Otacon you can at least partially chalk up to Stockholm syndrome in MGS1 and all his otherwise qualifying behavior in MGS4 happens after getting some and then getting attached.

Kazuichi is still a very good answer but at least he isn't being strung along or blinding himself to very serious red flags all over the place.

Parappa the Rapper. He spends two entire games trying to improve himself so that Sunny Funny will notice him. In the first one, she's interested in someone else, and in the second she calls him a baby. That's even before addressing the species difference between them.

Persona seems to have a lot of these, now that I think about it. Kenji in Persona 3. In Persona 4, Yosuke and Teddie (who's not as bad as Morgana, to be fair), and low key Adachi qualifies, I think.
