Their anatomy is quite different though and attests to different hunting strategies.

Wolves as you know, are canids. They have long legs, long muzzles and hunt in packs. Together they can take down large prey like bison. They can do this because they have large nostrils, so oxygen intake is immense and feeds their lungs as they chase down their prey in a marathon. Their muzzles enable them to grip and hold, with the entire pack eventually wearing down their quarry. Death for their prey is more often than not slow and agonizing.

Big cats, like tigers have relatively short legs, short muzzles and hunt alone. They stalk and ambush their prey, which are much fleeter of foot than they are. They do not have great stamina, their lungs are not as large and they have a smaller nasal cavity. They have shorter muzzles so they can bite into their prey's throat, and their prey cannot "shake" loose in a muzzle that is longer and has more space to maneuver around. Death for their prey is often much quicker (although some individual tigers are known to hamstring their prey and feed on their prey alive while it slowly bleeds to death).

The cheetah is the most doglike cat. It has long legs, large lungs and huge nostrils. However, they aren't truly dogs. They have more stamina than other cats but they must stalk to within a fairly short striking distance. They still do not have the endurance to run down prey over huge distances.

Two families of very successful predators. Two different ways of getting to the top.

Ask me anything.

The only true carnivorous bear is the polar bear. And their predatory success is mainly lie next to a hole in the ice, then use their immense strength to kill a seal as it pops up to breathe.

Brown and black bears can survive on vegetation.

A single Amur tiger is untouchable and has been known to cause a near total vacancy in the wolf population where they occur.

Yeah bears are complete beasts when threatened, but they aren't necessarily predators. They will eat a lot of fruits and berries, and are generally more opportunistic eaters like a raccoon is. That's why they invade a lot of tents and homes searching for anything that smells edible. They are omnivorous, so they will eat insects, and fish and sometimes small animals. Bears don't necessarily stalk and hunt prey though.

I think the "predator" thing is overblown since it doesn't really matter if they have the ability to attack, kill, and then eat you. Grizzly bear is the top carnivore (even though it is actually an omnivore) in North America.

Uh, yes it does? Predators actively hunt and kill their food. They're all carnivores but not all carnivores are predators (vultures for example).

Anything smaller than a mountain lion. So maybe a jaguarundi.
It is doubtful any dog can beat a wolf.
A wolf might be able to take down an impala. They're not very big anetelopes.

I just mean I figured that the kind of dogs that were supposed to guard livestock might be able to 'beat' a wolf though like I said I don't know the first thing about it. I assume it doesn't really come up irl because wolves are pack animals and dogs usually have people around or whatever

We were talking about individual dogs vs wolves. I think even if a dog outweighs a wolf, the wolf's wildness and survival skills outmatch the dog's.

In anatomy yes. Cheetah brothers also stick together for life and also hunt together.

As for lions, they still stalk and ambush. They don't chase their prey for long like wolves do.

What? Dude cats sneak up and ambush, dogs run after prey until the prey can't run anymore. The dogs are clearly the ones working harder and cats are arguably working smarter

Also cats have a low success rate because it's much harder hunting alone than with help, this is kinda obvious
