Huh, I did not know that. I'd heard the name Gnarls Barkley before, but knew nothing about them. I've heard this song often enough, but just kinda thought of it as "that other Cee Lo Green song" since I'd never heard it was released under a different name.

Both very good songs, I prefer Ghosttown (especially the ambiance created by the first 25-ish seconds) but Fast Break Title is also pretty neat.

...sorry for the lack of a detailed write-up, but they just didn't really inspire any lengthy commentary.

I figured that would have been the least controversial of the picks! Though you may have a point about Geoff Follin... I never looked into him, but he's credited on Gauntlet III and that game's intro (the C64 version at any rate) was probably my favorite Follin song. Also a big fan of the Ultraverse Prime theme, a hilariously cheesy prog rock epic actually sung by Geoff. And I already mentioned Surfer's soundtrack.

...I should probably check more of his work, at some point.

9: Hey, hey, they're The Monkees!

I've mentioned my nostalgia for this band at least once before, but did you know they were the first band I really loved? I couldn't get enough of their music when I was really little and I'd get so excited whenever old reruns of their show would come on... but what to choose?

"I'm a Believer" because people already know the song thanks to a cover appearing in Shrek?

"Daydream Believer", possibly my current favorite song of theirs?

"Steppin' Stone", the other candidate for my favorite song by The Monkees which offers a much harsher and crueler tone than their other greatest hits?

"Last Train to Clarksville", their subtle attempt at an anti-war song? Lotta stories to tell about that one... or do I fully embrace the insanity and pick an objectively terrible song because it was my favorite when I was really, really little? Like there was ever an option...

Gonna Buy Me a Dog:

It's charitable to even call this a song. Allegedly this was written as a serious song, but they went nuts and improvised...this. It's insanity; misssed cues, off key singing, terrible puns, the group constantly breaking into laughter--and I absolutely adored it, once upon a time. Surprisingly enough, I still kinda like it; it's goofy and fun.

==================================

==================================

10.Something furry.

I could go mainstream and pick something Disney related, but let's be honest. That's too easy and I've got to throw in at least one Chipettes' song before this topic series purges. Obviously we have to have a Chipettes doing an unlicensed cover of a Disney song! (Seriously, the album had to make a note that Disney did not approve.)

He's a Tramp:

This song is peak furry-ness. Chipmunks singing a song as dogs, complete with barking and howling? *contented sigh*

Honestly, if I had to pick exactly one song to represent me, this has to be it. As someone who can't bother to commit to any one form for any length of time and whose had to deal with multiple "you can't meow, you're a [insert whatever non-cat animal I'm referring to myself as at that exact moment]!" arguments, there's something very comforting about a song with barking chipmunks.

==================================

And with that, I can go back to vanishing into the background. I probably should have spaced this out over the course of a few days, but I wanted to get it over with before I had a chance to second guess my choices of songs.

Thank you to everyone who nominated anything and a double thank you to anyone who posted in this sequel topic. I'm done bumping the topic, but if anyone wishes to post any final songs, I shall be sure to listen to them and say something before allowing it to purge. Otherwise, I'll see you all later... in the other music ranking topics I have songs nominated at, since I'm not really going anywhere. *coughs*

Topic was a lot fun and I'd love to do another ranking topic again someday, but we can come back to that idea in a few months. Perhaps April? I like to think that's long enough to avoid flooding the board with my terrible opinions and a good amount of time for me to do other things, but... well we'll see what's going on around that time when it comes.

6: Unexpected pick with personal nostalgia that no one else wants to hear.

You know what songs I heard a lot growing up, but haven't heard in years? Everything from Placedo Domingo's short-lived phase in the early the 80s where he was releasing music in English. Like this operatic rendition of a broadway show tune!

Sometimes a Day Goes By:

My mother used to listen to his few English albums, like, all the time when I was young. I used to truly hate his music, but... well, I think I have more appreciation for him now. Or at least more nostalgic memories associated with him, I'm not really sure how much of my like of the song is related to the song itself. Either way, the feelings were so strong that I truly had to mention this one.

Of course, she typically refuses to listen to anything not in English, so I have no experience with the majority of his work. I don't really know how I'd react to it--I certainly don't have problems with songs in other languages, so who knows? Perhaps nominating one of his other songs for me to listen to would be a cheat code for an easy high score, the nostalgia for his voice combining with the joy of finding a new song catapaulting you straight to victory! Or perhaps my bias against traditional music overrides everything and you come in dead last. Probably one or the other, I highly doubt you'd get an average score out of it.

Something to keep in mind if you feel like gambling whenever I do a topic like this again in the future!

==================================

==================================

7: I have no idea what this next song is.

So, you know "M.U.G.E.N.", right? Fighting game engine where people have created thousands of characters and stages for? One of the greatest stages I ever found was based on "Moszna Castle"--it's a truly beautiful stage. It is complimented by the following track and I honestly don't know what it is:

I found the song in a video showing pictures of the castle, but that was quite a while ago and I can't find that video again. There's no identifying information in the .mp3 file itself. The song transitions into something completely different around the four minute mark...specifically it becomes "Mara de Buenos Aires, Part 1, Scene 2: Tema de Mara"

YouTube's copyright bot is quick to point that out, but it's as clueless as I am as to what the first song is. I can't actually nominate it anywhere since I don't even have a name, but...uhh...I don't know where I'm going with this. It's also not the type of song I normally like, but the fact that it perfectly suits the best stage I've ever seen gives it a decided edge over other beautiful songs that I've dismissed out of hand.

==================================

==================================

8: Something nostalgic from the 32-bit era

Another broad category with a lot of possible nominations, but let's keep going with the "songs that feel like the opposite of what I like" train!

