I imagine the third game isn't a Sega CD title? Android Assault feels almost like a correct answer (you play as a ship that transforms into a robot at max power), but it's kinda the wrong system.

Young Chi-Chi was playable in Budokai Tenkaichi 3, adult Chi-Chi in Super Dragonball Z.

Normal Bulma wasn't playable anywhere that I know of, but Movie Bulma was in the Dragonball Evolution game. Actually was pretty fun to play as, one of her specials would drop motorcycles on the opponent's head. Not that it was a good game, but it was fun to laugh at for a while.

Lego Arrow.

Batman 3 had an Arrow level as DLC, complete with Stephen Amell voicing the character and the narration. It was amazing, just give me an entire game of Stephen laughing at the series. I know they probably can't afford him for an entire game, but let me dream.

I'd also be okay with implementing the entire Arrowverse (Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, possibly Supergirl depending on plot), but at that point, you may as well have just done Lego Batman 4.

...or Lego Batman 5, if you're the type to count Lego Dimensions Batman Movie Pack as "Lego Batman 4"....

Also if anyone hasn't tried my sons 2 stages yet get to them while you can. I'm going to be deleting them from the server tomorrow so that I can get my new stages up.

I was kinda taking a break from Mega Man stuff, but I did one quick playthrough of his second stage to make sure I didn't miss it. Don't really have anything to say, other than general agreement with Zero's sentiments (even falling for the ladder o' instant death myself). Was fun though.

Thorn Man -SSMB- ID: 59858 (My 9 y/o sons first Stage)

Honestly, this stage is a lot better than I expected. For being a first attempt, and from someone so young, there's actually some really good ideas there. I think the first screen could use some work, but everything after that was quite enjoyable.

Quick Notes

1.If he was wondering if anyone would be dumb enough to kill themselves on the spikes that are behind where you start, he may be amused to know that I was. I convinced myself there would be a secret screen over that way: "If jumping over the spikes to the right continues on with the stage, then what happens if I jump over the spikes to the left??"

...the answer apparently being "there is nothing left and you will fall on those spikes, seriously, why would you go out of the way to kill yourself like that?"

2.It's possible to fall into the first pit (the one lined with spikes), which will drop you into an orange void:

Mxib1LP

It's...odd. Since the screen isn't empty (with the tiles even framing a perfect square), it seems like it's an intentionally designed space... but there's nothing there & not even a background. Would be the perfect spot for a secret area.

3.I like the part right after the checkpoint. Having to get Rush to stand on top of what seems like a bottomless pit is an interesting trick that I haven't seen anyone else use before. And he remembered to leave a Weapon Energy pickup nearby so you can't get yourself stuck by running out of Rush Coil energy. That was clever.

4.The boss fight was also pretty good. I notice that he made sure to have Plant Man in a small, non-scrolling room so that Plant Man's attack works correctly. Did you teach him how to do that or did he figure it out himself?

5.I also think the boss chamber itself was surprisingly well-done, almost professional actually. It took me a little while to figure out how to do a No Damage Run against the boss, but I got him trapped in a rather satisfying loop: At the start of the fight, use Rush Coil and jump over his head when he runs at you. Stand on the first platform, as far to the right as possible. Plant Man should get stuck in a loop of firing a Plant Barrier that goes underneath you, jumping over your head to the upper platform, and then running over your head (without actually touching you) to get back to the bottom corner and firing a Plant Barrier that goes underneath you.

It's a simple and easy pattern, but an impressive one. The platform heights had to be exactly right for this strategy to work; if the first platform was too low, the Plant Barriers wouldn't go underneath you. If the second platform was too high (or placed too far from the wall), Plant Man wouldn't be able to jump onto it. If the two platforms weren't at just the right level with each other, Plant Man would crash into you instead of running over your head. It's so basic, yet so incredibly precise...

Even having Plant Man be weak to Elec Man's weapon fits perfectly with this strategy. Since the weapon fires in multiple directions, you can shoot Plant Man while he's standing over your head and then shoot him in the back when he runs past you. Just good design all around there.

Well, at the very least, tell him he made the best Plant Man battle I've seen in this game so far; I think I'd even say it's a better boss fight than the one in MM6 itself.

Did two quick run-throughs of it.

1.I like the idea of using those bricks to build buildings, then having the player jump across the roofs. Very nice touch that I don't think I've seen in any other stages yet.

2.It's somewhat nice to see Plant Man used, who as far as I can tell is easily the least common of the available Robot Masters. Unfortunately, he doesn't work in this stage; once he fires the Plant Barrier, he freezes in place until that barrier reaches the end of the entire screen... and the last part of the stage (if not all of it) is one very long screen. After his first attack, you can actually kill him with the Rolling Cutter before he ever regains movement; he just stands there motionless, watching the petals fly far off into the distance, unable to react in anyway.

If intentional, it's hilarious and worth the Thumbs Up by itself; if that's not supposed to happen, you might need to see if you can rearrange the placement of the boss room & screen so that he can actually fight back.

Never mind the screenshot. There was one jump on Stoned Man that I had a lot of trouble with originally, just past the ledge-of-bombs that you slide across to get under the spikes and have to jump to the next bomb. First trip through, I kept botching that jump; it was just this endless loop of climb up to the ledge, slide, fall, climb, slide, fall., but today I cleared it first try. Then went back and did it a few more times, just to make sure I didn't get lucky; no idea why I had trouble with it before.

Just finished the Waterfall. Also fun; I did not know those sinking/floating yellow blocks would stop on top of spikes. I thought they'd fall through the spikes and kill you, so I was trying to rush some of those jumps... it got a lot easier once I knew I had unlimited time to judge where the spikes were.

For the first E-Tank: It's kinda funny that you can ride the yellow block down to the Checkpoint, then jump repeatedly so it can float back up to the E-Tank. When I first saw it, I was like: "So do I skip the E-Tank to get to the safety of the checkpoint now, or do I gamble on making this last jump to get the E-Tank and then go to the checkpoint? ...oh wait, I can hit the checkpoint and then attempt to get the E-Tank at absolutely no risk."

Second E-Tank seems to inexplicably be on the easier path. If I go left I skip the Walrus enemy, multiple spike traps, and get an E-Tank. Or I can go right just to make things harder for no apparent reason.

