When the debate comes up about the "ends justifying the means", that usually implies the "means" didn't turn out right, like someone getting injured or killed to stop a greater threat.

In this case, the "means" weren't controversial since no one got hurt,

This makes no sense.

If I lunge at you with a knife, aiming for your eyes but accidentially miss you and hit a terrorist who was about to blow up a school full of 17,000 kids, it means me attacking your eyes with a knife was a good thing to do because it had a positive result?

The entire point of "Do the ends justify the means." is literally "Do the ends justify the means." You can't base logic off one result, you need consistency.

distracts from the fact that the cop here did a great job.

Whether or not the cop did a great job is what's being argued about here.

@Patchwork isn't there actual protocol for situations like this

It'll vary from country to country.

I know in parts of the UK they train cops to defuse violent situations rather than esculate them and have had some success.

This isn't the case in America and they have had some success also.

I think various different protocols can all have successes, the key thing is to have protocols and cool-headed trained officers.

On an actual serious note, the job affects people in different ways, and a lot of cops don't cope with the stresses in the right way.

then they shouldnt be cops

They shouldn't be cops because they're human beings prone to feel stress in a high stress job? What do you do for work?

So, soldiers who suffer from PTSD shouldn't have been soldiers?

Yeah that's a weird thing to say.

Especially considering you have no idea what the stress is going to be like in terms of coping until it happens.

NOT to mention how experiences are going to be different. A cop who sees people murder each other and gets shot at during a routine traffic stop is going to feel different to a cop who gets calls from unknown numbers at 3AM saying "I know what bus your daughter takes to school." to a cop who deals with petty bar fights and domestic disputes.

IS this an appropriate police use of a firearm?

A police officer shot a man in the thigh after he brandished a knife on a busy street in this city's Miyakojima Ward on Feb. 18, it has been learned.

According to the Osaka Prefectural Police's Miyakojima Station, 25-year-old Jota Ideo brandished a hunting knife and threatened to "kill" officers in a shopping area near JR Kyobashi Station at around 11:50 a.m. on Feb. 18. A 38-year-old senior officer shot Ideo once, the bullet going cleanly through the suspect's right thigh. Ideo was taken to hospital, but the injury was not life-threatening. No passersby were hurt in the incident.

According to police, Ideo, whose address and occupation are unknown, was spotted walking suspiciously with another man, and pulled out the knife when the senior officer and other police approached him to ask questions. Ideo reportedly did not respond to police warnings to put the knife down. He was arrested on the scene on suspicion of obstructing public duty. The second man fled the scene.

Miyakojima Police Station chief Setsuo Nakatani said, "At this time we consider (the incident) to be an appropriate use of a firearm."

That went about as well as could be expected unless the bullet somehow hit a terrorist cell leader who happened to be walking past.

But a lot of people are unhappy due to the risk of hitting civilians. As well as the usual suspects being unhappy about cops shooting people generally.

So it's an interesting hypothetical. This was a reality where the cop got a new perfect result but were the means near perfect? What if he missed and hit 2 children that were eating strawberry ice-cream?

Do you think it was the right thing to do or do you think there were safer ways to handle it?

- they hype up the Valkyrie chick the whole movie for her to do nothing except help Thor escape (which anybody could have done) and shoot at the big wolf with a machine gun (also which anybody could have done)

I hated this.

Every other character in the movie got humiliated, Thor got emasculated every single scene.

But that Valkyrie chick abuses Thor repeatedly, insults him, pretty much attempts to kill him and is a complete bitch.

And then she just "changes her mind" and everyone's cool with it and there is neither any moment of comedy nor any moment of action where she did a damn thing.

No Pathos or comedy.

It was screaming for an Austin Powers/Mini-Me esq scene where she's changed sides but Thor doesn't believe her and just beats the crap out of her. Then like Banner comes in and goes "Good news! She's going to help us get off this planet and then we'll ....er..." and Thor is like "OH......."

But it never happened.

She's probably the worst character in the entire film. You could write her out of the entire movie and lose nothing. All you'd need to do is make it so Loki forced Thor's capture (to stop the mob from killing Thor) and boom. The movie is identical.

An off-duty police officer is expected to live after shooting himself in the chest during a heated argument with his girlfriend possibly about breaking up Saturday in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, sources said.

The couple were inside a silver Honda Accord that stopped suddenly in the middle of the street near Wythe Avenue and Williamsburg Street West when the conversation took a violent turn just after 11 a.m., police sources said.

I heard the noise, the police, said Ian Jove, who lives nearby. The paramedics [took] him out. He looked bad.

The officer, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, appeared to be unconscious, Jove recalled.

The woman in the car appeared worried, he added.

The couple may have been talking about ending their relationship, police sources said.

The officer, who works at the 94th Precinct and was not immediately identified, shot himself near the heart, and was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital where he underwent surgery. He is expected to survive, sources said.

A crowd of at least 10 police officers stood alongside the Accord (above), peering inside and shaking their heads, as another group of officers stood nearby.

The officer is the third NYPD cop so far this year to either commit or attempt suicide.

Last week, a detective shot and killed himself at an upstate bar.

