Nice. I'm also simmering on the idea of two different game-based images from the same game/series, it's just taking me longer to process than I first thought.

These are both screen captures that I posted to Twitter from the Switch and then downloaded on my phone

That said, you could make the argument that the games are simply equipment, in the same way you need to buy swimming trunks, poles for vaulting, kayaks, whatever

Yeah but you can get trunks from Nike or Under Armour or whoever and still swim. You can make your own if you really need to. But you can't play Starcraft in competition without Blizzard's product, or without the entire event being an advertisement for that product.

It also puts a third party in charge, at least in part, of the rules of the competition. The IOC would still be able to set rules for the format, such as what game modes are played, what maps are allowed, etc, but the game balance would still be whatever's determined by the developers.

My objection is mainly that it's a competition based on a specific copyrighted commercial product. Nobody owns swimming. You don't have to buy running. Gymnastics isn't the intellectual property of a corporation. But esports can't really get away from that commercial promotion aspect.

Speaking of the high garden battle, since the tyrell woman kicked the bucket, does this mean that the tyrells are the first house to fall? The rest of the tyrells including the flower knight (forgot his name) were slaughtered in S06E10.

What I realized after the fact was that it'd look better if I had the silver body GB micro instead of the black body, but this is a micro I bought used at Gamestop for like $30 a decade ago. A silver body one today would run me roughly triple that. Even a broken for-parts system would be more than that, so it's not really worth it.

If anything, maybe I'll take it apart again and spray paint the body.

Fun fact, most if not all of the variation of the gini coefficient between the 60s and today can be explained by assortative mating

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/01/29/new-academic-study-links-rising-income-inequality-to-assortive-mating/

Its not so much republican or democratic economic policies, it seems a lot of it is based on who we are choosing to surround ourselves with, and thus marry.

Dont get me wrong, trickle down economics dont work, but making tax rates at 75% brackets or what not don't do much either it seems.

"Greenwood and his colleagues estimated that the Gini coefficient was .34 in 1960, or about a third of the way to complete inequality. When they randomly matched people by education level and recalculated the coefficient, the answer was basically the same: The Gini coefficient still stood at .34, suggesting that assortative mating by education played little, if any, role in income inequality.

Then they applied the same method to 2005 data. Now the overall Gini coefficient was .43, an increase of about .09 since 1960 and consistent with other research. But when they randomly matched people by education and re-ran their analysis, the Gini index plummeted to .34, showing that today, %u201Cassortative mating is important for income inequality.%u201D"

I'm not sure you can compare education levels between couples today to a time when women had far less educational opportunity. Like, tons of women in 1960 just graduated high school and became housewives, so of course people didn't tend to marry someone with a similar education level. Now I'm not implying that this is something we should go back to but it certainly could affect assortative mating rates.

Another factor is that people tend to marry later in life these days, when their social circles are more limited and therefore rigidly stratified. In the past lots of people got married shortly after high school, to someone they met in high school. Just about everyone goes to high school and super-fancy private schools aside, that's a place where all kinds of people of different economic statuses are mixed together on a more or less equal social footing. Much more so than later in life where many of the people you meet are determined by your career, where everyone is much closer in terms of education and economic status. Like a brain surgeon is more likely to meet and socialize with other brain surgeons than with bus drivers, but they probably went to high school together. So if you're getting married at a younger age, it's more likely to be mixed in terms of education level.

Suprak the Stud posted...
Also, pain is notoriously difficult to manage and diagnose. Big Pharma is obviously pushing this too hard, but it isn't as if the doctors and big Pharma are addressing an imaginary problem. It isn't always obvious if a patient has drug seeking behavior, and while doctors have signs they are supposed to look for, most people who do this sort of thing ALSO know what doctors are looking for and can lie around it. There isn't an easy test you can hook someone up to and go "oh you have nine pain units - that's bad". There are plenty of problems with the relationship between doctors and drug manufacturers, but it isn't as if a big portion of a doctor's income is coming from those sweet sweet fentanyl profits. I believe "scumbag doctors" aren't the main driving force here, and a bigger problem in the industry are doctors suggesting too many tests (MRI, X-ray, etc) that aren't needed instead of giving away too many drugs.

A big part of the issue is the way hospital management companies (which are run by MBAs, not doctors) are run, and specifically that they have a very adversarial relationship with doctors. They do things like tie a doctor's pay to patient surveys about whether they liked the doctor, so when you have drug-seeking patients, they're not gonna give you a good evaluation if they didn't get their drugs. So while doctors aren't getting fentanyl profits directly, their employers are financially penalizing them for not prescribing it. This adversarial relationship is also why doctors order more tests than may be necessary, because it's not about practicing evidence-based medicine but about practicing cover-your-ass medicine, and also about maximizing billing. If there's any justification for a test, the HMCs want it run so they can bill for it, but doctors can defend it as not medically necessary and a waste of resources. However if the case is a one-in-a-million chance where the test would have revealed something that would have led to a better outcome and it wasn't done, then the doctor is in a lot of trouble and could lose their job. The HMC is really upset that tests weren't billed, but they go after the doctor under a guise of a medical failure. So instead doctors don't personally take on that risk and just order the fucking test.

The whole issue here is that HMCs don't actually WANT doctors on staff at hospitals because doctors command a high salary. They want to replace doctors as much as possible with nurse practitioners, PAs, and others who don't have as much education and expertise to command a higher salary. So when every decision has to be balanced between making the best medical decision and protecting your employment from hostile management, sometimes non-medical concerns win out unfortunately.

When he ran off to get the ballista, I expected him to bail or try to switch sides somehow. Or even just this was the time his luck finally ran out.

I expect he'll be the first to switch sides when they're captured next episode.

Vice: Project Doom is an NES game I never really knew anything about back in the day. I just saw this print ad on the back cover of a magazine and thought it looked stupid as fuck:
http://www.gamingmagz.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Vice-Project-Doom.jpg

But I heard it brought up once or twice in "hidden gems" discussions so 2 years ago when I saw a copy at a local shop I picked it up, and when I finally got around to playing it last fall, it shot up to my top 5 NES list. It's primarily a Ninja Gaiden style side scroller with a sort of sci-fi hardboiled detective theme, but it also has a couple Spy Hunter style driving stages and first person shooting gallery stages.

Astyanax is another NES game I hadn't tried until recently. It's another side scroller, in this one you have a power meter that fills automatically when you're not attacking so that your attacks are much more effective if you take your time and wait for the right time to attack. The same mechanic was also used in The Legendary Axe on TurboGrafx-16. There's also a 3-tier weapon upgrade system like Castlevania, but here each weapon is a valid option, depending whether you want stronger attacks, cheaper magic, or a balance of the two. It's not perfect though, your movement is a little slow and not very agile, and even though your character swings his weapon in an overhead arc, it only hits directly in front of you, so when you're getting the hang of the game you'll feel like your attacks are just passing through enemies.

And speaking of TurboGrafx games, Bonk's Revenge and Air Zonk were my favorites, but as TG16 games go they're pretty popular so I don't know if they count, even though TG16 as a whole is pretty overlooked.