Hardest part was probably trying to do a Buster Only/No E-Tank fight against the boss; but being that you gave 3 E-Tanks in easy locations, that was entirely a self-inflicted challenge. It's also probable that I'm a bit too tired right now to really fight as well as I should have, I'll have to try again some other day and see if the fight is actually as rough as it seemed. Either way, even without any items, it's still not anywhere near as rough as that Knight Challenge I posted earlier, so it couldn't have been that bad...

FUNNY: Try reaching the last room and sliding before Knight Man spawns. Instead of stopping when the boss enters, Mega Man will keep running and get behind him. This isn't helpful (you get a free shot at his back, but then you're kinda trapped in a corner with no escape and he gets a free hit on you), but seemed really funny at the time.

Either way, I think that was my favorite of your four stages thus far. Waterfall > Stone > Fire > Moon. Of course, I like reasonably challenging spike jumps & I think you rather hit the mark where some of the jumps are tricky, but you always have time to react or plan for them. I also seem to be developing an obsession with fighting Knight Man in rooms that are rigged in his favor, so I'm highly biased towards everything in this stage.

What did you think of the stage overall? (Did you say you played the first 2 stages I made yet?)

Anyway, if you don't mind... you got any feedback for any of the other stages I have available?

I wouldn't have done three playthroughs if I didn't like it. </.<

Snarky response aside, I did enjoy it. I think I particularly liked climbing up the floating platforms towards the end. Particularly the last bit with those two Mets above you. I didn't quite realize how they were going to shoot through their ledge, which caused me to get shot on the last jump there and sent all the way to the bottom of the shaft. It was strangely satisfying once I figured out the trick, to go over to the ledge with E-Tank and get the Mets over to the left side of the screen, so that you can make the last jumps without them being able to hit you. It was a basic mini-puzzle that caught me off guard, had minimal penalties for failing it, and rather neat figuring out I could manipulate their AI to easily make the last jump.

I did finish the first two. Stoned Man was fun, but I think I'd probably need to get a screenshot to properly comment on it (which I suppose I could go grab in a few minutes). Moon Base was a bit too easy; not bad, but it didn't really leave any impression. Haven't gotten to the most recently posted one yet.

Finished Forest Fire Station and I actually have some commentary for once!

1.Is it possible to reach the first Checkpoint without using Rush Coil? I did three runs through the level and it felt a little odd being unable to reach it on the Buster Only trip; there's nothing wrong with that, but then I'm not sure why the other two Checkpoints are easily reached without any special items/weapons/rushes.

2:

fSHFRU8

Camera gets really weird if you linger on that flamethrower. It scrolls off to the side and activates...whatever those fire bots are called, who will start attacking from there. It makes getting through that jump unscathed a bit harder than I think it's supposed to be, as you then also have to try to get past the thrown fireballs & all three flamethrowers simultaneously.

2b: If you jump straight up while on that flamethrower, the camera will go...spinny. It'll zoom up and left, then down and right when you land. Bizarrely this causes the fire bot to unspawn; only way I could make the jump without getting hit was by jumping in place repeatedly to stop him from attacking, then bouncing across before he could fully appear. Not really your fault, Mega Maker's camera is what it is, but I think I gave myself a headache there.

3: The flamethrowers just a little past that are occasionally glitchy. At that last part where you jump the spikes and fall through the flames, sometimes the timing of the flames will be off and there will literally never be a clear spot. The first and last times I went through it, at least one flamethrower was always active, so you'd have to take a hit. Bizarrely, the second time I played the stage, they worked perfectly and avoiding the fire was easy? I know it has something to do with the camera glitch, where it causes one of them to start firing sooner than it should and completely disrupting the timing....

Played through every level posted in this topic so far (minor edit: except the one Se7en just now posted), though I have nothing of value to say about them.

Stupid question though: Is there any way to manipulate Knight Man's AI when you're fighting against him or are his actions largely random? I've mostly been playing with the Random Level select and spent most of the night stuck in a fight against him ( Knight Challenge, level 34965 if anyone's really curious). Felt kinda like a luck-based mission at times...

You're stuck on a tiny platform with him, with only the unchargeable Mega Buster, and the far ends of the screen have Hammer Joes floating on platforms that throw hammers every few seconds. It doesn't seem like it should be that rough, but I kept getting stuck in situations that were impossible to dodge; Knight Man running directly at me while two hammers are over my head; only options being to jump into the hammers or get run over.

Fight was possible once I had the timing of the hammers memorized and got lucky with Knight Man jumping around aimlessly more often than usual, but... like... is there a good way of handling that fight?

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the movie one too. I remember those on SNES

Actually the Power Rangers Movie games were completely different on each system. Genesis had a beat-em-up, SNES had a sidescroller where you could jump between two planes (foreground and background) like Fatal Fury, Game Gear had a fighting game, and I...forget what the Game Boy one was. I remember walking left to right and dying, like, all the time.

[I'd count SNES' "Fighting Edition" as another movie based game since Ooze was the final boss, but your mileage may vary on that.]

The Game Gear Power Ranger games aren't bad. They're pretty basic (fighting games on such a low-powered system & with only two buttons kinda limits what can be done), but still kinda fun.

OVER FIFTEEN THOUSAND?? Well, I guess we know which song is going to get first place in the YouTube Score category. I haven't even gotten to later games in the series to see their point values, but I'm pretty sure nothing is going to top that.

It's also likely going to get a high Babble Score because the WWE actually used this for someone's entrance theme:

That's right, someone actually came down to the ring to Mega Man 2 music. This is a thing that happened. I...well honestly I've never seen TJ Perkins wrestle. I heard about it from the Wrestling Discussion Topic, which I kinda lurk at but never post in. I use to be a wrestling fan, but I've lost almost all interest in WWE. I still tune in to Royal Rumble & WrestleMania, but that's about it...and I haven't cared for either of those for a few years. I think I stopped caring around the point Vince decided to ram Roman Reigns down everyone's throat.

[I hear Netflix has the rights to Lucha Underground and I've heard very good things about it. Since I like the sillier parts of wrestling (I am the type of person that gets far more interested in a "Buff Bagwell's Mother on a Pole" match then some 5 star classic), I'm looking forward to watching it instead; I should also look into Chikara at some point, but I'm not sure when I'll get around to it.

...and I'm sure Lucha Underground doesn't do anything as stupid as WCW at its worst (best?), but it certainly takes itself less seriously than WWE wants to.]

