I only ask this because The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition is FREE this week. COMPLETELY UTTERLY FREE!!!

https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/the-outer-worlds-spacers-choice-edition

You don't have to pay for it this week. Not a single Euro, Peso, or Yen. If you click on the game, and order the game, you get the game, and it's yours, (at least until they pull the game from their servers, or shut down their platform altogether, whichever comes first). Did I mention it's free?

As an anti-PC gamer, I have no opinion of either Epic or Steam, because I'm never going to use either of them.

But if I ever did have to become a PC gamer against my will, the only service I'd be willing to use is GOG.

I eventually uninstalled it because I don't care about checking for free games anymore. Epic store is pure trash and has been terrible for the industry; when the better cut of profits they offer developers should have made them a strong contender against Steam.

I honestly don't know, because they have been so bad as a game publisher the last 20 years I refuse to support anything they do.

Epic is objectively bad. Their only argument is "competition is good" but they don't even try to compete.

The epic store launched missing basic functionality, while they have made improvements and gotten it up to the basic point it should have launched with at no point have they tried to meet or exceed steam in any way shape or form. It is still inferior to steam because instead of trying to make a competitive service they've been trying to use their fortnite money to bribe developers into exclusivity deals (enraging) and giving people free stuff.

Epic is a cesspool of nft scams that has never turned a profit because steam is just better and is genuinely investing money into making the service better for consumers. They aren't perfect but steam is a service which has earned peoples business by putting in the proper effort. Epic has just been trying force or trick people into going on their service so they can get enough of a share from steam without doing the actual work.

The only thing I can say negatively about steam is Gabe is getting older and I'm genuinely concerned what direction valve will take when he steps down.

I grab the free games as they come, but I have no intention of actually spending money there. Steam could stand some competition, but that competition needs to be in the form of actually trying to provide a better service, not just throwing around exclusivity deals and free stuff to artificially make people feel more invested in the platform than in Steam. GOG had the right idea with Galaxy offering a unified client to handle games from multiple storefronts, but unfortunately I've found that it's fallen short in that it doesn't run very well and the detection doesn't work reliably enough for it to be a comprehensive list.

I don't understand how so many people have their brains completely broken by the Epic Store. Steam is definitely a smoother better designed experience but Epic has cheaper prices (at least in the region I use it), offers 5-10% cashback on purchases, gives a better revenue split to devs, and has basically the same sales that Steam does (if not better). If you need multiplayer or to centralize your achievements on Steam then I guess those are factors but if you just want games for cheaper then Epic Store is good. People that soil themselves over "how bad it is for gaming" or whatever are abject lunatics that should not be listened to.

Free shit is still shit.

Anyway, I don't really care about Epic store vs Steam, I'll take free games, even if the games are shit.

Steam is just better to use, makes sense since it has 20 years of development and improvement. I know Epic gives a better revenue to devs but I try to avoid giving money to a company in bed with Tencent.

I might Epic more if they actually cared to improve the UI but it's been the same ever since it launched. In truth I'm really tired of needing multiple launchers/storefronts in general, I've had so many issues with Ubisoft+EA being underdeveloped trashcans you have to rummage through I don't need another.

In truth I'm really tired of needing multiple launchers/storefronts in general,

Really, this is the big thing for me. A couple months ago I made a point of cataloguing every game I own for the sake of getting a definite handle on my backlog, and it was a pretty substantial ordeal to document everything I had on PC because I had multiple storefronts to sift through. I've mostly managed to avoid purchasing duplicate games (the only one I know of off the top of my head was buying Volgarr the Viking for like $2.50 on Steam when I'd gotten it in a Humble Bundle a few months prior), but it's still hard to keep track of what I have when I have multiple libraries to consider, and that's resulted in dozens of games I do want to play going unplayed because I just forget I have them.

I'm still taking advantage of Epic's free games, and have amassed a sizable library (~290 games) just from those, but I'd really prefer to stick to just one platform to actually buy games on as much as possible (GOG gets some business by simple virtue of selling games nobody else does, and Humble purchases almost always activate on Steam anyway). Where so much of my library is already on Steam, Epic would have to offer a significantly better client than Steam to get me to switch over to them. Their client is pretty clearly worse, though (even with the improvements they've made), so that's not happening any time soon.

I wouldn't say that. It's notably different from single-publisher launchers like Origin and UPlay in that it covers games from multiple publishers, and it's notably different from GOG Galaxy in that it doesn't offer the convenience of being able to consolidate (most of) your library in one launcher (though that convenience is hampered a bit by still needing to have each other launcher open to open the games). I can't actually think of any other launchers off the top of my head (counting all single-publisher launchers with that first one), so that leaves it as being notably different from all non-Steam launchers I can think of.

If it's DRM freedom you're after, the Humble store still has a fair number of DRM-free titles (though decidedly fewer than when DRM-free games was a big selling point for their bundles), and itch.io is mostly DRM-free.

i like having competition for store-fronts and i feel gog does it right. whenever i can I will always buy on the gog store.

epic however ruins this by paying a lot of money for exclusive or timed exclusive titles where it annoyed customers or worse, straight up made those games forgotten by the time they released elsewhere.

I've only used the Epic Game Store because they did the shit thing and bought timed exclusives (Borderlands 3 and Final Fantasy 7: Remake) that I wasn't going to wait another minute to play. Other than that, I don't bother with it at all because Steam is my default.
For that reason, I also don't play Ubisoft, EA or Rockstar games. I'm not downloading another launcher, game manager, whatever to play your games. Fuck off.

After it was learning the epic launcher, scan your system for your steam install and decrypt your steam installs steal something. I never let the thing get installed.
And I'm old, free games don't super entice me anymore because there's still too much effort to go and get and too much effort to maintain them.