Dream Fragments (Chrono Cross):

A short, simple, music box-esque song that is a crippling gut punch of nostalgia and sadness.

4: Something by bunbleman.

First choice would obviously be focus tous, but I obviously can't pick that. Going with something else from the album, we'll take:

hellride simulation center

https://inpuj.bandcamp.com/track/hellride-simulation-center

It's no focus tous, but it's still got all the static and chaos that I crave. I didn't give it much credit at the last topic, but it's starting to grow on me because I need more songs like focus tous in my life.

==================================

==================================

5: A cartoonish villain song.

Again, the obvious picks come from The Megas, particularly in the form of the two songs of theirs that I won't shut up about. It's hard to top Air Man's "There will be a tombstone with 'The Planet Earth' ENGRAVED ON IT!" though Heat Man's "From the depths of hell I call your name" comes close. So ridiculously over-the-top and wonderfully cheesy and just the best ever.

Instead, I'm going to go with a different cheesy villain song. From Yu-Gi-Oh!'s "Music to Duel By" album

Face Up, Face Down:

This song hits so many of my buttons.

1: Performed by a fictional character? Check.

2: From or based on a property that I love and have a lot of nostalgia for? Check.

3: Villain song? Check.

4: Hillariously cheesy? Check.

It's not the best song, sure, but come on! He's literally singing about stealing your soul in a card game. This is wonderful. FUN FACT: I came really close to nominating this song at Se7en's topic, but managed to restrain myself as I highly doubt he would have appreciated it. </.<

...if it had been released in the 10s, I probably would have nominated it anyway, because it was so hard to find songs to fill in those spots...

2: Something by The Megas

Because I like comparing people's reactions to both bands directly. There are a lot of options here, if only because there haven't been many topics that I could nominate them at (though I did beg Se7en into letting me sneak one song into his topic anyway...).

Gamma Unchained is too obvious a pick; I've only said it was my favorite song by them, like, a dozen times. And had lyrics from it in my sig for quite a while. I've mentioned my love for their Air Man & Heat Man songs almost as often, so let's remove them from the running... and choose a song I vaguely referenced over a month ago:

I'm Not The Breakman (Street Cleaner Remix):

https://themegas.bandcamp.com/track/im-not-the-breakman-street-cleaner-remix

Of course, it would work even better if we had "The Stand" here so we could directly compare the two songs--as both feature a jaded, villainous take on Proto Man singing a villain song they invite that sort of discussion more than any two other songs by the respective bands.

Anyway, it's a good remix of a good song. I didn't originally care for the original (going head-to-head with my favorite song from my favorite band did not work out well), but once I was able to judge it on its own merits and got into the album it came from, I've started to recognize it as a top-tier Megas song.

FUN FACTS: This is a lyrical version of a song from Mega Man 3, so that's a nice note if you can recognize it. And Rock used a lyric from this song in his signature for the longest time, so if you didn't know where that "My father called me Blues" line came from, now you do! That was a fun thing to notice the first time I heard the song.

[Actually it seems that Rock still has that line in his sig as of the time I'm writing this. Really could have sworn that he changed it a a few months ago.]

==================================

==================================

3: Something by Tim Follin

Of course, I used most of my favorite Follin songs on NFUN's ranking and at least one at DireKrow's, so my hands are a bit tied. Still, a few good options remain; I could go with Stage 1 from Silver Surfer, but I think that soundtrack is already well known amongst those who listen to NES soundtracks. "Horrible game with one of the greatest soundtracks ever", they all say about Silver Surfer.

...Of course "they" may just be voices in my head, but I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. Probably. So let's go with something often considered his greatest work that I didn't nominate because I frankly liked his other work more:

Ghouls 'n' Ghosts Intro (C64):

That storm effect in the intro is truly amazing. How he managed to create that sort of sound with such limited audio options is something I'll never understand. He also manages to get in a ghostly wail and a heartbeat sound, proving that he could make this chip do anything he wanted.

I just feel I enjoy this more on a technical and "how did he manage to do that?!" level than as an actual song.

Funny, but if I meant it like that, I think I'd just be a normal furry? </.<

Aaanywho, I want to take a moment for something even more self-indulgent than usual (which is saying something considering this topic): A list of ten songs that I would nominate, if I were trying to pick songs for someone with tastes similar to mine. It was harder than I expected--I wanted to avoid having any recycling songs I'd nominated at other actual topics, which made things a bit difficult--The Stand (Man or Machine) and Fast Car were my first picks, but I already used those at Se7en's topic... and "focus tous" would be super #1 pick foreverrrr, but it would just be cheating to use songs that were actually nominated...

So... some songs, in no specific order!

==================================

1: Something by The Protomen

My favorite band ever, I have to nominate something... but since I already posted five songs at Se7en's topic, it's harder to find something to go into this slot. The Stand is my favorite song of theirs and stands reasonably well on its own, while I don't think anything else from Act 1 really does. Even so I'm going to go with--

The Will of One:

Not a conventional choice, or a good one. This track desperately needs the preceding and following songs, "Unrest in the House of Light" and "Due Vendetta" respectively. Without Unrest, you can't fully appreciate the lyrical callbacks as you hear Light's final words to Proto Man. Without Vendetta, the song just kinda stops abruptly. It's also harsher than their later work, described by at least one commenter as "grungy". The extended screaming of "Hope Rides ALOOONNNNNNEEEE!!1!11!!!" doesn't exactly do it any favors either. It is in no way a good introduction to the band.

But, I've always loved the lyrics to this and actually used some of the lines for a sig at some point. It'll never be my #1 favorite song by The Protomen, but it is the second best song from their debut album and a personal favorite, so... sure, let's go with that one.