I know Se7en dislikes wrestling, but I'm still a bit of a fan. I'd have given significantly more points to the WrestleMania nom; sure it's not entirely video game related, but there are a lot of WWE videogames & WrestleMania tends to factor quite highly in several of them for obvious reasons. Besides several games with WrestleMania in the title, you also have things like WWE 2k14 that allows you to play through moments from the first 30 WrestleManias... so I'd have given the nomination at least half a point of relation to gaming.

I tried replaying 2k14 recently, but I can barely get started on the WrestleMania mode at the highest difficulty. I'm stuck at the Macho Man VS Ric Flair match because Flair keeps cheating... the very first goal is to hit him with a finisher, but Flair almost never allows it. Last time I tried the fight he dodged five finishers in a row. It feels like it's turning into a luck based mission--I can't win if Flair refuses to follow the script and take the hit.

Then the last goal is to win with a roll-up, but I still haven't managed that. You roll so far with Flair that you practically have to get him in the exact right spot where you can flip him without shoving him into the ropes...and Flair can reverse the roll at any point. So you have to knock him down, position him exactly, and then ask him nicely if he's willing to let you try to win the match. Ugh. I should just lower the difficulty, but I'm too stubborn and I know I finished it at the highest difficulty once.

...wait, what were we talking about again?
==================================================

{Have not gone back to that WWE game since this was written. Too many other games I'd rather play than finish replaying that one.

Have watched a bit of Lucha Underground, though not as much as I expected; it's great, but I just haven't been in the mood for a good wrestling show that I would want to actually pay attention to. I do want to see it, I just...haven't for some reason?"}

Now this is a good track. Every time I go back and listen to it, I wind up moving it further up my list. At this rate, by the time my list is finalized, it will have snuck its way into the number one slot.

I've always kinda liked Bubble Man. Yeah, he might be sort of lame, but in an intentionally funny way--not like lame-o Metal Man.

"..a defect in [Bubble Man's] system makes him unable to walk on land, being only able to move by jumping. After seeing this, Wily couldn't help but laugh at his way of moving."

Even Dr. Wily can't help but laugh at his creation. Just picture it: A mad scientist seeking revenge builds an army of killer robots. He creates 8 Masters to lead them. Most of these are modified versions of his rival's creations, taking their concepts and making them even better to prove Wily's superiority. He attempts to create an underwater assassin, one of his first truly unique ideas. It comes to life and...hops around because it literally cannot walk. The madman laughs at his creation.

This also means that Bubble Man's first memory is presumably of his creator laughing in his face about his disability. That is, like, equal parts tragic and hilarious. Tragilarious, if you would.

*Googles that* So a few other people have made up that word. That makes me feel slightly less crazy.

Always found it amusing that he has a spiked wall ceiling in his boss fight, like his master plan is hoping you accidentally kill yourself. I'm not sure if that's supposed to indicate that he's skilled at traps (laying spikes and trying to trick you into falling to your death) or that he's so lame he needs the stage to kill you for him.

His weapon, Bubble Lead, is quite helpful. Since it rolls along the ground, it can find invisible holes and help you safely traverse the Wily Fortresses. It's also the only way to hurt the final boss. So go ahead, laugh at Bubble Man. Where would you be without him? Stuck in an infinite battle against a holographic alien, that's where!

Hyadain Theme:

Sad Engrish-y Bubble Man is best Bubble Man.
==================================================

{The Megas claim Bubble Man's power is the most ridiculous (or rather their version of Bubbleman sings that his power is the most ridiculous), but I honestly think his might be one of the least silly. In no particular order...

1.A Robot that can stop time, but most other robots have a device that renders them immune to the effect anyway & also he built his stage so you can actually dodge his bullets while frozen in time.

2.A Robot with super speed, who only uses his speed to jump and throw boomerangs. Also, is the only boss to not have the device rendering him immune to the time stop.

3.A Robot that attacks with leaves made out of a super metal.

4.A Robot whose gimmick is "made of metal", like, you know...most robots. Or as The Megas put it "My name is Metal Man. I throw Metal Blades from my Metal Hands".

5.A Zippo lighter with flames hotter than the sun.

6.A Robot who can fire miniature tornadoes, using a device that was part of a kite-flying experiment that went wrong.

7.A Robot with a seemingly infinite amount of bombs on spikes, which actually makes sense for once.

8.A Robot that traps his opponents in highly corrosive acid and fights in an arena that eliminates his disability.

Only song to get a perfect score from my weird rankings.}

Skimming the comments, it seems people tend to read a lot of meaning into this song.

"this music is actually very sad. it makes you think of all the pain and hatred in Wily's heart. he's gone past the salvageable point, holding a child hostage. it shows how desperately insane he is. he just cannot hide the evil any longer. its ripping him apart."

"That was really poetic. My personal take on this song was that it was raw drive and determination. The Cossack stages had a more ominous tone, but after Wily was revealed to be the one pulling the strings, the songs changed to a more driving and determined feel. This song conveys Rock's unbreakable resolve to stop this madman once and for all (even though we know that's not the case lol)"

I wonder what it would be like to have such strong reactions to music. I know it's a good song and that it's absolutely top tier for Mega Man Fortress Themes, but I don't hear any particular emotion to it, much less build an entire story in my head about characters and symbolism. They hear an epic story & I just laugh at the random, explosion-y sound effect near the end of the loop *shrugs*

Is it just me or does this sound like the Punch-Out!! theme?

It's a pretty great game to be associated with. I really enjoy the original Punch-Out!!, though I've never finished it. Every couple of years I take a shot at it, but I've never come particularly close to beating Tyson.

Err...by original, I mean "NES". I forgot the arcade game came first, didn't it? I'd look it up, but I don't really care. </.<

Not really a fan of the sequels though. I don't hold anything against Super or Wii, but they've never held my attention for long. I don't think they really improved on the formula, it was just like "here's more Punch-Out!!" and I'm like "Okay, but I'd rather try to finish the first one...?"

If I had to play a Punch-Out!! like game other than the original, I'd rather replay Teleroboxer or Wade Hixton's Counter Punch. Teleroboxer may be the best game on the Virtual Boy (not that there's much competition) and Wade Hixton is an obscure game that never got the attention it deserved. For being a low budget GBA attempt at a Punch-Out!! knock off. The game may have a lot of problems, but it was packed with a lot of heart & soul.

