I remember people freaking out at JonBenet Ramsey when I was 7. Other than that, I remember the Steelers Super Bowl loss in 95, but thats not a nationwide major event in the same sense.

Yeah, if we count Super Bowls, I can remember Super Bowl XVII (and the Dallas/Washington playoff game before it), which would have been when I was 5. But I wouldn't think that applies for the question being asked.

I remember watching the Challenger blow up. I would have been 8 (almost 9) at the time.

I remember things before that (like watching Star Wars in a movie theater when Return of the Jedi came out when I was 6), but I don't think I was paying any attention to "major events" (ie, news) at all for most of my childhood. I can't really think of anything that happened before that where I would have been aware of it at the time.

ParanoidObsessive

Considering he spent his entire Presidency constantly having roadblocks thrown up by grandstanding political rivals and being torn down by media, it's not as if he could have accomplished much of value regardless of whether or not his intended policies or goals were worthwhile or not (and I'm not even claiming they were).

But that's a level of perspective most people are utterly incapable of these days, because lol orange man bad.

Trump was pretty much doomed from day 1.

Not that any of that matters though. Most of the current problems with the US and the world aren't things that the President has any power over anyway. I'm not sure there's anyone on Earth who could "make America great again" no matter how hard they tried or how much everyone else in Washington was willing to help them. Most socio-economic problems at the moment are complex global scenarios that are nearly impossible to untangle on the national level.

And none of this is helped by the fact that the political system as it currently exists does not incentivize actually solving problems. The job of the politician is to say and do what they need to do in order to get elected/reelected, not to make the actual hard choices that are required to fix things. And voters are incentivized to vote for short-term benefits over long-term solutions that require personal sacrifice, so they will never vote in the best-interests of society as a whole. Especially when the expectation is that the voter-base will be informed and educated, while most actual voters are neither, and vote with their heart far more often than with their head.

So everyone pretty much needs to get used to the idea of a string of successive Presidents where each one leaves the country worse off than when they first took office, because that's the inevitable future.

Shit's fucked, enjoy the ride.

The check-engine light has been on in my car for about a month, now. I'm afraid that something bad is going to happen unless I have it inspected immediately

On modern cars, the check engine light is almost entirely meaningless.

On older cars the engine light wouldn't come on unless your car was about to undergo some sort of catestrophic failure, like you were losing oil and were on the verge of thermo-locking your engine block. It was pretty much a "if this light is on pull over immediately" sort of thing.

But on modern cars the check engine light is tied into the electronics and diagnostics, and can go off for any number of minor bullshit issues. It can generally light for things as mild as "your O2 sensor is slightly out of sync" (which can affect your mileage but isn't really a danger to your car) all the way to something incredibly stupid and meaningless like "you're out of wiper fluid".

If the engine light is the only thing different and you're not noticing any other warnings or alerts, and there doesn't seem to be any obvious change in how your car is running and driving, you're almost certainly fine to wait to get it checked out.

If it's been lit for a month and hasn't broken down yet, you're almost certainly fine waiting another week or so.

I hate this "it's not for you, it's for a new generation of fans" excuse that creators put out.

I'd be willing to accept it (even if I still resented them for it), if not for the fact that it's not even for a new generation of fans. It's for literally no one other than the people who made it. It's narcissistic masturbation.

When adaptations are being made by people who hate the original source material and/or refuse to even read it, how can they produce anything other than crap? If their original ideas were actually worthwhile, they wouldn't be working on adaptations, they'd be creating their own original properties and franchises.

still like them better than disney.

I'd agree with all of this.

But I'd also like to include Amazon and Apple TV in that list of shame, because of the corpse-raping they did to Wheel of Time, Rings of Power, and Foundation.

I'm not even sure why major studios bother adapting existing properties (especially from books) at all at this point, because they never seem to want to do anything that ever actually appeals to fans. While non-fans will never become fans because they don't care about the IP in the first place, and aren't likely to bother trying it when the only feedback they hear is fans shouting about how shit it all is.

The whole point of adapting something that's already popular is to keep all the aspects that made it popular in the first place but signal boost them to a new audience. But shit writers with unearned egos think they know better than the people who already succeeded, and try to force their own conflicting vision onto things until all they're left with is a stupid boring mess.

The one thing that all pokemon have in common is being able to shrink down and fit in pokeballs, humans can't, so humans are just regular monsters.

That's not a function of the Pokemon, though. That's a function of the Pokeballs.

In theory, you could capture humans in Pokeballs. All they're really doing is digitizing a life-form that can be stored as computer data (sort of like how Flynn gets zapped in Tron). And the anime has shown other things being captured (like inanimate objects), so there's nothing inherent in Pokemon themselves that is a necessary part of the process.