Off to work on unlocking Corrin/Kamui next, the character from 4's DLC that I most wanted--barely touched 4, certainly never had the DLC, but I liked the looks of their moveset. Wish the US version kept the name at Kamui though... tempted to flip the language to Japanese just for the name. But, either way, first I need to go unlock them.

Four Horsemen--It may be the quality of the recording, but there's an almost deafening ringing sound in the back of the track that makes this...uncomfortable? It's not really painful, but the song probably works better without the tinnitus simulation.

Theme of Azai Nagamasa--Unexpected. I know the cast from the fighting game, Sengoku Basara X (though only because of MUGEN conversions), but I've never seen anything from the main series or anime. And I don't know enough about Japanese history to know who this is. Song is nifty and inspires me to look up some information about the character or the historical inspiration, at some other point in the future.

The Dillinger Escape Plan

Not really a fan of the three top songs on Spotify. I was turned off by the song titles and felt, "wow, I do not want to click these names" ; then I got a page with the lyrics pulled up ("If you wanna cry bitch go do it alone ") and I really did not want to click the song.

I listened to it out of obligation to do so; it was not any better than I expected. "Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants" heavily reminded me of "Ningen wo Kaburu", the ill-fated Dir en Grey song that came in 178th Place--which may have been too high a ranking, honestly.

Black Bubblegum was alright. It kinda invited comparisons to Dixie Wolf:

But you forgot that in your fairy tale I'm the wolf
All this attention got you thinking that you're a queen
You think that everything you're doing isn't a dream
Long as it feels alright

I am the villain to you
You are the princess to me
I got you where I want you
Let love bring you to your knees
If I can not have you, darling, no one will
This fairy tale is ending, this fairy tale is ending

Not really the same, granted, but... well they're both songs by metal bands that are less intense than the other songs I've heard by their respective bands and containing references to fairy tales. So that was a nice memory.

Childish Gambino

Still good, though I preferred R.I.P. and Shadows to anything I went through tonight. Looked at a list of his best songs, which gave me "Secret Track" (a remix of a song I still haven't heard which is notable because the internet had to do some work to actually get the track), "Stand Tall", "Sweatpants", and "Redbone". I'll need to listen to more at some later point...

...okay, I don't have much time at the computer tonight, so I'm gonna have to cut these a bit short:

The Filthy Mind--not the best DM DOKURO song, but all of his stuff is good so I was happy to hear it.

Got hive of Ra--When I saw "E.G.G." I thought this was going to be a song from Elemental Gimmick Gear. I'm sure that EGG isn't particularly good, but as an obscure Dreamcast RPG I never had a chance to play, I got really excited to see a reference to it... only for this E.G.G. to be totally unrelated. Song's nice, though I irrationally hold points against it for being the wrong egg acronym.

Bomber Girl--Not bad. I didn't care for it at first, but after Milk Lizard, I've realized how much better this song actually is. I also like having some chaos and this is the most chaotic song I've heard tonight, which gives it a bit of an edge.

Party Hard (Symphonic)--Still not a fan of symphonic covers in general, sorry. Don't think I'd ever heard this song before, so I had to go find the original...I'm not sure if it was a serious song or ironic like Fight For Your Right to Party.

Written Invitation to Death--Another day, another RPG song that tries too hard to sound epic. Honestly, it's several steps beyond that Bravely Default song that was nominated for the ranking, but I doubt it could hit the top 100.

Cabin in the Woods--Kinda funny, has a 60s beach party vibe and while I don't know much about Evil Dead, I know enough to laugh at all of Ash's lines. I could see myself listening to the whole album someday.

Not exactly. I tried looking up information on assorted albums and got in completely over my head. It's like "how theatrical do you want him to be? When he was constrained by a band or when he went overboard with no one to hold him back?", "how dark? You want more of the mainstream pop sound or go back to the more iconic earlier albums?", "third question?".

Then I kinda just wandered away because it was too much to think about. </.<

October's Storm: Nice song! It's got a good sound and a nice message. I still prefer Moments, but I'd say this is a definite step up from everything else on that album.

Feeling in the Night is interesting, bringing a much jazzier sound than I'd come to expect from the band. Not my favorite song of theirs, but it gives a new perspective on the band and was well worth listening to.

Shpongle: I apparently can't spell that, sorry about the repeated flipping of the letters earlier. Anyway, I see why the band (or artist, let's not pretend I know who or what they are) wound up where it did--the nominated song was interesting, but not really amazing... and the trippier Shpongle songs tend to run too long. "Divine Moments of Truth" starts off incredible--research says the vocal parts are being played forwards and backwards, giving this distorted effect. Then we've got throat singers, style changes, it's so unique that I'm drawn into it... but it just doesn't need to be over ten minutes long.

Some other song I listened to by them had similar problems. It does things I like, but doesn't manage to hold my attention for the full ten minutes--not that there aren't long songs that I like, but these aren't them. But they are interesting enough that I'll probably go back occasionally and flip through songs at random; feels like they should have at least one song that I absolutely love, but I haven't found it yet.

Rishloo

Hey, one of the bands nominated on the actual ranking! I was actually really hyped up to listen to more of them--a unique musical experience that reminded me of Mega Man 8's soundtrack on acid? That's exactly what I want to be listening to right now!

Then I clicked a song and realized I was confusing this band's name with Sphongle. Also that Sphongle song only got 116th Place in the ranking? Probably way too low there; not absolute top tier, but I figured it'd be around the top 50.

So, Rishloo, Rishloo... let me dig up what I had to say about them at the ranking:

====================================================

83:

Song Name: Just a Ride
Song Origin: Rishloo
Song Link:

Nominator: NBIceman (10/15)

If this is considered to be the easiest Rishloo song to understand, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to ever click anything else by them.

[FINAL NOTES: I'm unsure if those saying the song is easy to understand are just making a joke, trolling, or operating on a higher level of consciousness than I am. Possibly all of the above.]