They tried to add more depth to the formula. They added a nonsensical excuse plot and you could earn money to purchase upgrades or hire people to help cheat for you. Yes, the upgrades were unbalanced (one is actively worse than the upgrade that preceded it) and only one of the three cheats were worth purchasing; Yes, it was annoying having to click everywhere in town to find the one person that wanted to fight you. But the characters wee unique! The first opponent is a garbage man who can sic a raccoon on you! I think it's what a true sequel to Punch--Out!!! should have been: Cranking the absurdity up to 11 and not being afraid to try out new twists on the formula. Even if it didn't all work out, at least they TRIED.

....what were we talking about again? Oh, right, right, Skull Man. I guess evil skeleton isn't a bad concept, but when Pharaoh Man has an endless army of undead minions, it's hard to see Skull Man as anything but a lackey. Why should I care about a skeleton when I already fought a bunch of mummies & zombies?

It's also off that Skull Man wasn't made by Dr. Wily. Skulls are his thing! If anyone made EVIL SKULL ROBOTS, it would be the evil skull themed scientist! The wiki suspects that Wily may have influenced the design: Skull Man was the last robot designed by Dr. Cossack & was built for combat, so they think it's possible Wily convinced Cossack to build him. That would make sense, but I don't think any source implies that... so it's just a bit of fanon. An interesting bit of fanon, but fanon none-the-less.
==================================================

{I probably should have corrected some of those typos and broken sentences, but the write-up is what it is.

EDIT: Also, I forgot to point it out: While there were multiple cheats you could purchase in Counter-Punch, at least one of them actively doesn't work. You can bribe the ref to do a slow count, but much like Punch-Out!!, there is a point where it is impossible for you to get back up; slowing the count does NOTHING because it is impossible for you to get up, no matter how many times you push the button. It's filled with things like that, where you can tell the game just wasn't entirely finished.

I still think it has a real chance at being the best Punch-Out!! style game in spite of those things.}

Ahh, such a great tune. For reasons, I wound up going through the worst songs of MM4 before coming back to this song... easily better than anything from 4 and so, so, so much better than the absolute dreck that are its worst songs.

Snake Man is an interesting character. He's the first non-human Robot Master, right? SINCE SOMEONE ISN'T ACTUALLY A BUNNY AT ALL. *continues glaring at Cut Man*

So, I'd forgotten about it until I started ranking some of these songs, but Mega Man 3 takes place on alien worlds. Light & Wily created these 8 Robots to go into space and mine...whatever MacGuffin they needed to build Gamma. Which just raises so many questions.

1. If I asked you to create 8 interstellar mining bots, would "anthropomorphic snake" really be the design you went with?

1a. Seriously, whose idea was this? Did Light and Wily come up with it together or is this design Wily just trolling Dr. Light? [Dr. Wily]: "Yeah, I'm totally reformed! I'm a good guy now! Oh, you say you need some mining droids, well I've got the perfect idea. Just hear me out: Giant. Walking. Snake Man." [Dr. Light]: "That's the...no, no, in the interest of friendship, I shouldn't dismiss your ideas. If you think we need a Snake Man, then a Snake Man we shall build!" [Dr. Wily] "...Seriously?"

2. Was this stage/planet filled with giant robot snakes to begin with or did Snake Man build them all himself when he turned evil? Was he just going about his day mining, then Wily flipped the "evil switch", and Snake Man was suddenly "MUST BUILD GIANT FORTRESS OF SNAKES TO KILL MEGA MAN"?

On a random (err...even more random) side note, he seems to have gotten a pretty nice action figure for the American cartoon show:

http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/megaman/images/0/01/Snakemanactionfigure.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20060703192447

I haven't heard all the intro themes yet (or, more accurately, I haven't listened to them for the purposes of these rankings; I've played all the games before), but I'm fairly confident this is going to be the best Mega Man intro of them all. Which is appropriate because 3 is the best Mega Man game.

I don't care how unfinished or glitchy it was, 3 really impressed me. In part because I played the series in almost reverse order (7, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1; then 9 & 10 when they were released). It was mind-blowing when I cleared the 8 stages and then the Doc Robots showed up. Nothing like that happened in any of the other games and I wasn't prepared for one of the oldest games to have a twist on the formula.

And since I was going backwards, it had the odd effect of being a look into what was coming up. I got to fight modified versions of the Robot Masters from the game I was going to be playing next. I'm sure there aren't many people who got to have that experience, but it was just amazing.

The intro to the game is okay, if a bit nonsensical. I'm still not sure why the game takes place on multiple uncharted planets, as nothing in the game itself even hints at it. Is interstellar travel really so common place in that world that Mega Man can just casually travel the galaxy? I seem to remember space travel being a bigger deal in the X series, particularly X5, with crashing that space shuttle into...a falling space station or something...it's been a while since I played that one and don't care to look up the details.

Aaaanywho, this is a great song for a great game.

Another nice song, but it doesn't inspire me to say anything about it. Thankfully, the Mega Man wiki points out that Flash Man's theme (or songs similar to it) appear in two other games, which gives me things to say.

First, M. Bison [Dictator]'s theme from Street Fighter EX actually samples Flash Man's song:

Why is Bison playing Flash Man's theme? Who knows! Still, it's kind-of a neat reference.

*notices the avatar of the user who uploaded that theme* Awww... can I use this as an excuse to start talking about ponies? I ask as though you were somehow reading this in real time and were capable of stopping me?

*silence*

Fine, I won't go off on that particular topic. For now.

Sonic 2006's "Town Mission 4" also sounds like a remixed version, allegedly:

I'm pretty bad at recognizing music, so I don't quite hear it... but everyone else does, so I'll take their word for it.

Never been a fan of the character himself. It's weird that Wily built someone that can literally freeze time. Bright Man, I think there's an excuse that the flash just disables robots temporarily, but Flash Man officially stops time. That's just crazy. It makes a bit more sense after Powered Up (where Dr. Light created Time Man who could slow time, then Wily perfected it with Flash Man), but...no, even then, the fact that the villain could control time by the second game is crazy. Crazier still that he never used that gimmick again (or maybe he did, I can't remember the exact mechanics of every Stop weapon. I suppose I'll learn as this goes along.)

