Some Genshin meme. Genshin's is the most talked about game on Twitter and it also has the most active gaming subreddit, so they could easily take over our contest if they cared to.

A video game can have hours of tracks but the most iconic are generally in the same parts of the game. For most games, it's the title screen/menu/"theme" of the game (eg Halo theme) or especially in the case of platformers, the first area/hub (eg World 1-1, Green Hill Zone, etc). Especially for RPGs and action adventures, you have battle/boss music (eg One Winged Angel) or emotional/character theme (eg Zelda's lullaby). For some games, you also have the credits (eg Still Alive).

What are some iconic themes from fairly random parts of a game? Not counting sound effects like a 1-Up sound. Some of the top of my head:

Song of Storms - OoT
One of the most iconic Zelda themes is from a random windmill in Kakariko. Yeah, it's still somewhat remembered today for the time paradox but it serves very little plot purpose beyond only being needed to drain the well and you spend a total of maybe 5 minutes in the place. Also, Gerudo Valley from OoT fits too.

Coconut Mall - Mario Kart Wii
Second course of the Flower cup and thanks to memes, definitely the most recognizable Mario Kart song.

Gourmet Race - Kirby Super Stars
One of the less popular minigames in Kirby Super Stars. At this point, the track's more popular because of Smash than its original game.

Lavender Town - RBY
One of the most iconic Pokemon themes thanks to Creepypastas. I wouldn't say Lavender Town is random and forgettable per se, but it's not a beginning area, ending area nor is it particularly climactic.

Gusty Garden Galaxy - SMG
I haven't played SMG, but I was surprised to hear it's not the first area like with World 1-1 or Bob-omb Battlefield.

All of Super Mario Bros 1?
There's only a few real tracks in the first Mario game, so I'm not sure if this even counts.

I think it's the opposite. BotW2 has priority over XBC3, so BotW2 would have a bigger impact on XBC3's development than the other way around. The majority of XBC2's dev team got drafted to work on BotW so Monolith ended up having to outsource large parts of the game because their own artists and programmers kept disappearing when Aonuma called. Was a miracle XBC2 actually came out on time.

Now that BotW2 is basically confirmed to not show up for Nintendo's notE3, it's time to ask what the heck is going on with the game. There's been more time between now and BotW than there has been between SS and BotW and we still don't even have a title for BotW2. Assuming an optimistic March 2023 release would still put a 6 year gap for a game that started off as BotW DLC and whose trailer so far has shown a largely remixed BotW Hyrule.

So what's going on? COVID? Development hell? Extreme ambition that hasn't been revealed? Nintendo holding it back as a launch title for Switch 2?

Nintendo's slate for the rest of 2022 is already full, so they don't have much to announce.

Yeah, but it'll definitely alienate anyone who didn't grow up under ASCII guides and scare away young people from the site. I just searched "Elden Ring Godskin Duo" on Google as a test and I get a ton of detailed guides with pictures + videos from Polygon, vg247, IGN and a bunch of random sites. GameFAQs doesn't appear at all and I had to manually go to the Elden Ring page on GameFAQs to find the one walkthrough for it and it's all text.

on a more serious note, GameFAQs/SBAllen have failed horribly. How do you let this site get so old? why aren't we adding new users? there are more gamers now than ever, yet the 13-25 age group doesn't even know this website exist. They're all on reddit and Twitch !

GameFAQs missed the boat on transitioning to the social media era and it's too late now. I think the main issue is that GameFAQs only operates as a host of other people's content, which means they have little control over how people write their walkthroughs. This means inconsistent levels of quality (there are still walkthroughs using ASCII in 2022) and lots of gaps in content. I tried to find a walkthrough for Halo Infinite a while ago and found out we had none. Like... I get Halo's not what it used to be, but not having any guide at all for a mainline Halo is pretty bad.

Also, forums are dying as a whole and GameFAQs is conservative even by forum standards. Gen Z communicates in pictures, videos, memes and emojis. GameFAQs forums are still almost entirely text based. And even if we do start appealing to Gen Z, how many of them would want to join a community of 30-40 year olds that know each other for decades?

Alone is probably my favorite, followed by Someone Else's Man.

In general, I feel like Heaven has always been the most popular.

I included the releases because I think it's telling that Twilight Princess stayed the same while Skyward Sword dropped, despite SS's rerelease supposedly adding a lot of needed quality of life improvements. In fact, let's add in some more rerelease comparisons:

Conversely, you can argue that 4.09 is still quite high despite a decade of nonstop bashing and is still a good deal higher than the likes of FFXV and FFXIII. FFVIIR on the PS4 is only 4.16. And a fall of 0.13 is hardly that much. For example,

Xenoblade's remaster got an even bigger fall, despite being in a similar situation.

Oh I was talking about FFXVI, which shares their team and is not an MMO.

FFXIII and FFXV were definitely a big mess, but from the way FFXIV fans talks about their game like it's the second coming, I feel like there's reason to be finally be optimistic about FF again. Plausibly around Witcher 3 level in strength if the team really delivers.