====================================================

Well it got into the top half, which is oddly more than could be said for Sphongle (that's not to say that Just a Ride shouldn't have been up there, more just confusion as to how the other song wasn't. Though I haven't listened to Sphongle since the ranking, so I may just be remembering it as better than it was? I'll listen to it again later.)..

The other two songs picked by Spotify were "Scissorlips" and "Feathergun In The Garden Of The Sun".

I think I like Just a Ride more than either of the other two. I'll admit there's a chance it gets a boost by being more familiar than the other two songs, but then I just like the lyrics and vocals so much more on Just a Ride. "And I've been to nothingness and barely bothered to survive" and "Splitting the line between two sides, but I am neither one" are just better lines than the other songs gave.

...also relistening to Just a Ride makes me think that song might have been a bit too low itself, but that's neither here nor there, I suppose...

Scissorlips is kinda interesting in contrast by being harsher, giving a bit more depth to the band. Feathergun...uhh...

"I spy walrus tooth in the way outside of the shoegaze revolution"

...honestly I kinda tuned out at that point. It was like, "I am never going to understand this song in the least and I would rather try a different song by this band, but I'm out of time so I'll just listen to this anyway, and I guess it's alright but definitely the weakest of the three".

Glad to see you sought out some more Kindo, although I agree that nothing else on that album comes close to touching Moments in Between.

If you still want some more of them, though, the songs that round out my top 3 for the band are October's Storm and Feeling in the Night, both of which should be on Youtube.

Edit: Check that, the studio version of October's Storm isn't on YT. Here it is.

Will listen to those Kindo songs later, thank you.

Don't think I'm a fan, sorry to say. The three songs listed as Most Popular (going from #3 to #1)

Lucidity, I found kinda boring. The song's just so slow and sleepy that I have a hard time even focusing on it.

Rival was alright. A marked improvement over Lucidity, though it didn't leave much of an impression.

Sectarian had so much promise. When the song opened with the line "Eradicate all life", I was incredibly hyped up for something--something awesome, or villainous, or dark, and...well it was a good song, but it never reached the lofty heights I hoped it would. Probably gets a bit of a boost because an interview implies this is an anti-religion song, as I was rather hoping for a few of those to balance the more Christian songs around.

Acid Bath

A band that can't be found on Spotify or YouTube, 'ey? That's rough. It's especially annoying because there's a chance I might like them? "Scream of the Butterfly" was surprisingly enjoyable for something so overwhelmingly dark. One of those songs that I should hate, but don't.

...of course there's only a rather low quality recording of a recording, so who knows? Perhaps they are as good as Alice in Chains, if not better, and I would enjoy more of their work? Perhaps I'm over hyping them because they're so forbidden--a band that I will never truly hear, the low-quality of the recording only enhancing the forbidden mystique?

Only other song I listened to was "Dr. Seuss Is Dead" which had a somewhat decent live video uploaded... didn't care for that one. Louder and harsher, it didn't work for me I think I appreciated the chance to listen to it though.

Comments on Rishloo later .

But it's a shame that the Beach Boys are so fractured and their entire story basically from birth is actually a really sad one. They literally tour at the moment as two separate groups.

Huh. I actually don't know too much about the band themselves, like I said, I never really thought about them. Kinda sad to hear that.

No depth, no hidden meaning, just an old boating tune.

Actually, Brian altered and added lyrics to the old folk song to play into the story Pet Sounds (as a whole) tells.

I know one of the lines was changed, though I couldn't find anyone entirely sure if there was any reason the line switched to "this is the worst trip I've ever been on". SECRET DRUG REFERENCE, PERHAPS? But then it's not like any of the rest of the song lends itself to that interpretation, which seemed to just leave people confused in the short amount of research I did.

...I may try looking into that album some day. I've seen its name pop up before, supposed to be this big influential thing and what not...

To speed up the ARTISTS section, I decided to throw some artist names into Spotify and listen to the first three suggested tracks. Not the best way to get the full experience of an artist, granted, but it's a chance to see what songs are actually being listened to and get a vague grasp of who the artist is.

The Mars Volta

...No.

"Cerpin sees giant dogs, and can hear their voices as they lead him somewhere. Above Cerpin is a surgeon, whose name is Dr. Wolfram Tarant. The Doctor has Dogs for arms."

.....No.

"Cerpin is now in the Eriatarka house of facial and muscular corrections. Cerpin starts to become angry at the Doctor, but before he can get out of control, the Doctor shows him his new form. Cerpin now has wings, his new form is called Moatilliatta - The last of the great Teraquetzals (Tera and Quetzal are both names for certain flying dinorsaurs, Pterodactyl and Quetzalcoatl)."

....

"The album is based on a book that Cedric Bixler-Zavala wrote about his friend Julio represented by the character Cerpin Taxt in the book. He was a drug addict, had an overdose, and went into a coma. When he got out of the coma he killed himself."

.......I'm just...just gonna go over here and not listen to this band any further now, thank you.

And how is every band on the planet supposed to be similar to THIS?!?

Spock's Beard

This band, on the other hand, is one that I actively want to hear more of! I actually wound up listening to all five of the songs listed as "popular" and actually don't have anything negative to say about any of them. Even a song like "What Becomes of Me" that reads like a suicide note is enjoyable because it seems like the band is great enough to get away with anything.

Not sure where to start listening to other songs by them, but I'll definitely get around to listening to more, eventually.

Oi Va Voi

Question: How did this band wind up on ZA'LIST to begin with? I don't dislike what I've heard of them, but they don't sound like any of the songs that were nominated, so I can't recall how their name would have even came up.