Flash Man has the most boring Hyadain remix and I'm not going to link to it. You can find it yourself if you care.
==================================================

{I'm surprised I gave this one as high of a score as I did. I'm also not a fan of either of the attempts to give it lyrics; Hyadain's bored me so badly that I can't recall any lyrics other than the chorus and The Megas attempt at it, as I mentioned earlier, was bizarrely Hyadain-esque.

Hey Megaman, join my side
And let me stop this moment in time
You'll be mine forever!

Creepy lyrics about Robot Masters being obsessed with Mega Man on a sexual level? I already have a guy for that sort of thing, thanks anyway. I think I'd peg the Flash Man cover as the worst of Hyadain's Mega Man remixes (I don't have enough experience with his non-MM work to comment)--I'd take being creeped out by Crash Man & Heat Man's lyrics over the complete boredom of Flash Man--and, were I to ever rank all of The Megas songs, I'd suspect I'd place "Blue Like You/Flashman" as dead last.

...though I suppose the regular, 8-bit, instrumental version I was actually ranking isn't bad.

EDIT: Made spacing a bit better.}

I really did not like this song the first several times I've heard it. I've learned to appreciate what they were going for, the duality between this song and Airman, the way it works with the overarching suicidal theme of the four Robot Master songs on the album, I get it. I didn't get it at first; I heard this song, like, a dozen times before I went back to hear their Mega Man 2 album at all? But I get it now...though I still don't think The Haystack Principle works by itself. It leans so heavily on its relation to Airman (especially in the brief spoken word version), that you absolutely need to know that other song to get anything from this one.

And no one knows who Needleman is arguing with. Himself? He expresses some joy that if Megaman kills him that he'll at least not die alone, so that kinda sounds like there's no one else there. Protoman? The anonymous speakers lines sound like him. Compare the lines quoted earlier with part of Protoman's song "I'm Not the Breakman"

You say these things you do are what you choose
This thing you call your will I call a ruse
We follow our path, we walk the program
I’ve accepted the machine I am

That sounds exactly like what was being told to Needleman. But then, why was Protoman there in the first place? Maybe it's Dr. Wily clarifying why Needleman was made. At least one person believed the voice belonged to Airman (or possible the Doc Robot with Airman's data) because why not at this point?

So...whatever. I get why people would prefer this song. I get why some people think it's the best song they've ever done. Taking the lyrics of a past song and inverting them to compare and contrast the two characters is easily one of the most clever things the band has ever done and I have nothing against the song; but I much prefer the goofiness of Airman. It's fun in a way that Needleman isn't--and very actively doesn't want to be.

((Bleh, computer trouble kept me from posting this for a surprisingly long time.

EDIT: It was only six minutes from the write-up to when I got the additional two posts added? Felt much longer than that...))

Having recently replayed MM2, Heat Man's blocks weren't as hard as I remembered them being. The opening sequence is rough, but you have solid ground below you and no penalty for failing it. Once you get to the Instant Death section of the blocks, it becomes much easier.

So, The Megas. Their songs "The Annihilation of Monsteropolis/Airman" and "The Haystack Principle" (Needleman) are very closely tied together. Airman's is easily my second favorite song of theirs (heck, on some days I'd be temped to list it as the absolute best). It is absolute perfection.

First, I love obscure references and Monsteropolis is one of the most obscure (American) Mega Man references you could make. For whatever reason, Capcom of America declared in the instruction manual that the first game was set in Monsteropolis, a "strange multi-faceted land of robot-like Humanoids"--that's right, the Robot Masters were merely "robot-like" in the original manual--which was divided into seven different Empires ruled by the six Humanoids & Wily himself.

"MEGA MAN dares to single-handedly penetrate seven separate empires of Monsteropolis, eliminating the leaders and followers of these sovereignties" (sic). That may be the most violent description of a Mega Man game ever. But I digress.

Second, the song is funny. There's a pun so terrible I won't repeat it and Airman's inner monologue about killing all humans is completely over-the-top goofy. Basically, Airman knows he was only built to destroy and has a slight existential crisis about it ("Do you know what it's like to be built this way? With only the power to push others away?") and becomes more and more unhinged as the song progresses.

Going from spoken word narration:

Up in the sky
Ten miles high
A man stands above the city he will destroy.
Built from airplane parts, his propeller spins as he thinks to himself…
I will destroy these people.

To suddenly screaming near the end of the song

"There will be a tombstone with The Planet Earth ENGRAVED on it!"

Which may actually be my favorite lyric they ever wrote. It is just so goofy: From the way the singer shouts the line to how...well I've already said "over-the-top" but I can't think of a synonym right now. I absolutely love the song.

The Megas take on Needleman also explores some of the same themes, only in a more "serious" and "artistic" way. Like Airman, he too was only built for destruction and has an existential crisis about it:

I’m not a bad guy
I’m just designed that way
No matter what I try
I can’t help but hurt those close to me

And they directly reference Airman's song, going into a slightly inverted version of his spoken word monologue:

Deep underground, ten miles down
A man stands below the city he will destroy…
Stop

Needleman starts to go down the same genocidal path as Airman, but actively rejects it and orders the song/thoughts to stop. He then starts talking to someone and trying to find a way to stop being evil, only for this unidentified person to reject everything.

"How can I retract these claws?"
"Those are your hands, you can't take back the damage you cause"

"How can I turn off this hatred that fills my eyes?"
"You can't shut down where your path lies"

Blah blah blah, realizing he can't change his fate Needleman rejects his very existence and probably lets Megaman kill him, the end. </.<

I fairly enjoy the song, but I can't think of a single word to describe it. So let's just get right to the character. I can't think of Air Man without getting the "I Can't Defeat Air Man" song stuck in my head.

Original Japanese Version (Subbed):

English Version (Dubbed):

That English version gets way too much hate. The singer kinda sounds like a dubbed Mega Man. Sure, it's not the best singing voice, but it's appropriate for the song itself. The song follows a terrible player who gets trapped in an endless loop of failure:

1. They attempt to play Heat Man's level, but always die at the disappearing blocks. There's a particularly nasty sequence where you have to jump across a very long line of blocks that keep vanishing...

(Note: Heat Man is so lame that I don't care I'm using all the text for his level on Air Man. Stupid zippo lighter that burns with twice the intensity of the surface of the sun; you don't get a write-up. All your text goes to a much better Robot.)

