Initial assumption is that Sony was able to acquire it for peanuts *because* of that damaging news, and that they assume a good ol' corporate sterilization will eventually wash away EVO's old rep.

Even if they do cure it of its rep, it's gonna be dead anyway. Sony's only gonna allow games that are on the latest Playstation because that's literally how they always roll.

I mean they have the SF market cornered, probably going to exclusively fund SF6 and use that to headline EVO

esports have left the fighting game genre behind, I don't know why they are getting into EVO now of all times when they could have saved the entire genre if they bought EVO in the early 2010s when fighting games were worth something

Hopefully this means Sony is going to help fund MVC4 because Street Fighter 6 alone can't carry EVO.

I think they'll stick with the genre (I do think they'll invite Nintendo to keep Smash in - no clue if Nintendo will do so) while doing everything they can to scrub away the original fighting game culture - something EVO has already been doing for years.

Video games in general keep getting bigger and bigger, so I think there's still plenty of room for the fighting game genre.

There's literally no way Sony invites Nintendo to keep Smash in. Sony has always been the last of the three to be willing to work with the other two. Look how long it took Sony to allow cross platform play, when Nintendo and Microsoft had it long before.

Hell, for the longest time you couldn't even play games like Fortnite on Playstation if the account had been used on a Nintendo or Microsoft system first. You had to allow Sony to wipe the account and make it Playstation only.

That Nintendo statement does suggest that the ball is in their court (which could be an inaccurate assumption since all this info is brand new) rather than them getting immediately dumped by Sony.

I'll remain skeptical until we get more information. Sony always puts out these good will statements but then it never actually works that way. With the Fortnite account example, they were like "Yes your existing account works on Playstation hooray!" but then what they didn't tell people is that as soon as you used said account on Playstation, it locked it to only being useable on Playstation.

I'd be happy to be wrong, though.

I would imagine they will try and turn EVO into a more general gaming tournament over a few years period so they can push their own products more

Joey Cuellar was a co-owner of the company so they couldn't just remove him without buying him out. They needed money for that, plus they probably lost a ton of money last year when they had to pull out of their contract with Mandalay Bay for the physical event, then probably lost money on contracts when they had to cancel the digital event. They probably also had a contract already signed for this year with Mandalay Bay, which is likely also not happening physically. They were probably hurting for cash

That's just corporate-speak for "we are business competitors but not enemies." They said they're going to consider Evo like every other tournament. They're not prepared to make a definitive yes or no until they have some numbers to work with.
