I feel like it should be noted that the leaders of the most successful activist movement in recent US history, the civil rights movement of the 50's and 60's, were very concerned with optics. Their actions were all carefully stage managed to appeal to the broadest possible audience. Rosa Parks was specifically chosen for the Montgomery bus boycott for example, because she was considered very appealing and sympathetic, as opposed to another woman who was a single mother. The activists knew how their opponents would respond and attempted to address those issues with their approach.

I can see this leading to a (continued) rise in prominence for boutique theaters like Alamo Drafthouse that focus more on a complete "experience" with dinner and drinks served during the movie. Maybe even bring back entire evening programs, with shorts and double features all being included in the ticket price.

Of course they won't eliminate it entirely but do you seriously see as much for single video games and TV shows as much as you do for any given Marvel movie? Those ad campaigns are inescapable, they tie in with so much shit.

For Marvel sure, but there's not much on par with Marvel in terms of advertising. I live in the NYC area and overall I see way more billboards/subway advertisements for TV programs than I do for movies.

Thoughts?

You can see family and friends without having to have a 10-15 person Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner though. Just have smaller groups meet up instead. I agree that there are people who are very dismissive of how lockdowns can effect people's mental helath, and who are being very unhelpful in trying to find ways to work with others and come up with safe ways to go on living and keep everyone from losing it.

However, that is not what's going on with these large affairs. Is someone's mental health going to deteriorate because they only saw 2 of their cousins this holiday season instead of all 7? Is someone's mental health going to deteriorate because they drove to Thanksgiving instead of flying? Is someone's mental health going to deteriorate because they can't kiss Grandma on the cheek and stay a safe distance away from her at some family dinner? No, of course not, and the fact that people can't be bothered to take such relatively simple precautions belies what their true motivations are.

This is true all across society/culture, and has led to a much more fractured world. There is so much media to consume that people just go for what is most familiar to them personally. I know that this has been blamed on people becoming more biased in general, which is true, however I believe the chain of causation in that claim is reversed. The original impetus here was pragmatism/the paradox of choice: "There's so much to choose from, why don't I just stick to my favorite?" and this has in turn led to people becoming more biased in general.

There's a statute that Congress passed that says that if the House and Senate disagree, whichever set of electoral votes certified by the state's governor controls. But I think there's a good argument that that statute is itself unconstitutional, as the Constitution clearly gives sole power to choose electors to the legislatures, and doesn't give any authority to the governors.

Supposing that SCOTUS finds that statute unconstitutional, and the House and Senate deadlock, I guess the next question is whether the House has to vote on a new President. If they do, they would vote 1 vote per state so Trump would win. But supposing the Democrats flee DC and try to deny the House a quorum? I think the Senate chooses the Vice President, so they vote for Pence as VP (or, if this is all planned before the electors vote, at least one of the R electors switches his VP vote from Pence to Trump and the Senate can vote for Trump as VP directly).

Then inauguration day comes without a new President, so the newly elected Vice President (either Trump or Pence depending on how well this is planned) becomes President.

But this is all so antithetical to our democratic tradition that it's hard to imagine this working. Much like the Queen dissolving Parliament and ruling from the throne.

The VP Senate vote is only between the Top 2, so you'd need the majority of GOP electors for that.

The House has to accept the Electoral College Votes, correct? If so, I don't see what the point of the Republican legislatures changing the electors is even if they succeeded. The House would refuse to accept the results, would appoint Joe Biden Speaker, and he gets inaugurated on 01/20 anyway.

TBQH, the way the media and Twitter have handled this is really awful. Even if there is no evidence of any fraud, the way they are censoring people claiming there is fraud looks awful. At some point, one needs to treat censorship as a confession. So when Twitter includes a message below a Trump tweet saying "there is no evidence of this" one can read that to actually say "we confess this is completely accurate." Same with the media - it's not your job to decide if evidence is credible. Report the evidence, and the public will decide that. If you insist on not reporting what the evidence and making the conclusory statement that it is not credible, the next step is for the public to infer that the evidence is credible and even compelling.

And if it's actually not, well, that's your fault for reporting in a way that that is the most reasonable inference the public can draw.

Determining the credibility of statements of public figures should literally be one of the media's core jobs, but please go ahead carrying water for these fascist attacks on the "enemy of the people."

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Mainstream conservatives never learn. The planter class thought they could control the secessionists. They couldn't. The German conservatives thought they could control the Nazis. They couldn't. And so on and so forth.

I always felt like Trump was like L Block. At first his results were only so-so and were taking advantage of his hardcore support to stay alive in multi way polls. But, his power grew over time until he was strong enough to start winning. Due to all the mailed ballot counting timing, I think he even had L Block like trends in some states this year.

So does that make Biden Pikachu? A much worse performance than you'd expect based on name recognition in his first runs, goes away for a while, then comes back and cleans up.

Every possible scenario for calling the election is great:

NV: Fox has to call it first

I've only heard of two of those people, and I was speaking about non-politicians. That said, did these politicians ever call out their co-partisans on the left for making such statements? Did other Democrats?

What statements are you referring to? Random comments online? Of course public figures aren't responding to those. When it comes to more prominent incidents, I have plenty of examples.

Kathy Griffin was condemned by left moderates, including politicians, for that picture with Trump's head. Michelle Wolf was heavily criticized by left moderates for her speech at the White House Correspondent's dinner.

I've read articles by Kelefa Sanneh criticizing White Fragility and by Zadie Smith (admittedly not an American, but published in an American magazine) debating attacks on cultural appropriation.

There was an open letter published in Harper's this summer and signed by numerous intellectuals, many of them moderate/liberal criticizing the rise in cancel culture online.

This is all rather scattershot, but without having any actual examples to go off of, I'm just doing what I have off the top of my head.