2. They go online and learn about "Item 2". The predecessor to the Rush Jet, which would allow them to just fly over all the blocks and skip the sequence. Not a bad plan, I'm pretty sure I've never legitimately cleared those blocks...

3. To get Item 2, they need to defeat Air Man. They can't. Even cheating and exploiting glitches, they die horribly.

4. If they could get the Leaf Shield, they could beat Air Man. So they fight Leaf Man. They can't defeat him either.

5. If they had Heat Man's weapon... but they still can't get through the level.

...that's right, I just explained an entirely different song, which was already self-explanatory to anyone with even a passing familiarity with Mega Man 2, which should be anyone that's following this topic.

...huh.

I kinda try to justify it because some people refuse to click links and it's possible someone doesn't know enough the second game to get all the references. Whatever. There's no going backwards on these write-ups; it was written, so it shall stay there.

How is it the more...potentially offensive Robot Masters wind up having the best songs? This track is absolutely amazing (using drums to create a galloping type sound? Brilliant.), easily in the top 5 songs in this entire ranking topic.

Tomahawk Man is just blatantly racist and I'm a bit surprised this character was ever approved. From a Destructoid article:

https://www.destructoid.com/why-mega-man-6-is-the-best-of-the-mega-mans-158363.phtml

Tomahawk Man, an Indian chieftain who lives on a reserve, wears a ridiculous headdress, and wields an instrument for scalping.

That doesn't even get into his loincloth and war-paint. -_-'. Even in the far off future of 20XX, racism is still alive and well. Though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised: Just a few years earlier, the NES game "Whomp 'Em" was released which somehow manages to be even more racist.

...though the main character of Whomp 'Em was a hero, while Tomahawk Man is an enemy, which...is it less racist if the stereotype is presented as a hero? ...Don't answer that, I don't want to dwell on this topic.

Regardless of my thoughts on the actual character, the song is virtually perfect and not even his design can lower my opinion on it.

My favorite song from Mega Man 4. Don't try to make me explain why though.

Bright Man's one of the lamest Robot Masters. He's got a giant lightbulb on his head, which uses ten million watts of power to blind enemies; this causes a safety mechanism to activate in robots and freeze them temporarily.

Considering that Flash Man had a flash that could stop time itself, it's a bit late for the series to try and justify temporary paralysis. Also, it actually stops projectiles, so there's a lot of story & gameplay segregation going on here.

Like Snake Man, Bright Man also had an action figure made for him. Unlike Snake Man, his sucks.

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/megaman/images/2/29/Brightmanactionfigure.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20060703192100

"Robots are machines that follow orders. I'm a machine that doesn't, so what does that make me?"
--Proto Man

Who dared dislike this song? Tell them I hate them! /Farnsworth

Is it too early to declare this the greatest song in Mega Man history? I know I've only heard the first four games so far, but seriously, nothing has come even remotely close to this and I have no reason to believe the series ever reaches this height again...much less surpasses it.

It's rare that instrumental music makes me feel anything; rarer still for a track limited to the NES's capabilities to do so. That this song manages to be so sad that even I feel it, while simultaneously being a perfect theme for Proto Man... This may just be the greatest song in the entire NES library.

[I'm half tempted to do a ranking exclusively for non-Mega Man songs from 8-bit or less games in the future. See if anyone can find anything on an 8-bit or earlier system that I like this much. I probably won't ever do such a topic, but the thought did come to mind.]

Proto Man is by far the best character in the original series, largely because he's the only one who has a personality or developed story. Light, Wily, Rock, Roll, they're all so thinly developed as to barely count as characters. Blues/Proto Man... there's more to him than every other character combined.

Now I just want to go replay Powered Up as him. I need to find where my PSP's at...

*a few days after the rest of this was written...*

Right, I never finish Proto Man runs on that game because Proto Man is too overpowered to be fun. He's got the shield to block attacks and his Buster always fires fully charged shots, in a game that wasn't designed for charged shots to exist at all. Think he jumps higher than Mega Man too, but I didn't bother testing.
==================================================

{And the third personal favorite (the only one of my top 3 that isn't from MM8) finally falls. Still kinda bitter that one dislike kept this from getting a better score (though even with the Likes being doubled, it would still fall just short of getting a perfect 10/10. Oh well).}

Pharaoh Man is awesome.

That has to be the greatest moment to ever come out of that cartoon. That one clip alone is justification to list Pharaoh Man as the greatest Robot Master of all time. By the time you factor in his simply awesome design, his army of minions (over one thousand mummiras, not to mention the ability to summon robot zombies in the arcade game), multiple weapons, and levitation... there is no counter argument to be made. Pharaoh Man is the best.

...though if this game is set in Russia then why is there a robot designed to explore pyramids? Where in Russia is Pharaoh Man's stage supposed to be set? Why do they even use a real country like Russia, especially since MM3 was set in such exciting locales as "green planet" and "yellow planet"? Why is the Pharaoh Shot powered by solar energy when Pharaoh Man is designed to explore dark tombs?

The answers obviously being: Pharaoh Man is so awesome that he will always exist even if there's no valid reason for his creation; the stage is wherever the hell the greatest Robot Master wants it to be; no one cares; shut up and stop questioning the great Pharaoh Man.

Ah, Metal Man. So weak. So useless. His weakness is his own weapon... if he tripped, he'd probably instantly kill himself before Mega Man even showed up. The wiki somehow makes him sound even lamer:

"He enjoys playing with Flying Discs in his spare time, but dislikes it when dogs get in his way by catching them. When Dr. Light saw Metal Man for the first time, he remarked that he was "the dentist of the future".

Evil robot dentist that is his own worst enemy gets upset by dogs stealing his Frisbees. That may just be the most pathetic villain bio I have ever read.

"Also, a glitch in the Game Boy game Mega Man II can leave Metal Man stuck in the walls, making him harmless"

...you poor, sad, defective robot. I'm surprised Dr. Wily didn't quit in disgrace after making you.

Stage was alright, I guess. A simple level filled with conveyor belts. I think the only reason anyone cares about Metal Man is how broken his weapon is; it can be aimed in multiple directions, has a ridiculous amount of ammo (that can be glitched into infinite ammo with a minimum amount of effort), and deals too much damage. With a weapon like that, he should be the strongest Robot Master in history! Think about it: An infinite supply of high damaging buzz saws & you fight him on a conveyor belt that he has full control over. Yet, somehow, he's one of the absolute weakest Robot Masters in history.