*checks*

Ah, their name came up in Thank You Scientist's comments. Their song was compared to this band, and Snarky Puppy, and The Mars Volta. I have no idea how any of those four bands can be compared to any of the others, but that's YouTube comments for you.

Band's alright; the songs feel a bit too slow and traditional for my tastes, but I have no qualms with the singer, the band, the lyrics, or anything really.

Moving along to the newly posted song:

Soft Machine - Hope For Happiness

Huh. This band kinda reminds me of "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band", oddly enough.

...well not that oddly, since I only heard of that band a couple days ago. With the aforementioned Classic Rock Station getting lots of play, I'm finding things that are new to me and "The Man in the Jar" was so bizarre that it left an impression.

Not entirely sure what kind of impression, honestly. It's weird. I obviously don't dislike it; I cared enough to track down the band, the name of the song, listened to it multiple times... but I don't know if I'd go so far as to say I like it? I haven't decided.

This song is kinda like that.

Sloop John B: Well, that was one heck of a nostalgia bomb! I heard this song (and most of the rest of the Beach Boys' greatest hits) so many times on the oldies station, but I don't think they've played it in a long time... feels like it has been years since the last time I heard it. Or most of their songs, honestly; they don't play too much from the 60s these days, so Kokomo is the only one I know is still getting a lot of airtime.

I've never been too big a fan of the band--never tried to avoid their music, but I've also never sought it out either. They were always there with so many big songs, then eventually they just kinda...weren't? Never really thought about them or the sudden lack of their songs playing on a seemingly endless loop. Might try listening to a Greatest Hits collection later... feel like I could go for Good Vibrations or Little Deuce Coupe at the moment.

"Sloop John B"'s not a bad song. The chorus is a bit too repetitive for my tastes, but it is infectiously catchy... I've had it stuck in my head for hours now. This is also the first time I've ever really paid attention to the lyrics and apparently I've had some very, very wrong interpretations about it. I thought it was an anti-war song, or at least anti-military. The chorus' repeated refrain of

Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, let me go home
Why don't you let me go home

I thought that was someone begging to be released from military service. Then you look at everything other than the chorus and...uhh...nothing even remotely points toward that being a valid reading of the song? And it's actually an old folk song from 1916? No depth, no hidden meaning, just an old boating tune. Nothing wrong with that, but where did I get the idea that the song was anything else?

A quick Google search offers a plausible explanation: "In the movie Forrest Gump, this plays when Forrest is in Vietnam, and the camera shows the latrines. The lines, "This is the worst trip I've ever been on... I wanna go home" are emphasized."

I have no specific memories of the film, though I did see it once. Is it possible that scene implanted the "this song is about Vietnam" thought in my mind and I just never questioned it, even after I couldn't remember anything about the scene itself? Probably. The timing seems about right.

The song also inspired a lot of really weird memories. Something about the higher pitched way the band sings the word "home" was giving me a vision of singing dogs... it was quite disorienting and took me a while to follow those memories.

The 80s Pound Puppies intro! Something about the way the dogs and the Beach Boys sing the word "home" seemed similar to me, or at least brought up memories of each other. Hadn't thought about 80s Pound Puppies in quite a few years either--I loved that show when I was really little, but that thing really did not hold up, at all. Tried watching an episode or two after I was grown up, but they were almost painful to sit through.

((I rather liked The Hub's updated Pound Puppies cartoon that came out around the same time the current MLP series started--at least, the first season of it, since it had a drop in quality afterwards--but that was short-lived and not terribly relavant to anything.))

Inexplicably, the last time I remember watching the 80s cartoon when I was an appropriate age, was renting an old VHS of the show at same place that rented the Fist of the North Star Game Boy fighting game. Which is weird and kinda uncomfortable.

...well either way, the song I'm supposed to be talking about is alright. Not sure how I feel about all these unrelated flashbacks being triggered by the song, but it was certainly an experience.

If anyone wants to suggest specific songs or albums, they may wish to do so soon; I'm probably taking a short break after Smash bros. comes out. Not sure I'll bother much with the online, but World of Light and Classic should be amusing for a few days.

Decided to listen to the album that Reign of Kindo song came from tonight. Not a bad album, though I didn't find any of the other songs to be half as good as the nominated one (The Moments In Between).

"Till We Make Our Ascent" probably came closest, I think I'd pick that as second best from the album. I got a laugh out of Breathe Again which may be the first dark Christmas song I've ever heard--don't take that as a request for more as I doubt they invented the concept, it was just unexpected.

new name for the european VGM composers list: charles deenen.

Not bad! I tried flipping through a lot of songs credited to him and I'd say his two best were easily from the SNES Lord of the Rings game. The title theme is the obvious choice for best song (and I wouldn't disagree with that), but Hobbiton Theme isn't far behind:

The chirping bird effects are really impressive for a 16-bit game. I'll also give a special shout-out to the first minute of Mantalos:

That is great; I'm less interested in the song once it gets going, but it has one of the strongest opening sequences of any VGM I've ever heard. And while it's not really one of his songs, he is credited as a Producer on a few Virtual Pool tracks, like "Lose My Way":

Not his work at all (Written and composed by Ronald Valdez, sung by Stacy Darin), but it did come up while I was searching his name. Not at all the type of song I was expecting to find, but I like it. Remind me to nominate that one and that Game Boy Terminator song the next time a VGM ranking topic asks for nominations.

Also, something kinda funny: I've been listening to the Classic Rock station a lot more often lately (it's the only station I listen to that still isn't playing any Christmas music) and they actually played Thunder Road today! That was fun.

Slowly working my way through the assorted artists list... it's harder to keep focus without any specific songs or albums, but I'm listening to some things. Went with Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise album today... or at least the first two or three songs on it.

