Trump supporters. Half the country.

When did Emily Spanberger call Trump supporters evil? When did Conor Lamb call Trump supporters evil? When did Kendra Horn call Trump supporters evil? When did Collin Peterson call Trump supporters evil?

I'm waiting. I don't see anyone in this post spouting generalities about someone based on their political beliefs except for you.

The left (including moderates) needs to learn to be able to respectfully disagree with others without thinking they are evil. If they establish that, then people won't feel afraid of them anymore.

Who exactly are moderates calling evil?

Part of the problem with the "threat" of progressive candidates is social media. It doesn't matter what a more moderate candidate, or even party leadership, actually says about police reform if voters in their district are reading "Defund the police"all over Twitter and don't like it. They are blaming their Democratic candidates for it. It's unfair and stupid, but voters are unfair and stupid. Short of completely condemning progressives in harsh enough terms and public enough venues for it to break through consistently to voters (which to be clear I don't think is right for a variety of personal as well as strategic reasons.), I don't know what can be done. Are there ways to communicate and argue for a progressive policy to voters that might be more initially resistant? Absolutely, however the problem is that due to social media, those people are hearing different arguments that they aren't receptive to, and tuning out any related argument when it comes up later.

How do you fix this? Honestly, I don't know.

I will say that despite the grousing about Biden reaching out to suburban moderates/conservatives/Republicans, if WI/MI/PA (and maybe GA) pulling through is what gets him the victory, that strategy worked. He did what he was hired to do.

When ABC News Decision Desk Projects A Race, Fivey Fox Is On The Case!
Hey! Its me, Fivey! Your friendly neighborhood data fox!
Tonight, whenever ABC Newss Decision Desk projects a winner in a presidential, Senate or House race, Im going to be sharing those projections on our live blog. Its going to keep me busy: Ill be checking for new presidential and Senate projections every minute, and for new House projections every five minutes. (The Decision Desk projects a winner in a particular contest when enough of the vote has been counted in enough of the state or district to be as certain as possible about who will win for more about how that process works, listen to this episode of the FiveThirtyEight Politics Podcast.)
But theres something else you should know about how I report projections. Ill let you in on a little secret: Im a bit of an emotional fox at least as it concerns probability. Thats why I use FiveThirtyEights final forecast to contextualize the results is this what we anticipated or were we surprised? And if we were surprised, based on our final forecast, I might react as such. For example:
If our final forecast listed a candidate as slightly favored, meaning that the forecast gave them somewhere between a 55 and 70 percent chance of winning, but one of their opponents wins, I will be surprised () when I share the projection.
If our final forecast listed a candidate as favored, giving them between a 70 and 90 percent chance of winning, but one of their opponents is projected as winning, I will be shocked ().
And finally, if our final forecast listed a candidate as either clearly favored or very likely to win, meaning they had over a 90 percent chance of winning, but they still are projected to lose, my little fox mind will be completely blown ().
Now if the election goes as my human data-journalist counterparts expected, based on the forecast, then you may not see many emojis from me. But if the night takes a completely different turn, you can bet your bushy tail Im going to have a hard time containing my reactions.

I voted in NJ, where I normally never have a line, and had about a half hour wait. To be fair, NJ is really pushing mail-in votes (they mailed ballots to all voters, and even in person you had to cast a provisional paper vote), and they consolidated some voting locations, although unless they combined five of them, turnout is up here in a very uncompetitive area.

I overheard the poll workers talking to some supervisor, and apparently someone had flipped out earlier in the day, insisting on using their own pen to fill in the ballot. The supervisor said "Yeah, you're not the only place. People are on edge today." It sounded like they had to call the police or something, although I didn't hear enough of the conversation to know if it was about that or something menial.

I'll echo the other votes for Flat Earth, as it is the option most categorically disproved. If COVID is a hoax means that it literally does not exist, that is obviously disproved as well. There's too much proving a negative with the others to qualify for my vote, although to be clear, I don't remotely believe any of these or find any of them really justifiable.

...The Wizard of Oz.

I was thinking about this, and I can't think of much else where virtually every line, every moment, could be quoted or referenced and many people would know instantly what you're talking about. I mean, sure, a song or something would work, but I'm looking at longer form pieces of culture.

I don't know the term for this, but I'm also kind of fascinated by the concept of phrases like Stepford Wife, which originate as something from a cultural product and then eventually become part of the vernacular without consciously referring the original work. Does that make sense? I feel as if The Wizard of Oz has a ton of these too.

I'm kind of curious as to how Japan is doing so (relatively) well. They had a lockdown in the spring like most everywhere else, but it doesn't seem to have been any more strict or to have lasted longer than other countries. Their government response has, by all accounts, been fairly lackadaisical and haphazard at times, and their testing rate/capacity is far lower than it should be, yet they have one of the lowest fatality rates amongst industrialized nations. Being an island nation helps, I'm sure, and for all I know they're a week or two from things blowing up, but it's an interesting case.

It really does show the importance of mask wearing, which is the one thing they share in common with the other East Asian countries that have done a great job of handling the virus. I guess I answered my own question, but an important reminder of how important mask wearing is.

I was on board with N64 beating PS1 in a console contest well before anyone else thought that was a possibility, but recently I've begun to swing back. The nostalgia balance seems to be shifting away from it.

PS1 might also serve as a kind of proxy for the entire Playstation lineup/legacy for voters, so that's another wildcard factor in play.

What about a court expansion combined with having a randomly selected group of jurists decide each case? Expand to 13, but only have 9 or 11 vote on the final ruling. This would also remove the high stakes of individual Supreme Court appointments.

One piece of "conventional wisdom" that I've come to doubt over the last several years is that sociopathy is something that people are solely born with. We hear about the Psychopathy Test or the three things that people do as children which are supposed to be the markers of their sociopathic nature, as if this is an ingrained, genetic quality, but I'm beginning to believe that sociopathy (or at least conditional sociopathy) is something that can be taught and learned as well. Both on an individual level, and to entire countries at large.
