The lyrics here are just really damn clever, and I'm tempted to actually go listen to the full album, despite never playing the Mega Man games.

The Protomen's universe is pretty far removed from actual Mega Man. It's more of a 1984-inspired dystopia rock opera with robots than anything else, so I don't think knowledge of the games would matter.

The Hounds is from "Act 2", their second concept album--which is actually a prequel to their first album and doesn't require any knowledge of their earlier work, so it's probably the best place to start anyway.

Yeah, I really wasn't looking forward to any further debates about Illyria. Her powers are too vague and broken to lend themselves to many interesting conversations.

Popeye just feels like The Host 2.0 from whatever MPFC contest that was... wasn't that character basically "host avatar that automatically wins any match that a hypothetical audience would want him to win" or something like that? I could be way off on that one, I think that was quite some time ago.

There are somehow even more EXTREME panels. Like in order to earn the right to become mutants, they had to participate in a brawl against all the other candidates--which results in them smashing everyone and standing dramatically in a pool of their victims' blood.

There's another durability feat where they have, like, a dozen swords and axes sticking out of their bodies and they're completely unphased in a scene so ridiculous it makes them look borderline immortal.

Enough superstrength that they can effortlessly defeat human opponents with one finger.

...I really want to read this series now. It seems like the best possible sort of XTREME.

I cant say I noticed that line about fighting crime. It actually makes the intro seem less effective to me, since that seems like a pretty vital plot point that doesnt come across from anything shown for the entire intro. We dont actually see them chasing after a criminal or doing anything other than driving around performing stunts. It seems to me like if thats the premise of the show, it should be more than a brief mention in the song lyrics.

Yeah, I agree with that. Focusing only on the secret identity is a bit baffling; skimming the Wikipedia article and video comments, allegedly, the show didn't have any recurring villains or evil organizations to deal with. Which might have put the intro animators in a rough spot--can't really show the characters fighting evil, if there's...no specific evil to fight against?

Theres hardly any story here. All we get are some kids riding around in knock-off Knight Rider cars, and a vague statement about how the kids, like their parents before them, are the secret force of Pole Position. Is that supposed to mean something to someone who hasnt seen the show other than the name of a video game?

Haven't actually watched the show, but I think the lyrics spell out more of the setup than that.

What's behind this stunt show? Only their uncle knows.

So they're traveling the world fighting crime, using a traveling stunt exhibition as their cover. You could say it's a terrible story littered with plot holes--if you're undercover, you probably don't want to draw a lot of attention to your special vehicles; there's no given reason these kids should be part of a crime-fighting organization other than family ties--but I think there's more there than just riding cars.

Animal sidekick was probably just a lame attempt at mimicking Speed Racer. Speed Racer had a much younger sibling and a pet monkey, they have a younger sibling and a pet...*googles* genetically created monkey/raccoon hybrid.

...I'm torn between saying "that sounds as incredibly dangerous as it is stupid" and "I love the idea of stealing animal sidekicks and just splicing an unrelated animal to pretend it's an original idea. We should do this for all cartoons! He-Man had a giant cat, our show should have a...*rolls dice*...giant cat/manatee hybrid!"

So yeah. It's a weird knock-off that steals ideas from Knight Rider & Speed Racer that somehow has the license of a completely unrelated videogame, with a plot that falls apart under the slightest amount of scrutiny. But there was a plot in those lyrics!

...Also unrelated, but I swear there was some band that released an instrumental cover of this song under a completely unrelated name. I found it on YouTube once, but I don't recall any details and none of my search terms bring up anything related. A pity, it would have actually been halfway relevant.

In Tsunami's defense, I think he meant "far above" in a personal preference sort of way. Like there are two high tier songs that he wants to give the most points to because they're so much better than the other songs, but there are also some other songs he'd like to give 1 point to because--while not on the level of the two best songs--they're still a lot better than the worst songs and deserve some recognition.
