I thought Bright Shield was just healing and damage? The last move was pretty broken (massive healing and damage to everyone), but I don't recall it having actual death moves.

Tir did, but even in a dream with Ghost Timberlake, I knew those didn't work.

Well, I just had the dumbest Mercs dream ever, which is impressive considering that I'm neither a player nor a regular voter. Someone had raged quit and disbanded their team in the middle of a game, people were angry that whoever they were going to be fighting got a free win without having to use any Abilities, and Kanz decided to run the match "for fun" to see what would happen.

Somehow I wound up getting stuck with the quitter's team, in spite of absolutely no idea what I was doing. I can't recall the full roster, but I recall some of the convoluted mess:

My Team

108 Stars of Destiny: Each match, you can pick any six members of the 108 Stars of Destiny from Suikoden 1 and field them for one roster slot. The character was upgraded, further allowing the Stars of Destiny from Suikoden 2 to be selected.

I had Tir McDohl (main character of Suikoden I ; Soul Eater was fully upgraded, but could not use any of its Instant Kill abilities) & Riou (main character of Suikoden 2 ; Bright Shield fully upgraded). The other four slots were randomized when I ran out of time trying to do research to see if I could plausibly argue anyone from either game to do anything.

Luca Blight: As seen in whatever version of Mercs he most recently appeared in.

Luc: As seen in Suikoden 3 during his boss fights. There was debate on if Suikoden 1 or 2 Luc could be chosen while 3 Luc was in play; conclusion was "yes, yes they could".

Opponent Team

Ansem, Seeker of Darkness: As seen in his Kingdom Hearts 1 final battle with access to all forms.

Justin Timberlake's Ghost: Possesses the body of a random post-roster's Enemy Merc. Justin will start near his teammate's and have a vague idea of what his victim's powers are, but has no training with any said powers or weapons. He hit one of the randomized stars of destiny.

And then two other RPG villains that I can't recall.

Opponent Team had some effect that would allow them to pick any terrain in the entire game, but they had not chosen one at the time in the dream, because they were as lost as I was.

Third Party

Thomas: From Suikoden 3. He and his immediate circle of allies ("Cecile, the then self-appointed commander of the Castle Guards, Juan, a rather lazy Bujustu instructor, Piccolo, an old fortune teller, Martha, an old Karayan lottery ticket seller, Muto, a scatterbrained Kobold warehouse keeper, Sebastian, the worrywart butler, and Eike, the castle's gloomy librarian" from the Suikoden Wiki) have chosen the selected terrain to be the home of their new headquarters!

They have set up a base camp in the exact center of the terrain. While they wish to avoid the battle, they will defend their new home if need be. In addition, they consider everyone on my team to be very good friends of their and may be persuaded to join the battle.



No, this didn't make any more sense in the dream than it does here.

Yeah, after song #300's ranking, I was pretty sure that was coming soon. Jokes are always risky (jokes with scare cords doubly so), but I like what I like and stand by all of my nominations.

Emil/Karma isn't bad, but this isn't a particularly difficult choice in the least.



Contest was fun, lot of great songs that I never would have heard elsewhere (most of which went out in the first round... </.<), would participate again. Since I wasn't around for the Best OST contest, I don't have any real opinion on it. I imagine I'd try to show up and vote for it, but I can't have much opinion on something I'm only vaguely aware of.

Super Sonic Racing has grown on me over the years (appearances in Brawl and Generations helped), but I do prefer most of the other tracks in the game. And I couldn't really say what songs were in past contests; this is the first time I actually followed any of the VGMCs, so I wasn't aware even one Sonic R song made it into a past one.

Don't really have many thoughts on the David Bowie song (like it, nominated it at someone else's ranking topic, only nominated it again because I was having trouble finding anything for the 10's category).

Diamond in the Sky

I know I shouldn't have nominated this, but I couldn't help it. I was going over my entire playlist on shuffle, just hitting songs at random and trying to find one more 90's song to nominate... most songs I would dismiss after only about ten seconds, just very "nope, not doing that; not that either; nope". The only two songs I paused to listen to in their entirety were this track and "Back In Time", also from Sonic R.

And while my instructions were quite specifically to not nominate video game songs, I just... honestly could not find a song that I wanted to nominate more than this. I stopped shuffling songs and just started listening to the entire Sonic R soundtrack, letting myself become lost in memories for a while. I spent so much time playing that game; for a while, I was doing 100% completion speedruns on a nightly basis. I was pretty decent at it, if I do say so myself--not "world record" decent, but I was definitely better at Sonic R than I was at any other game I've played.

And this was my favorite song. Everyone always goes for Super Sonic Racing since it's the main theme & has been in other games or "Can You Feel the Sunshine?" because of the Tails Doll meme or it playing during the first stage. This poor track never gets any attention... it doesn't help that the song is replaced by Super Sonic Racing if you play the course as Super Sonic. Who you probably are playing as, assuming you collected the Chaos Emeralds on the earlier courses, because there's no reason to not play as him... except of course to get this song instead.

I know it's not great. It's a fairly standard love song by someone who never had a successful career and it repeats itself too often. But I can't help it; there's so much nostalgia associated with this song (all the Sonic R songs, honestly) that I can't even begin to look at it objectively. And honestly, I think Se7en will probably be kinder to a generic love song here than the VGM contest people would, so this was as good a time to nominate it as I was ever going to get.

...that being said, I wouldn't be surprised for it to come in dead last. I knew what I was getting into here, but I stand by the nomination.
