damn why was the doctor fighting it?

Part of it's paranoia over getting sued if the woman changes her mind later, but it's mostly just the attitude that all women should want kids and that anyone who says they won't will likely end up changing their mind later, so the doctor believes they're doing the woman a favour by refusing to do it. It's a very sexist, paternalistic way to practice medicine, but it's still very common.

Mr. Mike has previously acknowledged that Trump was guilty of the charges in question, but insisted that the fraud he committed didn't actually deserve to be punished because he paid back the loans he obtained fraudulently. This seems to be a common thread among Trump's fanbase (including the entire GOP, in the case of his impeachments): Not denying that he's broken the law, but not wanting him to face consequences for doing so because reasons.

The only time I've actually worked with a full beef tenderloin, I turned the middle ~2-3 lb into beef wellington (which was a lot of work and could have turned out better because it was my first time trying it, but was really good), got ~8 nice steaks out of it, and used the trimmings to make some phenomenal beef stir fry. A whole tenderloin is a lot of meat, though, so it's not something I have any desire to make a habit of getting.

I think my girlfriend had some anaesthetic for her IUD. It was still really uncomfortable and the IUD has caused long-term problems with cramps that she didn't have before, plus of course getting a needle stuck in your cervix to administer the anaesthetic isn't exactly a picnic to begin with, but she wasn't entirely without some efforts to make it more comfortable than "hold still while we play darts in your hoohah."

Apparently a company just picked up the patent in 2023 and is looking to bring it to market as 'Plan A For Men' https://www.axios.com/2024/01/17/male-birth-control-plan-a

The last I was looking, I think a couple different companies had picked up and dropped the idea. I'm wondering if it's just not cost-effective to bring it to market, given the relatively low treatment frequency and the fact that I'm guessing most insurances won't cover it right away (leading couples to choose options that are covered/cheaper). Hopefully this one pans out; I'd rather my girlfriend didn't have to keep getting IUDs.

Yep. "Male hormonal birth control pills shut down due to causing weight gain, mood swings, and acne" as though those exact side effects aren't extremely common for every female birth control pill currently on the market. They're obviously not pleasant, and it would be ideal for men to avoid them, but not when that means putting all the onus on women to endure them.

Jen0125 posted...
I'm not sure why there's no temporary medical device for men like an IUD for their balls yet

That's kind of what vasalgel was supposed to be: A gel that gets injected into the vas deferens and kills sperm that try to pass through it, stays in place for many years, and can be dissolved when desired to restore normal fertility within a couple days. From what I could tell, it was comparable to an IUD in effectiveness and had very few side effects, so it seemed like a no-brainer, but it seems to have fizzled out. I should see what happened.

Heck, if anything, given the number of misogynists that are paranoid about women trying to trap them with babies by skipping their pills or turkey bastering a condom or whatever, I'm surprised there isn't more pressure to give men more control over the process. There's so much "I don't trust women to use birth control properly," but none of that seems to translate into "I want power over the birth control in my relationships."

This was years ago. No lasting effects.

Plenty of people use drugs and go on living just fine. We make a big deal when drug use goes wrong but we don't think about the countless people that do drugs and are fine, which likely outnumber these unfortunate incidents.

Which is really one of the reasons (controlled) legalization is a good thing: When the only drug users you hear about are addicts that overdose, that creates an inflated sense of risk that scares some people away, but also causes others to underestimate the real risk because they can dismiss it as selection bias and therefore just kind of make up what they want to believe about the risk. If usage is legal and doesn't have to be hidden (and especially if it happens in supervised consumption sites that help to regulate dosage and otherwise reduce harm), you can get a clear picture of what the risk actually is and make an informed decision about whether or not you want to take it. That's a lot better than having to guess one way or the other.

Of course, Covid demonstrated just how bad people are at risk analysis even with clear data available, so it's hard to say how much that would actually help. Still, I'd rather see people make poor choices because they suck at risk analysis than because they don't have the data available to analyze the risks.

Women always have more sexual consequences and pain then men

I really wish there were more male-centric forms of non-permanent birth control. Condoms are too unreliable for exclusive use, and vasectomies are too permanent (they are reversible, but that's expensive, has a considerable failure chance, and the failure chance increases the longer you wait), and that's literally it for male options. For every option that's suitable for couples that want to avoid kids for now but might want them later, it's the woman that has to bear the cost, maintenance, and side effects, and that's just not fair.