The implication is that Pokeballs are probably designed with safeguards to prevent targeting humans specifically, for obvious reasons. But you could probably design/create one that could (though it would likely be extremely illegal in-universe).

But also, we're talking about a franchise made for children. I've probably put more thought into the concept in this post alone than anyone actually working on the game did, because they didn't really care.

i dunno why but i always pictured PO as a tall silent bob.

..not so fat tho.

This isn't entirely inaccurate.

Might have been even more accurate in college, when I wore a trenchcoat most of the time. Though I never wore hats. Still don't. Always hated hats. And I wasn't a stoner. But I usually had a close trimmed beard or goatee 99% of the time (still do).

And I was never really fat like he was, or had anything close to his build. In high school I was borderline gangly, and by college I was pretty athletic (running track, playing soccer, hockey, and volleyball from time-to-time). I've put on weight since then, but I'm not morbidly obese, I've just sort of got old man dad bod. Which kind of makes sense, all things considered. My build was probably closer to Jay's most of the time.

I also used to get "Oh, your sense of humor is just like Kevin Smith's, tee hee!" a lot when I first started hanging out online. But I mostly attribute that to the fact that he's got a very basic sarcastic New Jersey style sense of humor, and he grew up about 25 miles south of me and about 6 years before me. So there's a lot of cultural overlap in how we both see the world (or at least there used to be).

Though whenever anyone ever said "Hey, what celebrity do you most look like?", I'd always say this:

https://youtu.be/maEkyzX9oKE?t=2296

...even though I look slightly younger than he does. Even though he was almost the exact age in that (49) that I am now (47). I've got less grey hair and fewer wrinkles, anyway.

Hope that doesn't mean I'm going to get my head cut off by a Scotsman in a couple years, that would suck.

Speaking of middle/high school: There was this guy I used to go to school with who was mostly quiet, until you talked to him about subjects that interested him, then he would go on these long winded, rambling rants. He was tall, glasses, always wore a Tool shirt (probably owned like 20 or 30 of him)

This isn't entirely far off from me in high school, either - though I was never into Tool. You'd be far more likely to see me wearing a Far Side shirt. Or something like one of these:

https://www.shirtminister.com/shop-images/you-are-here-milkyway/you-are-here-milkyway-t-shirt-schwarz-1.jpg

But most of the time I was just wearing plain black t-shirts or even black turtlenecks (depending on the weather), and usually had a jacket on over it. Which was either my varsity jacket, a black trenchcoat, or a black dress coat sort of like this one:

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51XYJ8qCl-L._SL1024_.jpg

Still have all of those jackets, actually. I'm terrible at getting rid of old clothes (though I've been trying to purge a lot of stuff recently).

despite the fact that he was way smarter than anyone else in school, he pretty much spent all of his teens and 20's in college. In fact even though he was 2 or 3 years older than me, he was still in some of my college classes because he just wanted to take the same classes over and over again to prove how smart he was.

This was never me, though.

I mostly half-assed my way through school. I coasted through high school, and in college I skipped classes all the time and mostly just wanted to get the hell out as quickly as possible. I really only took the classes I needed for my major, and then did the bare minimum to pass unless it was a class that specifically appealed to me (like my core major classes or my comp sci minor classes).

I never really cared if people thought I was smart as opposed to actually being smart. When I get lecture-y about stuff, it's less because I'm trying to convey "Look how much I know about stuff!" as much as because I've got a tendency towards pedagoguery because I like trying to make everyone else smarter. No matter how often they try and fight against me. Grrr!

I said this years ago, and it still sort of holds true (though less so now, because I'm more tired and jaded now) - on some level I basically just want to kind of incept knowledge into people. And then, after I'm dead and gone, there'll be dozens of people wandering around in the world who know stuff solely because I'm the one who shoved those facts into their brain.

But mostly I just like knowing things. I like reading about history and science and culture and generally learning stuff I didn't know before. I just find it satisfying.

when I was in 3rd grade someone bullied me so I threw a desk at him when he was going down some stairs

he died, but I didn't get jail so that's cool.

...that's a fake story, peeps

In 5th grade I broke my collar bone, and some assholes were giving me shit, and kind of bump-checked me in the shoulder because they thought it was funny (and hey, what's the kid with the broken shoulder going to do, right?). The pain was so bad it shot me full of adrenaline, at which point I picked up a chair one-handed with my good arm and threatened to beat them to death with it. At which point they backed off really quick and I never really had a problem with them again.

