Damn! Thought I may have been going all the way.

No, I had no idea that was one of your go-tos when I threw it in; it just happens to be one of mine as well! DSO took a while to grow on me and they can still be somewhat hit or miss for me at times, but when they land, they really land, and Tap Dancer still feels like their magnum opus even if Karma Bonfire and Exit Strategy of a Wrecking Ball occasionally spend brief periods as my favorite.

I got The Butcher's Ballrom back in the day, really enjoyed it, then proceeded to never get another album by them again. I have no idea why.

This is a good reminder that I should change that.
Sing Along Songs for the Damned and Delirious is a must-listen, I think. I personally say they've gotten a little better with every release, but that second album is still a lot of folks' favorites.

DPR do love their artsy lyrics. They're mostly a concept album band so some of their stuff can seem especially abstract out of context, but it's always interesting to see what people think the first time they hear them.

My entire gaming group loves Mysterium... Except for me.

It's gorgeous, like you said, but I am not what one would consider an abstract thinker and I generally prefer competitive games to cooperative, so it holds precious little appeal to me in terms of actual gameplay. I always sort of enjoy it at the beginning, but by the end I'm just bored. I also kind of feel like the ending is kind of a crapshoot that makes the rest of the game feel almost pointless, but maybe our group is just particularly bad at it.

It's possible my perspective is influenced by the fact that I've been steadily losing interest in wrestling anyway for a while. Dumb stories are less annoying to me because I have lower expectations for wrestling as a whole at this point due to not caring about it as much anymore (and I don't actually follow super closely so I don't end up sitting through every shit segment anyway). Meanwhile things that make it harder to buy into pro wrestling play into my feelings that maybe I just don't like the medium itself. So a bigger wrestling fan is willing to let fundamental stuff like the rules slide because they're still invested in the genre but individual stories piss them off for producing shitty segments, while I'm less bothered by shit segments since I have lower expectations but the fundamental stuff pushes me away from the medium as a whole and I'm not willing to engage in the suspension of disbelief that pro wrestling requires.
That makes sense, yeah.

I think I'd still be inclined to argue that no matter how much something like AEW reffing breaks suspension of disbelief, the Fiend still does it worse, but I do get where you're coming from.

I side more with Panthera here.

I think AEW has the notion that ref bumps and ref distractions are soooo cliche

But they just do the things people do after the ref is down anyway
I don't think that is necessarily siding with Panthera, though.

They're not "ignoring the rules at any time with no warning or explanation." They've pounded it into everyone's heads on commentary that the ref has full discretion.

Again, if the argument is that it's stupid, there is no argument. I think we all agree on that. I just think it stops far short of ruining the principal concept of pro wrestling.

Playing through Pokemon games feels like a chore just to get to the competitive endgame now and it kinda makes me sad, I dunno. They're consistently feeling less like RPG adventures and more like extremely extended tutorials, and the increased focus on having human characters talk at you and having weird plots about legendary Pokemon hasn't really been to my taste.
This is a really good articulation of my feelings on the series. A lot of people who like Sw/Sh talk about how "it's the Pokemon formula - even when it's not great it's still pretty fun," but newer games really don't feel like the Pokemon formula I remember. X/Y simply does not feel the same way HG/SS did and does. For a while I thought that was just nostalgia and that I'd just sort of outgrown my ability to immerse myself in a Pokemon world again, but in the last few years I've even played some excellent ROM hacks, the kind that are made with genuine effort and love for the series, that do recapture that feeling of wanting to see what was around the next corner and not being able to step away from the game for hours. So I've confirmed that it really is the specific GameFreak products of recent times that don't have what I'm looking for and not Pokemon as a whole.

I'm assuming you've played the GameCube Pokemon games? Flawed as they may be, I've always appreciated how they do things so different from other Pokemon adventures, and the good things about them are really good.

Not knowing what's going on sucks, because all you're left with then is this random kid doing odd jobs around town while intermittently having confrontations with characters from CoM. It's frustrating - I hit a wall so quickly where I was like "just get to Sora already for crying out loud."

And then in all subsequent playthroughs when you do know what's going on, those problems still remain, because the rest of the game is so fun that the prologue ends up feeling like even more of a chore than before.

I legit never realized there were people that loved it so much. I know most don't dislike it as much as me, but this amount of praise surprises me.

Lopen posted...
Let me explain why they're the same to start

In both cases you're circumventing a lot of the intended experience by using a game mechanic

One you're outright skipping a difficult part, one you're trivializing a difficult part, or many difficult parts, to the point where you're basically no longer experiencing what that portion of the game has to offer to the player.

Like when a segment of the game exists to challenge you and you are using features not in the original release to trivialize that challenge, what you're doing is removing that aspect of the game. Not unlike passwording through some difficult levels, I think.
When you put it like that, I see why you would regard them as being pretty similar.

To me, though, the difference between jumping straight to the end of the game and using something like savestates is that, in the latter case, you're still doing everything that would normally be involved in a full playthrough of the game. Making it easier on yourself is not the same thing as completely bypassing it.