I liked the idea of that Vasalgel stuff that was in development like a decade ago, but I don't think that's borne out, which is bothersome.

ZayKayWill posted...
Us men don't get that since a vasectomy is so quick and easy, apparently...

I don't have any personal experience with it, but my understanding is that the worst part of the procedure is that you can smell the vas deferens being cauterized and that's a little unnerving. You'd be under local anaesthetic, so there's little to no pain and all you really feel is a bit of a tug. The incision might hurt for a couple days, but as far as surgical procedures go it's extremely minor. You've probably had less pleasant dental cleanings.

He's not entirely wrong, he just lacked the understanding to express the actual point or draw the correct conclusion. Airborne/droplet-borne viruses can enter the respiratory tract through the eyes (specifically via the tear ducts), so masks don't provide complete protection. There is, however, a world of difference between "don't provide complete protection" and "don't work," which is something anti-maskers seem to really struggle with.

Plot twist: did you say anything? If not, I blame you.

Very often, saying anything doesn't actually change anything for the people speaking. If they're confident enough in their opinions to broadcast them on social media, then they're unlikely to change their minds regardless of how many facts are presented to the contrary. In many cases, people actually believe their falsehoods more strongly the more is done to prove them wrong, because humans are terribly silly.

Public argument, however, often isn't about convincing the people you're arguing with. It's about convincing the gallery. People who aren't confident enough in their opinions to broadcast them publicly are a lot more likely to change their minds if given reason to, and in cases where the public's opinion is important (like the response of the general public to the worst public health crisis in a century), that means it's often worthwhile to engage even with stubborn idiots who only double down on their idiocy when challenged. It is, however, exhausting to do that all the time.

In truth I'm really tired of needing multiple launchers/storefronts in general,

Really, this is the big thing for me. A couple months ago I made a point of cataloguing every game I own for the sake of getting a definite handle on my backlog, and it was a pretty substantial ordeal to document everything I had on PC because I had multiple storefronts to sift through. I've mostly managed to avoid purchasing duplicate games (the only one I know of off the top of my head was buying Volgarr the Viking for like $2.50 on Steam when I'd gotten it in a Humble Bundle a few months prior), but it's still hard to keep track of what I have when I have multiple libraries to consider, and that's resulted in dozens of games I do want to play going unplayed because I just forget I have them.

I'm still taking advantage of Epic's free games, and have amassed a sizable library (~290 games) just from those, but I'd really prefer to stick to just one platform to actually buy games on as much as possible (GOG gets some business by simple virtue of selling games nobody else does, and Humble purchases almost always activate on Steam anyway). Where so much of my library is already on Steam, Epic would have to offer a significantly better client than Steam to get me to switch over to them. Their client is pretty clearly worse, though (even with the improvements they've made), so that's not happening any time soon.

I grab the free games as they come, but I have no intention of actually spending money there. Steam could stand some competition, but that competition needs to be in the form of actually trying to provide a better service, not just throwing around exclusivity deals and free stuff to artificially make people feel more invested in the platform than in Steam. GOG had the right idea with Galaxy offering a unified client to handle games from multiple storefronts, but unfortunately I've found that it's fallen short in that it doesn't run very well and the detection doesn't work reliably enough for it to be a comprehensive list.

I can kind of understand not maintaining servers for online play, since as much as Nintendo could afford to keep them up, that's still a cost with no chance of a return, but the deaths of the eshops really bug me. The 3DS and WiiU eshops already used an account service that was integrated with the Switch's, such that there's absolutely no reason they couldn't just use one universal shop server for all of their platforms and keep them supported indefinitely. The only cost to keep those digital titles up would be storage space (any direct costs incurred by downloading games would be covered by the games' costs), and not only is storage space pretty cheap, they're already paying to store copies of all of these games. The only reason to shut the stores down is to make it easier to sell the same games again on later systems, with fewer options for interested consumers to buy an old system and get the games for less.

if they can avoid looking at the sun itself in general, they can avoid looking at the sun hiding behind something

Usually, when people avoid looking at the sun, it's because it's uncomfortably bright and they feel compelled to look away/shield their eyes somehow. When the sun's partially eclipsed, though, it's not bright enough to trigger that reflex (but still bright enough to cause damage), so looking away/shielding eyes has to be a conscious decision.

Of course, it's not particularly hard to make that conscious decision, even if you're in the middle of something else.
