I was in high school from 1999 to 2003.

High school things. I had a lot of fun back then. I played multiple sports and was active with a lot of friends.

I played lots of vidya games and took part in multiple faction wars, rping, and general hijinxs on gamefaqs.

My parents never really perpetuated it, even though mom loves Christmas. Mom has always felt Santa is a great trasncendental concept about giving and kindness, but not much more.

I was three or four when they told me. I got a shoebox full of NES games or something. And it liked clicked that Santa did not make it, plus O remember asking why poor people did not get all the fancy things other kids got -- I had been facinated with the bell people, the Salvation Army. So I had that explained to me.

So I just outright asked if Santa was real, I was informed he was not, but was a symbol based off folk tales and a Saint.

I know all families are different as are kids, but I find it weird that some people perpetuate Santa on ther kids for so long.

Here's the things from my perspective. TLDR, Southern Pride is stupid and historically misplaced by many people that extol it as a virtue. You don't have to hate yourself or your history for the sins of your fathers, but don't hold them up on pedestals either for fighting for the wrong things.

My family came to the colonies in the 1660s. We had a plantation in modern day Delaware. My direct relative moved from the plantation to Western Virginia, now West Virginia. During the Civil War, our family lived in a massively Pro-Union county, not far from Wheeling. We owned a ton of property in the central part of the county though, which was remote. We aided and abetted the Confederates with both money, manpower, and helped smuggle supplies South. One of my great uncles served in the 46th Virginia Cavalry during the Valley Campaign.

This great-uncle was killed around 15 miles from his home, by the local home guard while returning on furlough. He was dumped in a shallow grave, but was later retrieved by his sister (who was married to the local prosecutor in the neighboring county where he was killed). So, he got buried in the cemetery where most of my family is located. We came out on the loosing side of the war, sold off most of our land, and became marginalized somewhat in local politics for over 100 years as a result.

I don't hate my progenitors, and some of my relatives did fight for the Union. But they were clearly wrong, especially by the Civil War, once it was largely apparent slavery was abhorrent. I can sort of respect them for fighting for what they believed in to a small degree, but it was still morally wrong and not worthy of pride.

***
Here's the irony for me. In the same town my relative got killed for being a Confederate soldier, people now fly Confederate flags and talk about "history" and "pride" and "cultural identity". It stuns me, because doing that back before it was "history" got people killed there. Even funnier is when some of these people weren't even in the US when this "history" was even happening.

most of these people never owned anything. they were just poor and sooo uneducated that they could be proud pawns in a war that they had little stake in.

I can understand protecting what's "yours." even if it's wrong. it's pretty cool that you can acknowledge that and move on with your life. but many of these people just want to be part of something that makes them feel special. even if it's a delusion of a past grandeur that their family never actually had.

it takes a special kind of stupid to be in America, but not evolve as a culture in 150 years. some of these people have been on a continuous loop of failure for generations.

I think that's true, basically.

I think another poster hit the nail on the head. There are things about the South that are worth building pride around, like the food, music, do-it-yourself mentality, and strong community bonds. This all exists independent of the Civil War and Jim Crow, so why do so many Southerners feel compelled to use a symbol of a bunch of traitors fighting for slavery to be the be-all end-all of Southern pride and identity?

Research and Methods 602
I did not do well in it, to say the least. Math was not my strong point, but I needed 12 hours of research and methods in grad school. This was my ninth hour course.

I learned some basic Microcase and SPSS in undergrad -- one of my research and method classes transferred into graduate school.

In my first grad level methods course, 601, I got a B. I worked my tail off in it! It just focused on learning OLS Regression and things like ANOVA and probabilities. We also learned about the basics of hypothesis testing.

602 as another beast. It was take what you learned in 601 and apply it to actual research, while learning how to use STATA. Only a handful of systems on campus had STATA and a private license was extremely expensive. STATA is like using a DOS prompt to do high end statistical analyses -- similar to SASS. For somebody like me, that struggled with the math side of the house to start with, adding on this extra layer of learn to code, pretty much broke me. The course only had 4 grades too. So, I was pretty much out of the game by grade 2.

Vomit

One weekend, I spent 20 hours working through what amounted to 15 math questions with the STATA line inputs along with it. I hated it. It was so over my head and skill set, I couldn't really even ask the professor the right questions for extra help (I tried -- the prof was pretty much a newly minted PHD and whiz and this sort of thing, which likely didn't help).

Facism can resemblea form of state socialism, with a mixing of public and private interests. The issue is who gets to be a member of the state. In the case of Nazism, there is an organic conception of the state, with membership limited to those of certain ethnic origins and psychological qualities.

Do note they were killing Marxists and Lenninist, which call for the destruction of traditional social structures, religion, and ethnic lines, to form a new soceity. This was anathema to facism that Nazism advanced. Socialism is also not the endgame of Marxism and Lenninism. It it a stage in the historical dialectic prior to communism.

Also note, the communists war against each other too, see Trotsky and such. Nazism can still have aspects of socialism and yet fight against other ideologies with socialistic tendencies.

Yeah, i was super into this girl last year. We dated for several months and were super close. I care about her a ton even now.

I broke up with her though. I didnt leave her f9r someone else or because I stopped having feelings for her.

But there were one or two big life things. She def wanted kids and did not want to move. I have always been on the fence about both. I thought I could make it work.

Then I realized I didnt have the heart to ask her to change and I was afraid I couldnt. We were getting really serious, so I ended it before things hit a point of no return without badly damaged feelings.

I was 33 and she was 27, so this was not playing around teen stuff. We just were not right for each other, even though I sometimes wish were still together.

I think it creates an ecosystem where games that would otherwise be normal games, with earned equipment, gear, and progression, are not or made. Instead, we games with mechanisms that reward gambling or deliberately long grinds/stamina systems.

I loved the Fire Emblem game. I would have paid 30 bucks for a full game with non-gambling mechanic and no stamina system. Instead, I played it for a week, and stopped. And because people spend huge amounts of money, me opting out of the system doesn't really do anything.

Personally, I don't care if people spend hordes of money; my rub is more how this impacts the overall gaming ecosystem.

It's one of my all time favorites. It was a slog downloading it episode by episode my freshmen year of college on DC++ and Ares. This was 2003, so it was still pretty new and not in print in the US yet.

i think it is extremely charming without being needlessly pandering. I usually hate slice of life stuff, but I found the pace of the show outstanding. Likely, due to its 4 panel origin.

I would love a Yotsuba anime too. It will never happen however.
