Poll of the Day > Shouldn't we have the Solar Eclipse be a national holiday?

Not just so people can see it when it comes out in case they can't, but so that people can avoid being outside as well?

The Solar Eclipse must be a serious hazard to millions of people's eyesight while they're driving or while they're working outside, or on a helicopter or plane, or anything that has the Solar Eclipse in their vicinity.

Not only that, but we should use the emergency broadcast system to warn people to stay in doors unless with they have the proper eye protection against the Eclipse.

The difference is that if you look at an Eclipse you can damage your eyes.

then don't look at it

if they can avoid looking at the sun itself in general, they can avoid looking at the sun hiding behind something

Usually, when people avoid looking at the sun, it's because it's uncomfortably bright and they feel compelled to look away/shield their eyes somehow. When the sun's partially eclipsed, though, it's not bright enough to trigger that reflex (but still bright enough to cause damage), so looking away/shielding eyes has to be a conscious decision.

Of course, it's not particularly hard to make that conscious decision, even if you're in the middle of something else.

No.

A national emergency would be more fitting, and as described in previous posts, even that isn't very fitting.

There was a solar eclipse like 6 months ago and nobody cared. Just don't look at it.

This is why I'm only going to look at it for one or two seconds with my naked eyes. I'm also going to record it with my digital camera in 2160p while only looking at the touch screen to make sure the lens is properly directed at the eclipse. I will rotate the screen upward so that I have to look down in order to see it. I'm not taking any chances. Two seconds max is enough to burn the image in my memory, but not enough to burn my eyes. I know it's safe because I can look at the sun for longer than that before I have the reflex to look away. I do have a light stain on my eyes for several minutes after that though. I'll be aiming for a single second, but I'll probably overshoot it. I'll look at the other stars with my naked eyes for much longer than that, but I'll make sure to turn my back away from the sun first.

I love how the lawsuit states religious convictions when some clients are atheists. But seriously, they should let everyone watch it with protected eye wear. It's also a rare event where everyone can be expected to behave. No one is dumb enough to ruin a rare event for every other prisoners. Any idiot who does that is putting his/her life at risk. I even expect enemy gangs to hold a truce in order to watch it in peace. It's like movie nights, but significantly rarer.

That can happen if you look at the sun at all.

Or you could just get eclipse glasses and not risk it.

You're unlikely to get good pictures/videos unless you've specifically set your camera up for eclipse photography, and the sun can actually damage the camera if you aren't protecting it properly.

There are supposed to be a bunch of eclipse parties around my area and a ton of people taking off work to view it.

The weather forecast is mostly cloudy, so they won't see shit.
