Damn, I just talked to my mom, and Trumpism has ruined another familial relationship! My aunt was supposed to fly down to help my mom move to a new apartment (which admittedly was probably not the best idea to begin with), and my mom had bought extra food, cleaning supplies etc., in preparation. My aunt calls today to say she is not coming down. Not because of COVID related reasons, but because some blogger she likes has been put on a No-Fly list, and she is never flying again in protest! They apparently got into a whole argument about Trump and everything, and my mom said she doesn't know if the relationship can be repaired.

The radicalization is real, y'all.

Why hasn't a Democrat accused the Republican's of dividing the country and asking them to unite behind impeaching Trump yet? You know, for healing.

I think Marie Newman said that more or less.

a couple hundred people isn't enough to consider storming the capitol as a walk. if the people in these masses believed they were on any mission involving killing they would've brought their guns. like that's the actual concern right now - people who are setting things up with guns. what you're saying there isn't what happened but it's certainly what's being planned for right now.

and you gotta be specific on the tweet stuff. we talking about this woman?
https://twitter.com/laurenboebert/status/1346898958900199429

because there's two tweets.
first is they're locked in the house of chambers.
the second is the speaker has been removed.

that is not the same as tweeting pelosi's position. former includes herself, the latter is only saying where she's not. only one of those can be said as having pelosi's position and she herself is there in the locked room.

The second is either A) An intentional *wink wink* *nudge nudge* to the terrorists to let narrow their search for Pelosi, in which case she she should be expelled for being evil, or B) An unintentional version of the same, in which case she should be expelled for being stupid, and putting the Speaker's life at risk regardless.

I wonder how well Mario and Zelda would have down relative to each other circa 2010/11. It's hard to see Mario winning, but logically the two were fairly close in'06 at the nadir of the mainline Mario series (only two mainline releases in the past 10 years at that point!), so how could it not have boosted post '07? It's hard to imagine that the Galaxy games wouldn't have helped the series at all.

Why wouldn't the Civil Rights Act be enforceable against an individual? It is not limited to corporations.

I'm not saying it wouldn't, but if someone is performing a service on behalf of a company, the company would be the entity prosecuted.

The cake shop owner is free to get someone else to design the custom cake though. The owner is being prosecuted in his capacity as service provider/business owner, not as a cake maker. Is he immune from enforcement simply because the business/employee are one in the same?

Say there was a driver for a cab company that refused to pick up a certain class of customer. Obviously, the government could not force the individual driver to do so; any enforcement would come down on the company itself. Would that change if the company/driver were one in the same? No, of course not.

Whats even more puzzling is the Articles of Impeachment even refer to the phone call, and state that Trump threatened consequences if they didnt find the votes in Georgia. Having already alleged that conduct, why not charge a count based on that conduct? It would be easier to prove and harder to defend than incitement of insurrection (which as pleaded requires proof that Trumps statements foreseeably resulted in what happened at the Capitol).

I'm sure that the Republicans would find some way to wriggle out of Trump's actions being a threat.

In regards to the future of the Republican Party, people talk about how the working class whites are the ones that feel a cultural connection to the party, while the WASPy Country Club Republicans are only in it for the tax cuts and laissez-faire economics , but I don't think that's entirely true. There are a lot of people in that Country Club set that feel the kind of loyalty to the GOP that most people feel for their country, the same way that many people have loyalty to their country, even despite it doing horrible things. It's their party; you don't leave something like that.

As long as their local candidates can give them something to work with, they will vote Republican. Quite a few of these people did not vote for Trump, since he gave them absolutely nothing to work with, but in order to fully defect like moderate/liberal Republicans did in 1932 they will need to feel an existential threat. And as distasteful as the authoritarianism of McConnell's/Trump's school of politics might be to them, they have judged that they do not face an existential threat to due to it, and, honestly they're right. They are able to get an abortion if they need to. If they have LGBT children they will send them to a school where they'll be ensured equal treatment. They are insulated from the effects of the GOP's social politics, so while they might disagree with many of them, they don't care. They would need to truly feel threatened in order to jump ship. An armed insurrection is certainly the kind of thing to do it, but it remains to be seen where things go from here, and how widespread these kinds of incidents become.

Glad DC is doing this, but the fact that were in a position where doses are in danger of expiring means that were failing at using vaccines quickly enough. If this is a regular occurrence we should be expanding the categories of people being vaccinated until were supply limited.

To be fair, I've read that Israel, who is doing very well in terms of vaccine distribution, is "pulling people off the street" to make sure doses get used before they expire. I don't know how literally that is meant, but it's not an issue with just the US.

To try to keep some optimism:

Has it been confirmed that the new variant of COVID is more virulent? I was under the impression that there was a possibility that the reason it spread so rapidly in the UK was due to a superspreader event(s), and it wasn't 100% clear it was the virus itself, as the variant doesn't seem to be spreading rapidly anywhere else it's been found. Have scientists confirmed that the virulence is due to the variant itself and I missed it, because the media seems to be reporting this as if it is established fact.

It'll depend on how well they're able to survive the next year, and how what the economy is going to look like overall. Long term, I'm optimistic, but they have to get there first, and there will definetly be some culling in the meantime.

If someone was actively choosing to go out to be entertained prior to the pandemic, I'm not sure why they would change afterwards (assuming they are in the same economic situation.) It's not like streaming is some brand new concept that people needed the pandemic to become familiar with.

What exactly makes SMB more revolutionary than something like Donkey Kong or Pitfall? It's certainly an improvement in the formula of "guy running to the right and jumping" but SM64 feels like a better answer to me. Not trying to be cynical I'm curious what was so revolutionary about SMB.

The scale of SMB was leagues beyond what anyone else was doing on consoles on the time. Console games were just home versions of something that you could play in arcades at that point. SMB was probably the first console game that really showed what the market could become