We know too little about BotW2 to comment, but there are potential issues of concern like heavy map and enemy reuse, etc.

Meanwhile I'm just excited we finally get a mainline FF and a mainline Zelda in the same year again. How likely is it for FFXVI to be stronger than BotW2?

It's not as common for games Awakening and later, in part because the large influx of new fans, but I still sometimes see it used when discussing or comparing the series as a whole. On FE forums of course. Not many people on general gaming/Switch site would even know any of the numberings.

It's not like most of them are direct sequels, or even necessarily meant to take place in the same world.

I meant perceived release order, not perceived chronological order, and I used "perceived" because it's not official and often controversial. Whether the remakes count, whether BS Fire Emblem should conunt, etc can give you a different numbering scheme but eg FE8 is understood to be Sacred Stones by nothing more than sheer fan tradition.

Yeah Ace Attorney, Star Ocean, Breath of Fire (for 5) and Yakuza (for 7+) definitely belong in the official Japanese numbering category.

I've never played Trails but I felt like if any other JRPG would use unofficial fan numbering, that would be it, but apparently even Trails doesn't use it.

For example, in Fire Emblem, the Sacred Stones is commonly referred to as FE8, even though that's not an official title. Rather, FE8 is a fan given name because the game's perceived as the 8th game in the series (although ironically, the fan numbering is different from the "official" ordering). But if you start talking about Zelda6, nobody knows what you are talking about, even though by the same metric it should be Majora's Mask.

What other game series with at least multiple unnumbered entries have these sort of commonly accepted unofficial fan numberings? Star Ocean is the first that comes to mind, although it is officially numbered in the Japanese version.

The funny thing is that P1 was the best selling Persona game in Japan until P5 finally surpassed it.

P3's dungeon is like if P5 only had Mementos, but 200+ floors high. This was before the series blew up and could afford bigger budgets.

It's actually wild to see how far Persona has come as a franchise. At release, P3 was a niche game only hardcore JRPG fans have even heard of but now? People are seriously speculating whether Xbox is paying for console exclusivity of a port 3 generations later..

Maybe they're planning something more ambitious for it later, but I feel like the resources necessary to do so if they're just keeping it all in the same engine spitting out at 1080 wouldn't be that significant.

Unless they lost some source code or something...

It would be a ton of work though, like redoing all the cutscenes to incorporate FeMC, just to recreate something that's from the PS2 era. Would make more sense for Atlus to remake P3 from scratch, which we could eventually see.

The IGN Expo just now was way worse. Most PC Game Shows and Future Game Shows I just leave on the background since it's all forgettable indie games that couldn't make it into any of the bigger directs.

And did we forget E3 2021 already? Most were terrible outside Nintendo and Xbox. Gearbox, Take Two, Capcom and some others I'm forgetting basically had nothing.

Geoff's never had the ability to secure the Japanese games the board cares about outside Bamco and Kojima, so idk what people expected here. Most of the those stuff go to Sony/Nintendo since they have contractual agreements and exclusivity deals.

And the majority of the relatively small number of Western AAA games the board cares about belong to Sony/MS who'd save them for their own directs. Getting TLOU was already a big grab since Sony could have easily shown it off at their own state of play.

A TLoU1 remake makes a lot of sense to me with an HBO series imminent and the game being so beloved so existing fans will rebuy it. And it's technically the second PS3 game Sony's remade for PS5, so the precedent's there.

I thought the low total was due to the poll either starting late due to a glitch or extended website downtime, but the poll graphs showed neither one of those was the cause of the low total. I guess the site isn't as hyped for this new "E3 replacement", or that a lot of the site didn't know about this E3 replacement show yet.

The options are weak this year. No Nintendo/Sony/Squenix/Capcom/etc.

I think the bigger issue with DQXI is that the game took me 90 hours and there's like 10 songs. Okay that's an exaggeration but you definitely hear the same songs again and again and again and it's more noticeable than other JRPGs for some reason.

Yeah and half of those songs were recycled from previous games. It's mostly him being old, though he's been phoning it in for some time now. I daresay he spent a week max on DQXI's OST.

And yeah I know people rave about the music but nothing I've heard has grabbed me, especially the main theme. TBF the only DQ I've actually played is a demo of XI, and I know even fans think the music there is meh, so maybe that one's unfair.

Sugiyama was like 85 by DQXI and he's a hardcore conservative boomer that refused to put orchestral music in the Western release.

DQ's music great overall because Sugiyama has an unique style that matches well with Toriyama's art and the general aesthetic of the game. You can generally instantly tell what track is Sugiyama's unlike most JRPG OSTs that all have similar Jpop/prog rock feel to them.

They need to delay this game by another 2 years

Pokemon's sort of in its own category and an isolated case in terms of success.

Leaving turn based behind is just a pure business decision. Witcher 3 sold 40 million. BotW is closing in on 30 million. Skyrim did 30 million in 2016 and probably way higher now. Turn based games don't sell anywhere close to this.

I imagine the elevator pitch for XVI is basically let's make Witcher 3 with DMC combat and give it a FF skin to keep existing fans happy.