In middle school I occasionally got picked on by a kid who was a grade or two ahead of me when we were on the bus. Usually I'd just ignore it because I wasn't really a confrontational person back then, but then one day he was harassing me a bit when I had a massive sinus headache and I just had throbbing head pain. So my patience was pretty much zero.

So when he started his shit, I basically turned to him and growled at him that if he didn't leave me the fuck alone in the next 10 seconds, I was going to jam both my thumbs into his eye sockets, and then repeatedly smash his head into the ground until his skull cracked open and brains started leaking out. Then I just turned away from him to face the bus window and started silently mouthing counting to 10.

He blustered a bit for the first few seconds, then tried to brush it off like he just bored with picking on me, and kind of turned away and just sort of pretended like he'd forgotten I was even there, but I'm pretty sure I'd scared him shitless, because he never spoke to me again after that.

I've been told by multiple people that I look kind of psychotic when I'm angry. That plus being 6'3" in middle school went a lot way to end bullying whenever I stood up to someone who was giving me shit. No one was ever entirely sure I wasn't just going to kill them or something.

Whigs are but a Republican precursor when the core of their identity was to be anti Andrew Jackson, rather than just anti Democrat in general such as when the GOP formed in the 1850s

Not exactly. If anything, they're sort of a cross between the two current parties. And it was less that they were "anti-Jackson", more that the party was already splitting along ideological lines and Jackson became the figurehead of one half, while the other half basically jumped ship and joined with what was left of the Federalists to form an opposing bloc. So it became easy to rally dissent by focusing on Jackson as the face of the opposition.

The Whigs were strongly in favor of federal power and development, while the Democrats of the era were strongly non-interventionist (to the point where FDR's New Deal would have been far more likely to be a Whig proposal than a Democrat one based on the ideology of the two parties in the 1800s). Things like social nets, financial support, and public works projects would have fallen more under the Whig ambit than the Democrat one. The Whigs also supported higher education pretty strongly. And they were generally anti-war and anti-imperialist. If anything, you could argue that they fused the economic drive of modern Republicans with the sense of social responsibility of modern Democrats - in some ways, you could almost describe them as anti-libertarians.

In a lot of ways, the Whigs were sort of what a lot of people today wish the Republicans were.

And when they broke up, just as many of them drifted into the Democrats as Republicans - it was mostly the northern Whigs who helped form the Republican Party, but most of the southern Whigs wound up joining the Democrats after the war (and were mostly anti-secessionist and a significant opposition party during the war). There really isn't a clear line from Whig to Republican any more than there's a clean lineage from Federalist to Whig.

It doesn't really help that neither current party really represents the claimed ideologies they used to anyway. The Democrats of the 20th and 21st centuries are significantly different from the Democrats of the 19th century (in the same way that one could argue that the Republicans of the 1800s are significantly different from the Republicans of most of the 1900s, who in turn are both different from the Republicans of today since the 1980s or so). Both parties have pulled significant 180 turns on various policy issues or ideological stances (like the Lincoln-era Republicans being radically in favor of equality versus the strongly pro-slavery southern Democrats during the Civil War era, contrasted with the strong push towards civil rights issues from the Democrats that was mostly led by LBJ, which has led most people today to see the Democrats as the "pro-minority" party).

Parties evolve. Parties betray their established ideals all the time (or more charitably "evolve" with the times). And the two-party system as a whole tends to force them into ideological extremes where every issue is simplified into an either/or binary choice in spite of the fact that the world almost never works that way, and that type of thinking almost always does far more harm than good.

But hey, one team can say "Other team bad!" and get re-elected (and get paid!), so apparently the system is working as intended!

Libertarians are a GOP-lite for non-MAGA Republicans who want to evade all social responsibility and call socially contracted things like taxes theft.

If anything, the Libertarian Party in the US is mostly for people who want to get high. Or for people who are already high and believe at least 2-3 conspiracy theories. Possibly including the assumption that everyone in Washington DC is either a lizard person or an agent of a vast Jewish/Zionist cabal.

Most actual libertarians and An-Caps I've know refuse to vote for Libertarian candidates, because they don't see them as representing their actual ideals or philosophy.

It's the irony of the US political system - the Conservatives aren't conservative, the Liberals aren't liberal, and the Libertarians aren't libertarian.

Also, the Green Party doesn't include a single green person (that I know of).

These days, about the only candidate I'm willing to vote for is this one:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_for_President

Though if I had to pick a party from the list, Bull Moose is about the only one I can stand.

I might be willing to go with the Whigs (because the best US President ever was a member of that party), but there are still lunatic fringe offshoots of it still floating around in the US (and there's a revival party in the UK that started over the last decade or so), so I can't side with them because they technically still exist.

It's a fair guess since even one hit vaporizes him

That just means he's a wuss, not that he's dead.

