling Aetna. COVID didn't hit them as hard as was initially anticipated.

Yep! Totally agree with everything said here. I'm an 8-lover myself, but it's hard to deny that it kinda makes 7 less-watchable. And 9 did the same thing to 8.

Still bizarre to me that they didn't have a planned trilogy-spanning story from the start.

Thoroughbreds

7/10

This was a rewatch for me -- caught it in theaters back whenever it first released. Four big positives from me about this movie.

1) Love the premise! Found it pretty unique and wasn't really sure where it was going during my first watch. Sidenote: I was lowkey expecting the step-father to wander down the stairs at the end instead of Anya.

2) Olivia and Anya were great. Made me miss Anton though. People should check out Green Room.

3) The soundtrack slaps. At points it reminded me a lot of Punch-Drunk Love, which I watched a few months ago so it's still fairly fresh. Also that Tanya Tagaq song rules.

4) Always appreciate a tight 90 minute runtime.

Okay, yeah that message was probably written by someone who is misunderstanding days to cover.

If you look at the 1/15/2021 line you can see that the volume of shares sold short was 44,670,000. The average daily trading volume at the time was probably around 74.5M. So it would take an average of 0.6 days to cover the short positions.

There are no specified end dates to short stock positions. Not really sure what that message is talking about.

From my understanding, there are two major reasons that more pressure is put on short positions to close-out as the stock price rises: 1) the short-seller has to pay interest based on the current stock price; 2) the higher the stock price, the more collateral is required from the short-seller to not get automatically margin called.