Not to diminish his talents, and I still highly enjoy Futile Devices and The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out to Get Us (I only had Futile Devices in 42nd place? Should be higher than that...), but I really do not like listening to a bunch of his songs in succession.

Great artist, very talented, very complicated work, but I find a little of him goes a long way. I'll...try to look into his other more popular songs in the future, but no more than one song per day at most, any more than that is just too much for me.

Wanted more music like bunbleman, so I went back to that "eerik inpuj sound" page at bandcamp and clicked the first album that interested me to see what I'd wind up with: What you hear is what you deserve by kaneel.

Good album. Think I'm going to give best song on the album to "Aspiration":

https://kaneel.bandcamp.com/track/aspiration

...I don't know why, honestly. Listened to it three times tonight, so I can safely say I like it? So long as there are absolutely no follow up questions or expectations of explanations.

The palm of a tiny hand: Well, I almost cried just looking at the image. Some number of years ago, I watched some random anime on the Anime Network. The only ones that I actually remember any specific details about were Revolutionary Girl Utena and Clannad After Story.

((I also recall watching some of Aria, but can't remember much other than gondolas and Zun Taka Po...something-something Zun! Also something called Alice Academy which I don't recall anything beyond the title? Haven't thought of that one for an eternity. Wonder if it was worth remembering? Probably not.))

Right, right, so Clannad. I'm not sure if I even knew it was a Visual Novel at the time and had no real idea what it was; I figured with the name "After Story" it had to be a sequel or epilogue, but jumped in with it anyway. It was free with the cable subscription (yes, I know that's not exactly "free", but let's not get into linguistic semantics) and I was bored, so why not?

...if I'd known what I was in for, I probably wouldn't have clicked it. That being said, I couldn't stop watching it and ultimately enjoyed the experience... just... really wasn't prepared for certain things. </.<

Rankings:

Clannad and Sonic are obviously the top two from this batch; I think I'm actually going to give Clannad first place tonight. A combination of being in the mood for that sort of song and the unexpected memories of that anime give it an edge over Sonic music...at this exact moment, anyway.

Keep Alive can be in third.

...harder to say after that. Leaning towards "Time Bomb > Lightning > Dedication > Battle Cry"? All good songs and I feel I could flip those into any order and be happy with the placement.

Battle Cry: I didn't know what to expect from new Hanson music and I was rather worried with the credits listing multiple symphony orchestras, but this is actually good? Surprisingly so. I just can't decide if the song is overly religious or if I'm reading too far into it:

And every time you fall face down in the dirt
I never will be far
Don't be afraid

...

I've got a battle cry, so you can follow me
Even in darkness I'll never leave your side

Those lines in particular remind me of other Jesus related things; not that that's exactly a bad thing, I gave really high marks to Gethsemane, I'm just not sure I'm reading these things correctly.

Seven Rings in Hand (Fairytales in Trance): I'm pretty sure I mentioned my love for the vocal Sonic songs at least once at the last topic, so this feels a bit like cheating... going to try The Protomen and The Chipettes next? </.<

Interestingly enough, I actually hadn't heard this one before. I listen to the original often enough, but I guess I've never paid enough attention to The Black Knight's soundtrack to find this version of it... this is a truly wondrous find and I can't thank you enough for it.

Unfortunately, the reaction I have to it and the memories it conjures up, makes it rather difficult to fairly judge any song after it--it's why I had to take a day off and then listen to all the other songs again without this one so completely overshadowing them. In a sense, it's like "Graves" by Caligula's Horse--I truly enjoy it, but I need a little break from music after the experience.

A Dedication to...Everyone: I'm not sure I've even heard of Fragile Dreams before, but the song is quite nice. Game seems interesting enough, but from the reviews I've read, I doubt I'd be a fan? Dunno, haven't really looked up that much about it.

Keep Alive: Between this and "Blue Skies (Infinity Remix)", I'm starting to think I may just like Ace Combat music.

Lightning Flame Dragon Roaring: Celtic Metal, 'ey? I should look into that later. I hear good things about "Antti Martikainen " (which is to say that name popped up in the comment that said this song was Celtic Metal), so I may try searching for a song related to that tomorrow.

Time Bomb: Never heard of this wrestler (again, my knowledge of non-WWE/WCW wrestlers is extremely limited), but all the comments about him make him sound amazing.

...though possibly too self-destructive...

Song is neat! Far more chaotic than anything else in this batch, which helps it stand out.

i love this track, have you heard it? it samples a VGM track so that aspect should be interesting, at least!

(yes, this IS a vektroid tune. macintosh plus is just one of her many aliases. [aphex twin and venetian snares also use a lot of aliases. apparently this is just a thing artists who make some kind of electronic or sample-based music do for some reason.] edit: oh, seems like you already knew this since you mentioned her macintosh plus alias in the previous topic.)

Indeed I did! It was actually one of the Mac songs that sparked the interest, specifically the first track:

No idea how I got there--I was listening to Guile's theme and I could almost swear autoplay started playing this song immediately afterwards, but I can't find anyway the algorithm could possibly have done that... maybe it was just under the suggested videos and I clicked it, then got so confused by the song that I completely forgot how I got there? Or maybe AutoPlay does really weird things at times, I don't know which explanation is most likely anymore.

Either way, that song was weird. Everything about it. The weird artist name, the Japanese song titles, the album art, how it starts off as relaxing background music and then transitions into this warped sample of a song I still haven't heard. And having wound up there from Guile's Theme? It felt like the universe broke.

Blah blah blah, time passed, and I had only the vaguest recollection of the song--I just knew that there was some weird, trippy, experimental, genre-shifting mass of chaos that I'd been eagerly anticipating hearing more of for quite a while... and the album just couldn't live up to those expectations. Not much could, truly.