Song is okay, but being associated with this failure knocks it down a bit in my mind.

Metal Man did get the absolute best song by Hyadain though:

Metal Man > Quick Man > Bubble Man. I'd rather not think about Crash or Heat Man and Flash Man was just boring, but the first three songs were pretty good.

{Of course that was written before I somehow managed to get killed by Metal Man on my recent run through MM2. Still disappointed that my abilities have fallen that far.

Tried listening to the song again right now and I...don't get the love for it, honestly. If anything, I think I might have it a bit too high. I...guess I might give it credit in that he got the only Hyadain theme I really like (The Quick Man cover is impressive; Bubble Man's is amusing; Metal Man's is actually good)? Like Crash Man, I can't hear the stage theme without Hyadain's lyrics getting stuck in my head, but I actually like this one.

I'd say Metal Dance is probably one of The Megas weakest songs. Maybe the second worst song on Get Equipped? Blue Like You, Flash Man's theme, is easily the worst. And strangely Hyadain-esque in its lyrics, but I digress...}

I feel like this should have been divided into two songs: The one that plays during the intro scene and then the vastly superior part at the Press Start screen. The intro scene and music might just be the most defining parts of Mega Man... or maybe I just think that because Retro City Rampage told me it was

That game told me that parodying Mega Man 2's intro was horribly overdone (and then proceeded to do it anyway, because admitting you're creatively bankrupt justifies it?) and I never questioned it. And for all my talk of not really noticing music, this is one of the few tracks that I instantly recognized, so it must be pretty great.

There was a time before I searched Plant Man on Google and clicked a music link. Before Gary Young's Plantman burned itself into my brain, destroying my will to exist on this planet any longer.

The song plays in my mind, on an endless loop. There is no escape. No peace. All thought has been replaced by the incessant droning of this...person.

The Plantman knows that the plants will grow.
The Plantman knows that the plants will grow.
The Plantman knows that the plants will grow.

Mega Man 4 was ruined forever when I researched the characters in it. Mega Man 6 was ruined forever when I searched for Plant Man. The sad part is that I used to like the Robot Master. He was bright & colorful & "robot plant" was such an absurd concept that it made me laugh.

There is no laughter now. Only the pain that comes from having a wretched noise echoing in your mind for all eternity. I fear I shall never again know peace.

The Plantman knows that the plants will grow.
The Plantman knows that the plants will grow.
The Plantman knows that the plants will grow.

*later*

Okay, now that I'm back to whatever passes for normal with me, I can get back to this. Plant Man is the second greatest Robot Master in history.

"Plant Man's original sprite from Mega Man 6 is interesting in the sense that it breaks the 3 color limitation that sprites usually have, instead having 5 different colors (green, purple, pink, yellow, and the usual skin color) along with black and white."

I told you he was colorful, but did you ever notice that he's so colorful he actually breaks the rules about how colorful a sprite can be? Plant Man does not care about your puny, 8-bit systems' weaknesses!

"Interestingly enough Plant Man is weak to Gyro Attack in Mega Man: The Power Battle but in Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters Gyro Man is weak to Plant Barrier (Plant Man's weakness having been switched to Atomic Fire), so both bosses switch weaknesses between games."

Plant Man isn't just awesome enough that he appears in both Arcade games, he actually switches his weaknesses to confuse you. Oh, you remember him being weak to Gyro Man? HA! The weaknesses have been flipped, so now what are you gonna do?

Win anyway because Plant Man isn't the best fighter, okay, I will give you that. And maybe Plant Barrier is just a prettier version of Leaf Shield. And it's weaker, as it strangely does not protect you from the Robots that are weak to it. He doesn't need a good weapon, because he can create his own minions. In Power Fighters 2, he can plant seeds that grow into little sentry turret plants that help him shoot at you. And at his highest difficulty, he can actually create flying robot plants.

That's right, he has an infinite army of flying robot plants. Does your favorite Robot Master do anything that awesome? NO. NO THEY DO NOT. Unless your favorite is Pharaoh Man, in which case, yeah Pharaoh Man is definitely the best.
==================================================

{FUN FACT: To keep myself surprised throughout this ranking, I only looked up where a select few songs placed in the combined ranking and had no idea Plant Man was up next. My "eventually" comment wasn't to throw people off track; I didn't see it coming either!

And I'm not clicking that YouTube link again. I may have been too harsh on that...thing...but I'm not going to find out.}

MUGEN is pretty amazing. I haven't really played in quite a bit myself though... I just run monthly AI tournaments with a variety of rules for a couple people over at Random Insanity who pick the entrants. Not really anything special, but it amuses us and it's a fun way to kill some time each month.

A Saudi Arabian oil bot with a stage covered in oil fields. I enjoy this stage's song, but I'm having a hard time thinking about music now. After the Plant Man Incident, I just...can't focus on music. The other song is too insidious, too powerful, these little MIDI tunes can't break through.

...yeah, I'm taking a break. I should film the last MUGEN matches anyway. Hopefully later tonight, or tomorrow at the worst, I'll be able to focus on music again.

*later*

Okay, thankfully I have a short attention span at times and can move on. Unfortunately, I still can't think of a way to describe music or add to this write-up in any way. I could bring up the racism aspect--the turban, the pointy shoes, and did I mention the oil fields?--but he's still not as blatantly racist as Tomahawk Man, so I don't care as much as I probably should.
==================================================

{We'll get to Plant Man eventually. And apparently I was filming a MUGEN tournament over on RI when I wasn't doing write-ups. Makes sense since I'm usually running one or doing prep-work on the next one, but I had thought I'd taken a break while working on this project.}

A very good song that is wasted on a completely uninteresting character.

Hey, it is Wood Man!
His gimmick is "made of wood".
God, this is stupid.
==================================================

{Megas version of the song isn't bad. Not great, but I'll give it credit for the fairly humorous line "My level has robotic ostriches, bats, and big monkeys!"

...a bit too literal, perhaps, but still funny.}

Also this was always meant to have 200 songs, so it would have been...tricky for him to add other games. One would have to decide how many songs from & Bass to include and then remove an equal amount of songs to make room for them all. Certainly wouldn't have been a fun task.