Nicholas Budney, 36, who worked in emergency services in The Bronx, was found with a gunshot wound to the head outside Billy Joes Ribworks, his body laying on an outdoor deck.

In January, an NYPD sergeant was found dead in Staten Island.

Sgt. Joseph Pizzarro, 35, a 15-year police veteran, had apparently shot himself in the head at the Hilton Garden Inn.

In December, retired Capt. Douglas Greenwood, who struggled with 9/11-related lung disease after serving as a commanding officer at Ground Zero, fatally shot himself at his Long Island home.

So you'd have to wear a wig and womens underwear and be beaten up by 4 big guys. Among other stunt work.

Pays roughly what you earn in a year and the filming of your scenes will take about 22 days, with some traveling to different locations.

Would you take it?

I don't see this really helping as I don't see McDonald's being anywhere near as unhealthy as people want it to be (and really, even if it were, it's not because of one slice of cheese on a burger or a half pint of chocolate milk) but I guess this is just to make the Internet shut up, which I suppose I can understand.

I agree 100%. Just look at how healthy Trump is and he eats it every day!

It's definitely not the formula that's meant to make baby cows gain a ton of weight (which we then add processed sugar to) that's unhealthy. Neither is it the high grade caged beef pumped with beneficial estrogen and antibiotics that's unhealthy.

I bet it's that damn bun isn't it? Or as I like to called it, bum! Since that's all you'll be if you eat that. I think Trump removes this part.

More or less the same issues as all white breads. It's high calorie and has few vitamins, has sugar in it. But it does taste better.

They'd have to switch to something that doesn't taste as good if they wanted to make the change though. If they can take sugar out of chocolate milk, then they can probably invent something palatable though...well, hopefully.

McDonald's revealed that it will soon remove cheeseburgers and chocolate milk from its Happy Meal menu in an attempt to cut down on the amount of unhealthy food consumed by children, and some say it's a result of former first lady Michelle Obama's initiative to make children healthier.

According to WPVI, McDonald's announced the plan to remove the items from the Happy Meal menu, which the company hopes cut down on the amount of calories, sodium, saturated fat, and sugar consumed by children at its restaurants.

Customers will still be able to ask for cheeseburgers and chocolate milk with the kid's meal, but the company said that not having the items listed on the menu will reduce how often they are ordered. Four years ago, in 2014, McDonald's removed soda from the Happy Meal menu and Happy Meal orders with soda fell 14 percent.

Parents and advocates have long criticized the fast food company for its contribution to childhood obesity. McDonald's has made a number of changes to their menu over the years to combat the issue, such as cutting down the size of its french fries portions and adding fruit to the menu. Recently, the company changed its apple juice to one with less sugar.

According to CNN, the company has been experimenting with new Happy Meal items around the world.

In Italy, the company recently released a grilled chicken sandwich, while locations in both France and Australia began exploring other vegetable and protein options.

Ernest Baskin, a professor of food marketing at Saint Joseph's University, said that the company is likely making the changes in order to both improve its image among parents and to reduce food costs.

"Kids do crave McDonald's, but parents might not always feel good about bringing them there," Baskin said. "By positioning their meals as healthier, McDonald's is likely attempting to make the decision easier for the parents."

McDonald's said that it is aiming for all of the Happy Meal options to have 600 or fewer calories and less than 650 milligrams of sodium. The company is also aiming to have less than 10 percent of each meal's calories come from saturated fat and added sugar.

The cheeseburger and chocolate milk on the Happy Meal menu did not meet those standards. The company reportedly hopes to have the chocolate milk back on the menu in the future, however, if it is able to cut sugar from the recipe. It is not clear when that will be.

In 2010, Michelle Obama launched the White House initiative "Let's Move!" in an effort to solve childhood obesity. The former first lady's program got kids more focused on physical exercise and promoted healthy eating in schools. The program sparked a nationwide conversation about what's healthy for kids, and some say that the recent move by McDonald's is a direct result of Michelle Obama's efforts.

McDonald's will reportedly be making other changes to the Happy Meal menu, as well. The six-piece chicken nugget Happy Meal will now come with a kids-sized fries instead of a small. Bottled water will also be added as an option on the menu, though it will cost extra.

Oh please, no child is fat because they had a burger at McDonalds, they're fat because they eat badly and don't exercise for a consistently long time.

This is like removing condom machines from bathrooms and then claiming it's to stop people from having too much sex.

Don't get me wrong, I support the intention. I just feel like this is posturing more than actual effectiveness.

Thanks government for telling me what I can and cant feed my kids. Didnt realize I was living in Soviet Russia.

To be fair you'd be wrong anyway

Obama isn't government and McDonalds is a private company that can do what they like.

This is captialism. Peak captialism. This is what right-wingers want in theory

To be fair tons of FAQs start with the owner saying "I don't mind if you share this all over the place"

In fact I remember years ago reading an FAQ which started with the owner ranting about how no one can copy or share it without his approval for like 4 paragraphs. It was super weird and stuck out.

One of the best Superhero movies of all time

A deep blue shame you haven't seen it.