Though if you really want to know, hit him with a revive. Life spells and Phoenix Down insta-kill undead enemies in that game, so if he was a ghost, reviving him would defeat him.

Brian May of Queen has a PhD in astrophysics. His thesis was titled "A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud".

Reminds me of how it always used to blow people's minds that the lead singer of The Offspring had a Masters degree (in Molecular Biology). He's actually upgraded it to a PhD since then.

His thesis was "Discovery of mature microRNA sequences within the protein-coding regions of global HIV-1 genomes: predictions of novel mechanisms for viral infection and pathogenicity". And he's published a paper called "Identification of Human MicroRNA-Like Sequences Embedded within the Protein-Encoding Genes of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus".

When I was in college, Alec Baldwin visited my school and did a lecture on nuclear power plants and teeth - apparently as part of a research organization he's been attached to for decades now (and still is):

Though I've always found it funny that RoboCop has a doctorate in Art History and has taught college-level classes on Ancient History (and worked on various historical documentaries).

That's the point he's making.

It's a flawed point, though.

Using "To Kill A Mockingbird on a projector with the original film" or "War and Peace as a first edition" as examples ignores the fact that the only reason you can watch To Kill a Mockingbird on anything other than the original film reels or read War and Peace in later editions is because they're both continually reprinted or updated as new media evolves. But the same thing happens with games - in precisely the same way you might have a film reel copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, a VHS copy of To Kill a Mockingbird, and a DVD copy of To Kill a Mockingbird (and you need specific and unique hardware to play all of them, and none of them are cross-compatible), a popular game like, say, Halo gets released on the original Xbox, gets an updated port for the 360, gets released as part of the Master Chief Collection, and so on.

Combined with virtual libraries becoming more and more common on both consoles and services like Steam, and tons of past games are still perfectly available to modern players on modern systems even if you don't own the original hardware a game was on. And that's not even taking emulators into account.

Sure, there are games that eventually slip through the cracks, but that's true of every other media as well. For every To Kill a Mockingbird, there are tons of movies that don't get later updated releases (and which most people may have completely forgotten the existence of) - and there's a reason why this page exists:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lost_films

For every War and Peace that gets repeated in dozens of editions across 100+ years, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of books that will show up on bookshelves, disappear, and mostly are never to be seen again. Even many critically acclaimed (at time of release) books by extremely notable authors stop getting reprinted eventually, and modern readers may have no idea they ever existed (even now, this is a huge problem for fans of New Wave sci-fi from the 60s and 70s, which rarely gets reprinted).

We have a skewed view of how well media was preserved in the past because we really only remember the things that were preserved. Most of us have no idea just how many shows, films, or books were published before we were born that have simply vanished and will never be seen again. Or even ones that still exist, but which are relatively difficult for the average layperson to access without using archival means.

Games may have a greater rate of loss, and have unique aspects (like abandonware being a thing), but overall it's not that qualitatively different from any other form of media.

Ah, yes, those evil Vegans were quite the menace.

They're insidious!

...though jokes aside, because Vega's one of the brightest stars in the sky, it tends to crop up in sci-fi a lot. And because it's a simple derivation, multiple stories use Vegan (pronounced Vey-gan rather than Vee-gan) to describe the inhabitants of that system.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Immortal

The term for a hardcore vegetarian was invented a little less than a century ago, but it didn't really start becoming all that popular in its own right until around 40 or so years ago. For most of the 50s, 60s, and 70s sci-fi writers probably wouldn't even have thought about the possible alternative definition (in the same way older stories take a while to start phasing out "gay" as a term for happiness after it became more and more exclusively associated with homosexuality).

Employees are a product like any other, the purchaser (employer) shoulda... squeezed the melons (metaphorically)

Short of putting you to work for a period of time and not paying you for it unless you meet a sufficient standard of work (which is a problem for entirely different reasons), there really isn't a feasible way to actually do that.

Again, "lazy" isn't necessarily something that's obvious until after it's already too late. Unless prior employers are ratting you out because you were stupid/lazy enough to provide them as references in spite of having screwed them over with your laziness.

There's 7 billion people they could have hired and they decided 'meh, the lazy guy' was good enough

You're assuming they possess sufficient psychic powers to automatically know the lazy guy is lazy.

Unless there's a tell-tale giveaway (like former employers listed for references who all complain about how lazy the person was), a potential employer isn't going to have any real way to detect something that intangible (at least not until after you've already been working for awhile). Unless you're literally walking into a job interview and going "Hey, heads up, if you hire me I'm totally going to half-ass any task you give me", they won't know you're going to screw them over until after you've screwed them over.