Linked song is good. I didn't recognize it as being from a game (it certainly sounded game like, but I never spent much time with Turok or its soundtrack to recognize it as being from anything specific) and that does make make it a bit more interesting. I wouldn't mind hearing more of her work or Vaporwave in general.

Unfortunately this is the last opportunity the band had to impress me as I only had 3 nominations to go on. I'd definitely be interested in hearing anything else from them if you consider anything to be better than this Raetsel but if this is your favorite then we might be a long shot from the same page on these guys.

Four actually and I'm afraid if you don't like any of them, then there's not many other songs by them that I could try. I tried one with a more mainstream Bruce Spingsteen-esque sound (Breaking Out), one of their heavier/louder songs (This City Made Us), one that leans heavily on the references to Mega Man characters (The Stand), and one of the few with the female singer taking lead for a change of pace (Hold Back The Night).

If you hadn't banned covers, I almost definitely would have nominated their cover of "In the Air Tonight":

Kinda doubt you'd be a fan, but I absolutely love the song when it gets really going at around the five minute mark. I still enjoy the Phil Collins version, but it feels...lacking after I've gotten used to this version of the song.

Link includes a brief intro to the song ("Last Stop") that helps set the mood--not really needed, but I think the song's a bit better with it.

Beyond that, I'd just say our music tastes don't really line up often. Really we've kinda known that for a while now. </.<

Ring! Dong! Dang!: Infectiously catchy, though I'm not sure it really fits Smash Bros--I'll probably use it anyway, but that's more evidence of why I should never have control over the song selection than a ringing endorsement.

Couldn't quickly find a translation of the song. Google Translate on the lyrics resulted in lines such as: "Do not stab my future umbrella, try a rainbow". So that was fun.

SLOW DOWN: Nice enough, but it doesn't excite me or inspire much in the way of commentary. I've also never heard of Terrace House before--show sounds nice enough, though I have no particular interest in watching strangers living together, so it's probably not really my thing.

Go Down Gamblin': I prefer "Spinning Wheel" personally. Not entirely sure if I've heard this one or not--it feels familiar, but Wheel played so often on the oft-mentioned oldies station that I may just be distracted by how familiar the singer is.

Victory Dance: Not really a Kirby fan. I enjoyed Super Star, but perhaps unfortunately, that was the first Kirby game I ever played--when none of his other games came even remotely close to comparing to it, I rather dismissed the character out of hand. I'm sure the rest of the series is perfectly fine, just going from "one of the best Super Nintendo games of all time" to "fine" made everything else feel worse than it probably was.

Also I'm still disappointed that you have to start with Kirby in World of Light, so now's probably not the best time to ask about the character. Try again after I have the game and unlocked some characters I want to use. (In no particular order: Simon, Isabelle, Corrin, Wolf, Pichu, and Pokemon Trainer because I've missed Squirtle and Ivysaur. Would have preferred them being split into unique characters, but they're at least back so I can't complain too much.)

Skeleton Warriors Theme: First reaction--Skeleton Warriors was a cartoon?? I've never played it, but I've spent enough time browsing the Saturn's library that I instantly recognized the name. That was surprising and makes me mildly curious about the game.

Second reaction--this is so ridiculously cheesy that I loved every second of it. A magical prince fighting an army of skeletons on speeder bikes? The show's logo exploding for absolutely no reason? This might be the most ludicrously 90s intro ever.

In the Air Tonight (In This Moment): Funny enough, I was considering posting a different cover of this song over in Se7en's topic today... not that I think he'd like it, but The Protomen's cover is the only other song by them that I could possibly suggest.

This song isn't bad, but since I prefer The Protomen's cover and the Phil Collins original, I don't have any room in any of my playlists for it.

Skeleton Warriors >>>> Ring Dong Dang > Go Down Gamblin' > SLOW DOWN > Victory Dance > In the Air Tonight.

Maybe flip the last two depending on mood.

Also made time to listen to Commissions I and Commissions II. They were enjoyable! I'd have to go back and listen to them to have much in the way of comments (trying to type from memory is not ideal), but I have general positive feelings for most of them.

I'm disappointed that half of the Bullet Hell tracks are not available. What we have is good, but the fact that the numbering scheme goes out of its way to tell you that you're never going to hear all of them (why couldn't the songs on the EP be 1 and 2? Did you really have to use 1 and 3, just to rub it in?) feels disappointing.

Suite from Magnetic Rose was the low point... nineteen minutes long and not as immediately gripping as most of his other work that I've heard, it felt unending.

Don't have rankings for the tracks, but I think I'd take everything except Suite over everything else I've listened to the past two days.

Rosetta Stoned was certainly a unique way to start the holiday. It's technically impressive, but I prefer Lateralus by quite a bit--almost fifteen minutes of listening to someone ramble incoherently in an overly vulgar song about how a bad acid trip made them crap themselves...that's not exactly something I'm going to listen to voluntarily, sorry to say.

I see a lot of love for the track. If you try Googling it one of the first hits is going to be a rather long article about how it is the greatest song of all time, though I don't really get it. Part of it is that I don't know enough about music to actually recognize time signatures or anything, so all the talk about how overwhelmingly complex the song and its signatures are goes over my head. I can generally recognize it as sounding like it would be highly difficult to perform, but that's about it.

Think in comparison to the other songs posted last night, I'd probably slot it between Iron Chef & Twinkle Twinkle. Possible I might put it over Chef if I listened to both of them a few more times, since it's more unique and stands out more.

"Asking Akitaka (Bus Stop)". I'm not a fan right now, but it's possible that I could come around on it giving enough time. When I strongly dislike something, there's always a chance that my opinion on it will do a 180 after enough exposure to it... like that Garfield Season 7 theme. I mashed up that song with everything on rave.dj when I was addicted to that site. That song, Partus Animae, Heathcliif's theme, and Garfield Amiga's music were my go-to picks.

