I dont know what this is.

That $250k thing? Maybe savings are more useful for rich people.

Or if the stock market craters.

Not saying it is likely but they exist for a purpose. To protect your money and maybe earn some interest on the side. That is all. As noted, rates used to be better but they are still the place to park money you need on hand regardless of time or stock market situation.

Hence, their point.

I tried to learn in high school, but I live where there's tons of hills. Stop signs and stoplights at the top of grades.

I could get the thing around just fine, but I was bad at coming off stops, and worst coming off stops at the top of hills. It seemed needlessly stressful so I stopped trying.

I wish I had the skill now. There are vehicles I want that are manual only. But I can't drive them

I should note, I have a 2018 WRX Limited with the CVT . I want to get a STI when the new designs roll out. But I need to learn to drive a manual before then.

TopicAre Halflings/Hobbits considered elves or humans?
furb
07/14/20 2:09:56 PM

I thought Hobbits in Tolkien were a branch of humans. They moved from the ancestral lands of humans in the East to the West at some undisclosed time. They are a splinter sub-group of humans, and they have the gift of men. I just want to edit this. I was working from memory. I guess it's not definitive but heavily implied.

http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Hobbits#Origin

Hobbits were considered Men. Nearly all scholars agree that Men were closely related to Hobbits, far more closely than Men were to either Elves or Dwarves. It was thus commonly assumed that Hobbits were among the Younger Children of Ilvatar and were the result of the same act of creation as Men. This would imply that Hobbits had the Gift of Men to pass entirely beyond Arda.
It is supposed that Hobbits branched out from Men as a race in the Elder Days.[12] Their exact origin is unknown but in their early days they could have been primitive and "savage"[3] but they come into the records not earlier than the early Third Age where they were living in the Vales of Anduin in Wilderland, between Mirkwood and the Misty Mountains. They have lost the genealogical details of how they are related to the rest of mankind. While they stayed there, the Northmen knew them. Their descendants, the Rohirrim, had that memory of the holbytlan and they remained an object of lore until they contacted them during the War of the Ring. Many old words and names in "Hobbitish" are cognates of words in Rohirric, so much so that even someone without linguistic training could make out the relation (Meriadoc Brandybuck would later write an entire book devoted to the relationship, Old Words and Names in the Shire).

Issue with Termantor I and II is he really doesn't have much by way of a character.

I still think he does the most with Conan the Barbarian. The script is light on talking, but the parts he does speak perfectly capture the vibe and character. He also emotes so well as Conan, brooding and defiant.

The Soviet Union collapsed in the blink of the eye, in terms of historical events. There was a mad dash after to secure weapons of mass destruction and military equipment by the world to stop such things from getting into the wrong hands. Things turned out surprisingly well, but just imagine a collapsed federal government in the US. It would be a international disaster considering all the high end military equipment, who possessed it, and what they planned to do with it.

Average Joe

One more. Mainly posting the books that helped me understand different forms of representation in democratic systems, and the whys and weaknesses of different approaches.

I highly recommend just reading the books, but still informative if not.

I think this one is most relevant to the issues OP raises. Lijhpart argues for consensual democratic systems and less on the models you see in the US and UK.

Like it or not, the framework of the US gov is a mix of democratic and indirect democratic features. The Federalist Papers makes this pretty obvious. The framers feared the vox populi and its ability to be influence by bad actors. Therefore, some systematic checks exist against purely democratic structures.

See the electoral college and the prior selection of senators through indirect elections. Also consider the US is a federation of states. It is not a unitary system at the foundational level. The senate on face is anti-democratic. But it exists as part of the Great Compromise which is inherently rooted in federalism and the rejection of the unitary state.

We can criticize the efficacy of these structures in modernity, but we have to address the whys of their existance.