Btw, I came late to this thread so...is there a reason why Megaman and Bass and Time Man / Oil Man is not in this ranking?

I had actually asked about that last topic, but I don't remember what the answer was and the topic has long since purged.

Se7en only wanted the games numbered 1-10; no spin-offs (even canon ones) or remakes.

I've half-joked about doing my own ranking of spin-offs & missing songs but a mixture of laziness--both in terms of ranking another couple hundred songs & even deciding which to include (Complete Works deserves recognition, but would take up over half the list by itself and even I can only listen to so many inferior piano covers of NES songs)--having a large backlog of games that I could be playing instead of listening to songs for hours on end, and general lack of interest has kept me from doing...well, anything. And probably always will.

But still, we can all gaze longingly at the Powered Up soundtrack and dream of what could have been!

EDIT: There's still debate on if & Bass is canon or not? But 9's ending referenced it as one of the times Wily was defeated. That seemed pretty definitive to me, but whatever.

A very good song for a less-than-great Robot. An anthropomorphic submarine/torpedo is...I wouldn't say bad exactly, but...I dunno. It's odd, but not in an adorably weird way like Top or Sheep Man?

The wiki doesn't have any interesting trivia about him and no one says much in the YouTube comments. I guess no one really has anything to say about Dive Man, but at least he has a good theme.

10 games and a grand total of three female characters: Roll, Kalinka, and Splash Woman. If you add the kart racing game then there was a female reporter bot, but who cares about Battle & Chase? Capcom didn't even bother localizing that one until it was added as a bonus in the X Collection.

Roll > Splash Woman > Kalinka > Plum. Plum is completely irrelevant, even in the one spin-off she appeared in; Kalinka is cute, but ruined for reasons mentioned in another write-up ; Splash Woman is notable as the only female Robot Master, but they just had to make her the most frail and take double damage from attacks because even if you're an artificial lifeform just being referred to with female pronouns automatically makes you an inferior being ((actually it could just be a balancing thing because she's harder to hit with the Mega Buster than other bosses, and Cut Man is even more frail than she is, but let me pretend to be outraged anyway)); Roll at least has Marvel VS Capcom, Tatsunoko VS Capcom, and Powered Up for playable appearances.

...though Roll has a tendency to be stuck as an absolute bottom tier joke character, so even those playable appearances are a bit dubious. I like trying to win with a cute little housekeeping girl because she's so adorable & it just feels better winning with such a weak character, but I can see why normal people would hate Roll in her few playable appearances.

I do really like this song. I read somewhere that this was a remix of another Robot Master's theme and I planned on commenting on that, but I can't find which one it was and don't want to keep clicking every theme until I hit it again. Well, whatever; this is an example of a remixed song being done right and probably the only time in Mega Man 9 did it right. It's different enough to stand on its own and felt like an improvement over the original.
==================================================

{Just to be clear, that was fake joking outrage. One would hope the fact that I directly said I was pretending would point that out, but somehow I have the feeling people would ignore that part.}

That one Dislike really tanks the YouTube Score. There's something amusing about some anonymous user taking time out to complain about a song, damaging that song's value on a completely different ranking that may be taking place years after the original complaint. It's kinda funny. And cosmic-y, like "we're all connected across time & space"-y kinda way.

I'm not a fan of the song itself, but it seems fairly appropriate for the character and stage. Of course, I remember this stage--no one could play through MM2 and forget about it. Instant death lasers that you can only avoid by perfectly memorizing the sequence and reacting before you even see said lasers.

...or you could freeze time with the Time Stopper. Which would be much easier, but I was always the type to charge through without it. I use to be the type of person that hoards ammo and items, forever. I'm getting a bit better at using consumables, but...you know how it is. "I can't use this now, what if I need it later??"

Quick Man himself is alright as far as Robot Masters go. Jumpy boomerang guy isn't exactly a cool concept, but he's certainly not lame. He just kinda...is, I guess? No strong feelings one way or the other. The User is a nice guy--our time at Johnbobb's adventure RPG might be the highlight of all my time on GameFAQs--but I'd rather not ramble about GameFAQs Users.

"Quick Man is made of lightweight materials, allowing him to move at very high speeds, but this can easily cause him to be blown away by weapons like the Air Shooter. "

That would be a neat piece of trivia, were it not for the fact that Air Shooter doesn't do any extra damage to him. He's weak to Time Stopper & Crash Bomber. Why give him a canon weakness to Air Shooter if it only deals as much damage as the Mega Buster? ...and why are we calling it a Mega Buster in 2, wasn't it still the Plasma Cannon until whichever game introduced the ability to charge it?

*checks*

Looks like it was only called the Plasma Cannon when translated. Never mind then.

While researching Crash Man, I learned that Hyadain (the person who made the...uhh..."remix" of Crash Man's song I'll reference wherever Crash Man winds up appearing on this ranking) made a lot of other songs. Quick Man's song is particularly impressive, if not his best work:

So much better than Crash Man's...thing and makes me like Quick Man more. Doesn't help this particular song's ranking (though it has the added effect of taking up more space here, which increases the word count and helps that score, so I guess it actually is helping the ranking?). Welp, either way.
==================================================

{Of course he was weak to the Air Shooter in Power Battles, which is what that quote would be referencing. No idea how I missed that.

And yes, I do have this as the worst actual song from the second game. Actually only the incredibly short Password/Stage Select/Weapon Get themes got lower scores.

Since this ranking, I've started to hate the character for completely unrelated reasons that I don't want to get into.

I was going to say I didn't like any of The Megas three versions of this song, but I suddenly can't remember if I actually heard the acoustic one. I was sure I listened to everything on their page, but I can't recall how that one sounded, so I'll hold off on judgment until I refresh my memory on that one.}

The first result for Blizzard Man is an Andy Samberg SNL skit. So, that's a thing.

An anthropomorphic robot snowball that is also a champion Olympic skier. Blizzard Man may not be one of my favorites, but he's definitely in the top 50% somewhere. I'm also a fan of his Blizzard Attack: four snowflakes that appear behind the user and fly in multiple directions. There aren't all that many spread shot attacks in the series and it's strangely pretty for a weapon.

...No idea why snowflakes can destroy robots and the game doesn't even try to explain it, but it still looks pretty.

Song is nice, even though I have nothing to say about it.