Garfield Season 7 & Knight Rider almost worked together. "Knight Rider - A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist. He's my main cat, Garfield!" ...sadly the rest of the mash-up didn't sync together and it wasn't worth posting, but for a brief moment, it really looked like it would.

...what were we talking about?

"The Bus Is Late (Waiting For The Bus In The Rain)"--oh good. The comments on the last song kept talking about this song and I was worried I'd have to try looking it up at some point, but it's here now, so that's a time-saver.

It's more interesting than I expected. The background music sounds 8-bit, which keeps my attention, in spite of the repetitive lyrics. I've also been mildly curious about Night Vale for a while (not enough to ever actually listen to anything, but enough that I'm aware it exists)... this song is not what I expected from what little I knew about Night Vale. Not that I knew much: Something something, Podcast. Something something, Twin Peaks comparison.

Bus is Late > Vortex Infinitum > Iron Chef > Twinkle, Twinkle > Bus Stop > Crash and Burn.

...had Bus Stop in last, but moved it up. Tempted to put it over Twinkle, Twinkle, but...nah, I'll leave it there tonight.

Funnily enough your vid is blocked for me, but the lyrics are the same so it's fine

As soon as I posted that, I had a feeling that would wind up being the case... but for some reason I decided I was probably just being paranoid and didn't even bother checking. Sorry about that; but if the lyrics are the same, then it should be the right song, so it all worked out.

And thanks for the bump, I actually did forget about this earlier. Whoops.

[One long song]

I highly look forward to listening to that tomorrow. One in the morning seems a bit late to jump into a fifteen minute long Tool song.

...also happy thanksgiving to those of you who celebrate it and pleasant random Thursday in November to everyone else!

CPU songs

"Twinkle, Twinkle": Never sure how to react to spoo~ky covers of children's songs. I can't think of any that I particularly liked or disliked, or any that I was particularly creep-ed out by. Song is alright, I guess? Unsure if I would rank it higher or lower than "Mr. Spock's Twinkle Twinkle Little Earth":

...alright so I would definitely rank it higher than Leonard Nimoy rambling for two straight minutes about "what if we replace the word 'star' with the word 'Earth' in every song" in character as Spock. Probably. I just wanted an excuse to post a Leonard Nimoy song.

"Crash and Burn"... technically good, but I'm not personally a fan.

"Vortex Infinitum"... as soon as I saw "Robo-Ky's theme", I started preparing myself for the ordeal. Sure, I appreciate what they were going for, giving him a distorted and broken version of Ky's theme, but it's not a particular enjoyable listen...

...and then it turns out this song isn't "Holy Orders?" in the least. It's quite good! I think. I mean, it didn't have to do a lot to exceed my expectations, so I could be overvaluing it just because it isn't Holy Orders? but... eh, it's late and I enjoyed listening to it, let's just leave it there.

"Iron Chef Japan - Main Theme": Good. It helps that I like Iron Chef. I was mesmerized from the moment I first learned about it...you see, I played a lot of Star Ocean 2--like a lot, a lot. Like...I think my number of complete playthroughs of that game is in the double digits. And late in that game, there's a Cooking Contest which is blatantly a parody of Iron Chef.

Of course, at the time, I had never heard of Iron Chef and didn't know what it was. As soon as I heard about the show, it was just wonderful--it was as though a part of one of my favorite games had spontaneously became real! I know that's the exact opposite of how things actually happened, but it made the whole series feel fantastic and magical. I've seen a few episodes of the original, Iron Chef America, and even the very short-lived "Iron Chef USA" starring William Shatner.

...why was there a terrible American version starring Shatner as the Chairman? Surely they knew the show doesn't work if the chairman is a recognizable celebrity? A reality show where the host is a fictional character is one thing, but it all falls apart when you recognize who they really are with even a casual glance.

.....why does this post keep looping back to the original Star Trek?

I again thank you for the offer, but I nominated Metal Sonic because I like the character and was happy to see him getting support. I have no requests.

Unfortunately that particular version of the song is blocked in most countries and I don't see a way through... but after doing some searching, I think I found the song itself?

With possibly lyric translation over here:

https://lyricstranslate.com/en/%E4%B8%80%E7%94%9F%E4%BD%95%E6%B1%82-what-more-could-i-ask-life.html

It's pretty! And the lyrics are nice too--well nice probably isn't the right adjective...how do I put it..."the lyrics are well made and pleasing, even if the lyrics themselves are wistful and sad"? Either way, I like it.

Obviously if I found the wrong song, then let me know and I'll try to search some more.

Decided to go with "Songs About My Cats" today--it felt like the next logical step. After that Garfield album and some light praise for Age Of having a song with cat in the title, it really felt like I had to click on this particular album next.

It was good! Not quite as good as "Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding" (I've already gone back to
Li2Co3 multiple times and I'm now willing to call Li2 one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard), but it was a fun trip.

I think I'd give best song on the album to "For Bertha Rand". Probably not much of a surprise; Cat is fairly low on the list of forms that I'd like to take, but I can still appreciate the constant "I am a cat" message--add in some heavily distorted, almost demonic versions of that message and you've got a track that's practically made for me.

On a more unexpected note, I think I pick "Lioness" as second best. There's something about the track that feels like the final screen of an 8-Bit RPG. Like you save the generic princess and this songs starts playing as a generic "now you save princess and story is happy end, thank you from amusement creaters ! ! " message scrolls onto the screen. It's just nice and relaxing, bringing up some pleasant memories.

Also give high marks to "Look", though only being 30 seconds long hurts it somewhat--I'm left wanting more, which isn't exactly bad, but slightly disappointing?
