It seems like "generic vampire stuff" now because everyone who writes vampires ripped off what Anne was doing. The book was written in like 1977. She pretty much single-handedly brought vampires back, and spawned a lot of imitators.

This is true, and true of a lot of things that are pioneers. They find a new way of doing things and then other people copy it until it becomes cliche.

But at the same time, sometimes the originals manage to stand out even among the imitators. The Godfather manages to stand out even though countless movies and TV series have copied it.

Rice had a lot of great ideas and she definitely deserves credit for them though.

They're definitely more useful in the tactics style games where having a bunch of powerful characters with relatively little resources is better than a few ultra powerful ones that take huge investments.

That said, some of the Final Fantasy mainstream games have found ways to make them more useful. The aforementioned Final Fantasy 5 for example.

It's hard for a translation not to sound like a translation? Well, no shit fam! If I wanted to understand the sentences in an actual Japanese way, I'd just learn Japanese. When I want something translated, I want it in English.

Look, before I learned a second language I imagined it to be easy. But it's surprising how often it can be hard to decide what the best translation is.

Like one of the most common expressions in Japanese is "Yoroshiku onegaishimasu." If you work in Japan you will probably hear it ten or more times a day. It is heavily used in any situation where people are being polite. The more casual versions "yoroshiku" or "yoroshiku ne" are also fairly common.

Now after over a decade of speaking the language I have a good feel for what it means. But there are a lot of nuances, and it is tied into social norms which are different outside Japan. So it can be quite difficult to translate the expression.

Anyway there are reasons that anyone who is bilingual tells you that translating is harder than it seems, and that people go to school and get certification to be interpreters or translators.

It depends on how good a translation you want. Also I've had people on this site say they want "just a paragraph" and it's this 1000 word wall of text. Also people usually just give whatever they want translated but if you don't have what comes before and after that can make things a lot more difficult. And something like this is likely to have weird slang expressions that are very difficult to translate.

I don't want to be a dick but I don't want to just promise without seeing anything because it can be very difficult.

Also keep in mind that typical translation rates are 10 cents a word so you're asking for something that would cost typically cost 10-20 dollars--50 dollars or more if it's a long paragraph--for free.

Most of the people who say fat shaming is good because it makes them healthier feels like rationalization. They're not really doing it out of a desire to make other people healthier. They want to be able to make fat jokes and consider fat people beneath them without feeling guilty. At least the people who say fat people are disgusting are being honest.

Even if you genuinely hope that fat shaming will make people healthier, you are wrong.

Fat shaming doesn't work. This is because being fat is not a behavior. It is a result.

We shame smoking, not lung cancer. We shame drunk driving, not getting into car accidents. That's why both these things have gone way down. Because we shame the behavior, not the effect.

But with weight gain, we don't really shame any of the things that lead to it. Eating fatty, unhealthy foods is not shamed. Sitting around binging TV shows is not shamed.

Once you've gained weight, you're already at the point where it's becoming difficult to go back. People have formed habits that are hard to break, and their body's metabolism may have adjusted to make them resistant to weight loss. It's usually not just a matter of jogging a few times a week or eating a little less. You have to make big changes to your daily habits. It's not a matter of getting them to not do something. It's a matter of making them feel motivated to proactively make major changes in their lives. And may be hard to judge how much to change or what is more effective.

Shaming them for who they are is much more likely to drive them into depression and make them give up. Because while shaming can be good for making people avoid specific actions, it's very poor for making them take initiative and so things.

You know, if you actually look at the articles from the so-called "anti-gamer" week, they weren't even really addressing gamers so much as all the gatekeeping bullshit of people who see themselves as "real" or "hardcore" gamers and putting themselves above the "casual" gamers or whatever. And they weren't even attacking so much as they were saying that the world is changing, and the gamer market is broadening. "Casuals" will continue to be a bigger and bigger part of the gaming community and game companies will not be paying as much attention to the "hardcore" players. This has been happening by the way.

People claim that it's really about ethics or exposing corruption or whatever but all you have to do is look at the gamergate subreddit and you can see what a crock of shit that is. It's nothing but people complaining about feminism and SJWs, and most of it isn't even game related.

I saw it as arrogant and egotistical Hux wanting to listen to the resistance try to bargain, or even better, beg for mercy so he could gloat and reject their pleas. The fact that they asked for him by name, instead of Kylo Ren or Snoke, probably pleased him too.

Then when Poe acted like he couldn't hear anything it took him off guard. It was so different from what he expected that he didn't know how to react. I think we all have had times when someone said or did something that was so out of left field and it took an embarrassingly long time to process what was happening and react properly. Hux was really looking forward to gloating and lording himself over Poe. Probably some people in the control room realized right away what was happening but they were scared to say anything.

And it's not like Hux thought there could possibly be any danger from the Resistance at this point.

I think many of the complaints with this scene are people expecting characters to do what they, sitting and logically thinking about the situation, would do. And getting mad when the character does something obviously wrong from their point of view. But I think this reaction makes perfect sense based on Hux's character.
