ultra ego wasn't gimping his speed like ascended saiyan. it was simpy ultra instinct's counterpart, but from the opposite concept.
if ultra instinct was about defensive reflex, then ultra ego is about offensive agility. calm vs bloodlust.

That's actually really interesting, the goku ultra being defensive and the vegeta one being offensive. Is that reflective of their characters and/or fighting styles?

It has some interesting potential. The transformation (spoiler for what it does) gives a huge power boost, but additional, taking damage in this form also increases its power. So it has a weird double edged sword effect, as taking damage makes Vegeta even more powerful, but it also takes him closer to defeat.

So almost inspired by or bringing back the zenkai boost effect of "taking more hits makes you more powerful" up to a point?

It's only in the manga right now. It's basically Vegeta's version of Ultra Instinct, but based more on power than defense/agility.
