I should see Fire in the Sky again. I remember it terrifying me when I was a little kid, and I always assumed it was because I was so young, but based on the comments here maybe not.

The Exorcist.

As scary as it still is today, this is the one movie that I really wished I could have seen in its initial release. Sounds like it was f***ing crazy.

I don't think anyone should be criticizing themselves for picking Scream, though. The opening scene is still legitimately terrifying.

Something interesting in the New York Times report on Trump's taxes that I don't think has been emphasized elsewhere, is that Congress actually probably already has his tax returns.

Apparently Trump is under audit for a massive $70 million refund he received ten or so years ago, and any refund over $2 million is automatically reviewed by a special congressional subcommittee, with all of the identifying information scrubbed from the report. So there is a Congressional committee that has reviewed Trump's taxes; they just don't know it.

I like Catcher in the Rye, although it's not a favorite. Not sure why I thought of it first; probably because it's "less dense." The Grapes of Wrath was my immediate second thought, and one of my favorites, so I wish I had said it instead, since it's not getting any representation here.

Ocarina of Time

I spent way too much too time trying to come up with corollaries for classic films though, and OoT feels like more of a match for The Godfather. An updated, albeit not paradigm shifting, entry in its genre, that was a huge commercial hit, and has been considered the greatest of all time among both general audiences and "serious" critics to this day.

I don't think there really is a Citizen Kane corollary for video games. I considered Chrono Trigger, but that feels more akin to Casablanca. Well received upon initial release, but considered one of many in its genre at the time. Over the years, it eventually grew to be considered the definitive work of that genre/style.

I also have to include:

Tye quotes the pollster George Gallup, in 1954: "Even if it were known that McCarthy had killed five innocent children, [his supporters] would probably still go along with him."

From a recent New Yorker article about Joseph McCarthy. Presented without commentary:

[He] lied all the time. He lied even when he didn't need to lie, as Tye thinks is the case with the war record. When he didn't have any facts to embellish, he made them up. He found that, if he just kept on repeating himself, people would figure that he must be onto something.

He was incapable of sticking to a script. He rambled and he blustered, and if things weren't going his way he left the room. He was notoriously lazy, ignorant, and unprepared, and he had a reputation for following the advice of the last person he talked to. But he trusted his instincts. And he loved chaos. He knew that he had a much higher tolerance for it than most human beings do, and he used it to confuse, to distract, and to disrupt.
...

Like many bamboozlers who succeed by preying on the earnest and the credulous, [he] was easily bamboozled. He often tied witnesses who had little to hide in knots, but the actual spies who testified (and there were one or two) completely fooled him. He hired rashly, and he valued loyalty over ability.

Covenant was so nasty and meanspirited. The ending, while predictable, made me actually angry. It wasn't enough that the movie showed that the heroine from the last movie was experimented on and brutally killed, but the movie ends with its own heroine knowing she's going to be murdered too. Lol, how fun! Sorry that I don't hate people like the filmmakers apparently did.

On a more serious note I am yet to hear any American actually be able to explain what is happening with the reported Chinese genocide. I hear people mention the Uyghurs, but when asked for more info all I get is repetition and Wikipedia stories.

This is a very long article, but it's made up of many individual stories, so it's not necessary to read the whole thing.

On a micro level, sure there might not be much difference for the average user between Facebook or China having your personal info, however on a macro level, China having access to tons of personal information is worse. They are more powerful, less responsive to external factors, and are more committed to anti-democratic expansion.

I mean, yeah, probably. Although for the same reason as why I kind of fled from the "interim House appointments" is because methods can vary by state and you could potentially see battles between governors and state legislatures in states where there's divided government.

CO, KS, KY, LA, ME, MT, NC would have Dem Governors in Red Senate Seats up in 2020.
AL and VT would have Republican Governors in Blue Senate Seats up in 2020.

So if it were simply "Governor appoints replacement" (and it very much may not be!) that's actually a +5 net to Dems over the current status quo which would flip it anyway... I think.

Depending on how inaugurations line up, some of those governerships might be vacant as well, although I suppose that maybe the handful of governor elections that are up in 2020 might go forward for continuity of government purposes.

That being said, I would be relatively optimistic in regards to chicanery regarding temporary Senate appointments. Not because I have any faith in politicians' moral compass, but just for political reasons. There are several states listed, such as KY, KS, and MT, where playing games with the appointment would seriously hamper future election chances for the Democratic governor doing so (I think that Cooper and Edwards are term limited?), cases like VT and MA, where the State Houses would just overrule the Governor most likely, or a case like CO, where it doesn't make sense to antagonize people for a Senate Seat Dems are heavily favored to win anyway.

In regards to the Vacant Congress issue, let's say that the 2020 General Election is postponed until June 2021 or something. The entire House should become vacant ii the beginning of January, but 5 Special Elections are allowed in December to allow for some members. These 5 appoint a "neutral third party" like Colin Powell as Speaker of the House, who will accede to the Presidency on January 20th and serve as Actin President until the election. While the House technically only has 5 members, the rest of the previous Congress returns to Washington and continues their business as before until the election, with the 5 Actual House members honoring the votes of the Shadow Congress. This is all insane and involves levels of trust that don't exist, but it is possible!
