Some of the old Falcom games like Ys might fit the bill. I've never played a single one, but I think Ys is still about the same dude since the 80s.

Me neither. It's not like anything happened in the last couple years that slowed/halted development on most major games resulting in significant delays or anything like that.

I mean even if you assume they did literally nothing in the past year due to COVID, it's still a pretty long time considering how much assets they are reusing.

The fact that we haven't gotten BotW2's subtitle makes me worried whether it'll even come out in 2022. By tradition, we've always gotten the subtitle at the E3 in the year prior to release. Eg TP was E3 2005, SS was E3 2010, BotW was E3 2016. And there's generally some live gameplay/treehouse demo by then too whereas BotW2 looks like it's still in the middle of development right now.

I'm suspecting we'll get BotW2's subtitle E3 2022 with a full treehouse demo and it'll release spring/fall 2023 although I have no idea why the game is taking this long.

Certainly I imagine USO would have a leg up in the US and RG would have a leg up in Europe and I know historically in the 60s and 70s, some players would skip RG. But internationally today, I feel like I hear more about RG more. I think USO's biggest problem is that it just feels really generic without its own identity, especially after AO also turned to hard court. And there's no famous player that's the "king of USO" like how Nadal's the "king of RG".

But anyways, the gap's closed a lot between all the grand slams in public perception, especially internationally. Even the AO can draw record ratings if the right people are playing.

Do you guys regard the four majors as equally important to legacy? Growing up, I'd understood the general sentiment that Wimbledon was the most prestigious, with the US/French in the 2 and 3 spot, and the Aussie in a somewhat distant fourth.

So would a Wimbledon title mean more than an Aussie, or is that just antiquated thinking?

Wimbledon > RG > USO > AO is probably true for public perception, but since the late 90s, players have treated them effectively as the same status. Until sometime in the 80s or 90s, AO offered less money and less rankings points than the other 3 grand slams, so top players like McEnroe would choose to skip it and treated AO as a lesser event.

But since the 90s when all 4 majors began to offer the same amount of points and similar amounts of money, the norm is that pretty much all uninjured players would try to quality and play their absolute hardest at all 4. That's why all 4 slam titles are treated more or less equally today. The one exception is players taking it easy for practical reasons related to surface. Eg someone like Federer withdrew from RG this year because he knows he has no shot on clay and would take the time to practice more on grass since he has a much better chance at Wimbledon.

How far ahead are those 3 from Pete Sampras, anyway?

It's hard to say. Sampras has 14 grand slams and is missing a French Open (he never even made finals), whereas the big 3 all have at least 19 grand slams and at least one career grand slam and of course, were playing against each other for most of their career. For most people, that's enough to consider the big 3 above Sampras, but you do sometimes see claims that Sampras is the GOAT mostly using era vs era logic like 90s serve and volley were tougher or something.

At least with regards to the big 3 specifically, you can probably make the best case for Sampras > Nadal. The argument would go that Nadal's only better at clay while Sampras is better on hard court and especially grass. Sampras also has more weeks at #1 than Nadal and has won the ATP Finals 5 times, while Nadal has won 0. It's much harder to argue Sampras > Djokovic/Federer without resorting to some era argument since they trump him in almost every category.

Not a tennis guy here but this argument is super interesting because it's the only sport I am aware of where all of the arguments for the GOATs are current players. Looking at hockey, basketball, baseball, boxing, etc. and things always devolve into an eras debate. But no one here is talking about Pete Sampras or whatever.

Yeah, we're definitely in a golden age for men's tennis and it's been interesting following the sport since 2004. Considering how much sports medicine has improved and athletes are playing longer than before, it wouldn't surprise me if someone emerges 5+ years from now and gets 30+ grand slams. In which case, we'll definitely get a lot of era debates (is it more impressive to get 20 grand slams against the other big 3 or 30 grand slams against "inferior competition" etc).

I think Peak vs. Longevity is a legitimate argument, although not many people want to argue in favor of peak because we tend to favor championships a lot. Who at their best was the best is a more interesting argument than who won the most Slams.

Even if we go by peak, 2011 Djokovic has a very good argument there too.

Emeraldegg posted...
For me it's federer because he managed his #1 ranking # of weeks record while dealing with a prime Nadal.

Federer started his #1 run in early 2004, when Nadal was only 18 and still a rookie. While you can say he hit his prime on clay by 2005, he was still very rough on other courts. Nadal didn't even make past the 4th round of a non-French Open grand slam until US Open 2006 so imo 2007 (or maaaybe 2006) is the earliest you can really call him prime Nadal.

Easily. I'm not even sure what arguments you can make for Federer/Nadal being the GOAT unless you think that the one extra grand slam (plus an olympic gold in Nadal's case) beats almost everything else favoring Djokovic like his record weeks at #1, double career grand slams, defending all slams, double career golden masters, wining H2H against both Fed/Nadal, etc.

And Djokovic will probably win at least 1 of the Wimbledon/US Open/AUS Open within the next year to take even that argument away. In which case the only thing left is some age bs argument to try to discount Djokovic's later titles.

It's just weird to see someone say, "It's clearly [this game] which had a remake released five years later" when that was already beat.

Fire Emblem? The Harvest Moon example I gave earlier (assuming it counts) was already shorter and I'm pretty sure there's stuff even shorter than that.

A lot of it depends on what you call a remake. I feel like there's an entire category of remakes that people are overlooking, which is a "demake" where a game on home console got remade from the ground up as a technologically inferior game on handheld.

Off the top of my head, Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town (Apr 2003) is a full GBA remake of Harvest Moon: Back to Nature (Dec 1999) for PS1, so that's about 3 years and 4 months.

There's also stuff like Street Fighter 2, which got a version on Game Boy and Tiger Electronics a couple years later and I don't even know if it even would count as a remake.

This poll is embarrassing, and it really shows the lazy gamer stereotype where they cant and wont relate to anything requiring hard work to succeed.

GameFAQs is certainly more sports-apathetic than average, but declining interest in sports is an overall trend. The growth of alternative forms of entertainment (streaming, video games, social media, internet in general, etc) over the past 20 years, all the safety and political controversies and the pandemic have dampened a lot of enthusiasm for sports.

minimal romance (like no drama over love. but the main character can have someone he loves as a background)

As others have suggested, Agatha Christie's novels are all great, although keep in mind she's also a romance writer and some of her mystery novels like Murder on the Links feels like a romance novel at times. Also Death on the Nile kinda.

Can anyone answer me as to why GameFreak/The Pokemon Company seem to be incapable of making beautiful games now?

Like, I'm not even asking for them to have something as gorgeous as Breath of the Wild, but with the same exact hardware they could be at least 75% of the way there. Where we're at is basically not even at 25%.

BotW was the Switch's only real launch title after the disastrous Wii U, meaning BotW had Nintendo's entire future riding on its shoulders. If BotW bombed, the Switch would have lost a ton of early momentum and potentially have sold way worse long term. Under this much pressure, Nintendo used the entire might of the company to ensure it's as good as possible (like gutting the majority of Monolith to work on BotW, leaving only a skeleton crew to make Xenoblade 2).

Pokemon just doesn't have this pressure. Not to mention, because Pokemon fans are going to buy the games no matter what, GameFreak actually makes more money releasing a subpar product since it'll have a lower development cost. Pokemon Sword/Shield cut a lot of features fans wanted and still sold 20+ million. If GameFreak added all the features fans wanted, it would likely have increased development cost by a good amount, while not resulting in much higher sales.

I think it's like the Sonic principle. The Sonic games started turning into trash after the Sega consoles died and Sonic lost the pressure to carry an entire system on its back.
