This. I'm not sure if the higher ups at Youtube are trolling, or really don't know what they're doing at all. But they're apparently still making money, so .

Oh they know what they're doing. They just stopped caring about making a good product and instead focused all of their attention on making a product that peddles advertisement revenue for their shareholders.

Google doesn't want you to search for things you want to find anymore, it wants you to be served content it thinks you will spend money on.

See what used to happen is you would look up a thing and youtube would find for you as many videos as it could specificallly related to that specific thing, specifically. So you could type in "blue teddy bears in a swimming pool dancing" and you'd find as many videos of blue teddy bears in a swimming pool dancing as youtube could find. Lots of homegrown content to really make sure you could find the video you were looking for. Maybe different angles, different iterations, different uploads. Just lots of things of the thing you wanted.

At some point youtube decided this was terrible and bad and not what we all wanted, so now we have this new kind of search. You look up "blue teddy bears in a swimming pool dancing" and your results are 2 videos related to your search (as long as they are less than a week old), some ads about where you can buy teddy bears (and also Huel), a katy perry video featuring some bunny rabbits (not blue ones) and a bunch of completely unrelated results of things that you looked at yesterday. If there were any user-shot videos of the clip you wanted then I'm sorry, but fuck you. If it wasn't uploaded by Teddy Bears Inc you won't get it.

This is SO great, I love this. Thank you youtube.

Witcher 3 did it right. Crafting involved doing special quests to learn special armor blueprints, and the cost to upgrade these was significant. They also looked great. Most importantly though, the ingredients were intuitive to understand. Break down an iron piece of junk to make iron ingots. Turn that into an iron sword. Etc. Pity that game made collectable loot so pointless

I hate when crafting is impossible to understand because all the ingredients are complete nonsense. Basically every JPRG.

I also hate when the modifiers it gives you are boring and almost not even worth the effort to craft it. Like +3% critical damage. Also every jrpg.

Huge time saver as well. The difference between 90 second rests and 3 minute rests may be 20 minutes saved every workout.

I believe it's confirmation bias at play. Let me explain.

People don't have limitless mental capacity. When we make judgment, it's mentally tiring to evaluate every single thing every single time. So we set up some short of mental shortcut to help us evaluate things. But this shortcut by nature is prone to error & bias. We call this cognitive bias. For example, the mentioned Dunning-Kruger effect is a type of cognitive bias where we overestimate our own abilities.

Confirmation bias is a type of cognitive bias where we favor information that reinforces our belief. Because of this the exact same story can be interpreted differently by people.

A = We need <$1,000 for gaming rig (cheap club)
B = We need >$3,000 for gaming rig (expensive club)

B says "I have $4,000 gaming rig. I can play game X at 4K / Ultra / 120fps"
1. B (expensive club) mentally focus on 'game X at 4K / Ultra / 120fps'. From B's point of view that $4,000 rig is perfect.
2. On the other hand A (cheap club) mentally focus on '$4,000 to play game X' instead. They know they can play X on cheaper rig. From A's point of view that $4,000 rig is a waste of money.
As you can use, the exact same story about B's gaming rig can be perceived differently by B and A because they favor different piece of information (that aligns with their initial belief). That leads to...

Good post. It does seem like a sort of confirmation bias.

I've spent a stupid amount of time looking at this topic and here's your answer:

Time you rest is completely arbitrary. You should rest for however long you need to recover between sets. This will depend on the exercise and the goal. Smaller muscles for hypertrophy movements require less rest. Bigger muscles and compound lifts and particular for strength - more rest.

If you're doing some lateral raises or wrist curls or something, you may only need 30 seconds of rest.

If you are doing squats, you'll need a few minutes.

If your primary goal is maximal strength, e.g. you're a powerlifter and you're doing squats, you may need upwards of 6 to 10 minutes between sets.

In summary, go again when you are ready to complete the work you've set out. If you feel completely prepared to hit those 10 lat pulldowns again and you're just randomly waiting for the timer to hit 0, maybe just go already.

A caveat I will say is that keeping your rests consistent gives you a better idea of your current conditioning. If you are setting out 2 minutes to rest between each set of squats but every time the timer runs out you are still out of breath, you know your conditioning sucks and you need to work on that.

pinky0926

Love: classical music
Hate: the world of classical music, audiences, critics, the format, the pomposity, the seriousness with which people take it, the obsession with everything having to be perfect.

This article on a "controversy" really sums it up for me:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Philharmonic_concert_of_April_6,_1962

Basically what happened is that a slightly eccentric painist (glenn gould) decided to play a piece of music unconventionally. He deviated from the score, took liberties with the notes and played it in a way that was unorthodox in tempo/phrasing/colour etc.

This was such a HUGE controversy that it became a legendary moment in classical music history. The conductor deliberately distanced himself in a speech before the performance. The audience booed during the performance. People walked out. Critics panned the pianist in every press article. It's still being examined to this day in historical review.

Just a reminder, no one died. There wasn't a fire. He didn't pull a GG Allin and eat feces on stage. He didn't punch an audience member. Literally the only thing that happened is he...played a piece a little unusually.

This is everything I hate about classical music. There's such an elaborate level of purity around it all. And don't get me started on how serious people are about having absolute silence at all times during a performance and between movements. That is a relatively modern invention and I've never understood it.

* Rambo: Hate? I'd die for it.
* Trautman: Then what is it you want?
* Rambo: I want, what they want, and every other guy who came over here and spilled his guts and gave everything he had, wants! For our country to love us as much as we love it! That's what I want!
* Trautman: How will you live, John?
* Rambo: Day by day.
It's almost like he still has PTSD and knows the country doesn't give a shit. He doesn't even go back to the US until the end of the fourth movie because of it.

This is all surface level platitude. Yeah, noble soldier says noble stuff. "I hates war, war is hell. Now let's go kill some guys". The actual substance of the movies (excluding first blood) are about how fucking badass stallone is and how impossible he is to kill and how many bad guys he can kill in one movie, that's what rambo is.

People don't watch rambo 2 to get a sense of the horrors of war. They watch it to see Stallone be a human machine gun.

"How sweet and honourable it is to die for one's country"

I rewatched Band of Brothers not long ago. Pretty much a perfect series. And then I watched some clips on youtube of some of the best parts.

Ever since then, I've been getting served a lot of "hero" content on youtube, and it strikes me how much people are desperate to show being a soldier as a really noble and heroic profession.

I understand in the context of WW2 that it was a necessity and people were just doing what they had to do. But this attitude extends to basically every military conflict since then. Like it's a very simple "you're a good guy, you're going to fight the bad guys, the mission is to protect freedom" message, every time. But that's not most wars or most battles.

Military recruitment ads are the creepiest thing I've ever seen. They literally mimmick hollywood movies and make joining the military seem like this epic CoD campaign where you're just off to kill bad guys and do cool shit.

Even Rambo, a movie that was originally just about how much war can fuck a person up mentally, ended up bastardising the character in every subsequent movie as the perfect noble unkillable soldier.

The older I get the more cynical I become of stuff like this. It's like there's a giant machine and its entire purpose is to make war seem like a good idea.