Heat Man's stage is actually a great example, because you can circumvent the entire disappearing blocks section with Item 2 if you like. That's a tool given to you by the game, the same as a rewind function is. I realize that's not a perfect one-to-one comparison, because as you said, it wasn't in the original release, but trivializing the challenge is a pretty broad term, which is why this whole debate gets so fuzzy. What about something like grinding excessively in RPGs?

Or take something like the recent Fire Emblems that have a literal rewind function built in. Wouldn't it be silly if someone accused another player of not "truly" finishing Three Houses because they used it? I just don't know if it makes that much difference whether it was in the original release or not - it isn't like all games are perfectly balanced around every mechanic in their default form. There's pretty often going to be exploits of some kind or another.

Destiny Islands is lame
I'll not stand for this slander. DI is the perfect tutorial level.

  • Lets you practice battling as much or as little as you want and allows you to learn about things like Tech points and Revenge Value in a controlled, no-stakes environment.
  • Gives you the option of taking on some marginally harder challenges that require more skill but not perfect execution, with rewards that are useful enough that it feels worthwhile but not so glorious that they're gamebreaking for those that get them or punishing to those that don't.
  • Encourages exploration early on by hiding the Protect Chain in that little nook for clever enough to figure out how to get it. Again, nice to have, but not super powerful.
  • Sets up the central friendship between Sora and his buddies, and it feels natural and believable even in its limited time. You even get to compete against Riku in a couple different methods if you like, where he's considerably tougher than anything else on the island but not unbeatable.
  • Quickly develops the sense of adventure and air of mystery that so defines the game.
  • Short and sweet - if you know what you're doing you can get through it in minutes if you like, and even if you don't know what you're doing it doesn't take long at all.
  • Has an incredibly pleasant soundtrack that captures the peaceful nature of the world while still being lively and fun.
Twilight Town in KH2 does some of that, but it's all just worse. It takes way longer no matter how familiar you are with it, a lot of it feels like tedious busy work, the music is somber and forlorn and sounds like it's heralding the end of an adventure rather than the beginning, you really have no idea what's going on for most of it, the world is bigger but there's less exploration and agency so it kind of feels wasted, etc.

For the record, I myself don't think I've ever used save states or the like to finish a game that I otherwise couldn't have. My stance has no bearing on my own playstyle. And while I'm not gonna poke through >100 posts to confirm it, I don't think anyone in this topic has done what you're saying they have. I don't think hardly anyone has at all, because again, this was not a conversation until some dude made it one by sending out a hostile tweet about it.

In essence, it seems to me that the only people who care how someone finishes a game are the people who, as Jakyl said, think there's some kind of superiority proven by doing it a particular way. Because otherwise, why would you care?

Well, the verbiage I personally used was "gatekeeping," which I stand by and regard as pretty reasonable considering the tweet that prompted this topic was an unprovoked and unnecessarily aggressive argument as part of a discussion that literally no one was having.

I don't see how "let people play (and finish) single-player video games the way they want to" is seeking validation. Do you, on the other hand, not see how an opinion like that presented in Matei's tweet comes off as a hilarious attempt to claim some kind of feeling of superiority? "Maybe we both finished the game, but I did it the REAL way, so I'm better than you." That may not have been the intent, but it's how it reads. And people pointing out why that's a ridiculous sentiment aren't automatically "triggered" by it.

Thus, a very vocal, toxic part of the community blew up a legit complaint into something ridiculous that people are just much more likely to roll their eyes at.
There's always extreme opinions at both ends, though. I've seen just as many people saying anyone not buying the game, no matter their reason, is toxic or stupid or entitled or what have you.

People claiming the outrage was just people whining for no reason or because their favorite Pokemon wasn't included are, as usual, simplifying the issue.

People were upset to start with, yeah, some very much so. But a lot of folks were just kind of annoyed or disappointed. The outrage was because the explanation GameFreak gave for why they couldn't include all of them was flat-out bunk. They essentially said that they didn't have time to do models for every Pokemon because they're made from the ground up, and that the development time that they could have spent on that was instead directed towards polishing the game itself.

Turns out they imported models from Sun and Moon, so the first part was just a complete lie, and while it's obviously subjective whether they accomplished the second part, it's far from an unreasonable opinion to say the polish is largely absent when compared to a lot of modern games.

Then there's just a lot of smaller complaints which, again, may not bother an individual player, but that are still perfectly valid. EXP Share has no "off" option for absolutely no reason. I've heard many people say the rival is terrible or that the game is too hand-holdy. The trend has continued where features that people quite liked from recent generations have been removed.

All in all, I get the impression that a lot of longtime fans like myself would probably enjoy it just fine if we played. It's still Pokemon. But after many, many years of a real console Pokemon adventure becoming something of a holy grail, and after seeing what other much beloved franchises have put out on the Switch thus far (whether the comparisons are fair or not, and you can make your own determination there), Sword and Shield is just kind of a letdown.
