I was one of those nerds. I associated call of duty with frat bros and filthy casuals and basically hated the games by association

Call of Duty didnt get better, it just made everything else as bad as it.

Didn't really hate the games as I did play Black Ops and had a blast playing with friends. What I did hate was the effect its popularity had on other games to the point even radically different genres were trying to drawn in the CoD crowd.
It's at least partially responsible for the move away from "Let's make a good game" to "What would get the most sales".

I thought it was a decent series for what it was meant to be, though I could see why people disliked it.

Not everyone wanted to play a more grounded infantry type dude in a game with controlled success parameters, cover mechanics and some occasionally overbearing level structuring. It wasn't fast paced or free roaming like DOOM or Quake.

I still don't care for it, especially since it's basically just propaganda for the military-industrial complex and it frequently feeds into GOP narratives in the process.

I don't necessarily hate it but I think they are a blight on the industry. At least the older Call of Duty games kind of maybe sort of were a bit based in some semblance of reality. Now we have fucking Nikki Minaj and Youtubers smoking doobies over downed players to execute them. Remember when it was like about war? And not a monetization machine?

I liked Call of Duty 1, 2, 4 and Black Ops 1. The rest have been okay to awful (Black Ops Cold War, blargh)

I continue to play Call of Duty because it's the only series on the market that has the FPS gameplay that I enjoy. I want fast-paced and arcade-y gameplay, so something slow and tactical like Rainbow Six Siege doesn't suit me. I want small maps and a focus on the gunplay without extra stuff like vehicles or environmental destruction, so Battlefield doesn't suit me. I want a mostly boots-on-the-ground experience, so Halo and Titanfall don't suit me. I want a game where you can always play how you want and aren't forced into a certain role by your team's character choices, so a hero shooter like Overwatch doesn't suit me.

Until the day Ubisoft finally launches XDefiant and I try that out (and trust me, I'm hyped for it) there's simply nothing else out there that fills the same niche that Call of Duty does. So that's a big reason why I continue to play it even as the newer games aren't as good as the old ones.

Nerds actually liked CoD for a while when it still wasnt as big. I remember the series getting nothing but praise around the CoD2/CoD4 era. I think it was around when the original MW2 came out that it started getting a little more hated on, then it just built from there.

COD has been mostly shit for at least that long

I don't care for first person shooters. So my only hate for CoD is that it was so successful that fps games became the big thing that every studio was pumping out.
