I've noticed in the past that SFF/blowouts seem more extreme whenever other sites have character/game contests. Not sure what the difference is here. Do we just take these things more seriously?

I think that Mario isn't SFFing people, he's just LAW but even scarier on this site. And I think the reason for that is not just that casuals know Mario, but it's because most people are likely to agree that in a poll to determine the "best video game character ever", they're going to take that at face value and generally vote for the character that actually deserves that title. Somewhere like GameFAQs, where we're more into our own niches and we'll have fanboy arguments over petty shit, the effect of that is dulled and someone like Tails can still pull 25% on Mario or whatever, but on this site, very few people are going to be standing in the way of regarding Mario as the GOAT.
