I don't know what the "right" strategy for our military is in Afghanistan, but I just think it's pretty fucked up that we'll soon have soldiers fighting in a war that began before they were born, and we aren't much closer to "victory", whatever that even means in this case, than we were when we started.

This tumblr post that was linked at the end of the Twitter thread Jakyl posted seems to have a pretty good take on the problems with his work. In light of this new information about Joss cheating on his wife it kind of makes sense; the self-loathing she describes seems likely to come from the way he's treating his wife.

And yeah this whole situation makes not just the creepily misogynistic stuff but pretty much every male/female interaction he's ever written have gross undertones. Like the Hulk/Black Widow romance in Ultron, how do you not now read that as "I'm a Bad Guy who's no good for you, what's wrong with you that you care about me" and a direct statement on his marriage? Or Wash in Firefly/Serenity, it's basically creating a character that's the good husband he tried to present himself as and then killing him as a means of saying that the ideal isn't real/realistic. Even all the way back to Buffy & Angel, he's an older guy who's more experienced in the world the younger woman is entering so he's a form of authority figure, and then having sex with her turns him from a tortured self-loathing good guy to a monster who tries to destroy everything around him. How do you not now read that as Joss being tempted by the young actresses he was in charge of and then destroying the life he'd had with his wife by sleeping with them? I don't know if he'd started having affairs as far back as Buffy S2 but he was clearly thinking about it.

The Nerd Trio from S6 that the post mentions is even worse because now it's like he's being defensive and blaming his wife. Only one of the trio is actually evil ("I'm not ALL bad, I just did one bad thing!"), and even he isn't the real villain of the season. The real villain is the woman who gets mad at him and overreacts! And it gets worse still, because it turns out it was actually a Nerd Quartet when he drags Xander into the mix to gaslight Willow into Remembering The Good Times and Don't Be So Crazy & Emotional.

In the books we specifically see that they do not. Jon uses Longclaw to minimal effect when saving the Old Bear, and Sam uses dragonglass with no luck when he and Gilly encounter an undead Night's Watch guy north of the Wall. Fire is the only effective weapon against wights. On the show regular weapons are more effective, probably due to the difficulty of choreographing a bunch of fight scenes with everyone needing fire.

Meanwhile we don't know that fire is particularly effective vs White Walkers, only Valyrian steel and dragonglass. My gut feeling is that dragon fire and wildfire are powerful enough that they work on everything, but we don't know for sure and I doubt regular fire is any issue for them.

Speaking of Sansa and Littlefinger, was anyone else hoping Sansa was gonna find his face in Arya's Bag O' Tricks? Like it was Arya in the scene where they talked about Brienne and she was tricking Sansa into sending her away? I don't know why, I guess so she could safely threaten Sansa because I guess Arya is a villain now? Or she's the good guy and Sansa's the villain? I really don't get what the Winterfell plot is supposed to be.

I don't think anyone was pretending to be dead in S1. They were dead and didn't reanimate until they got to Castle Black.

I always just assumed it was a timing thing. Like it takes a while for a corpse to animate unless a White Walker does it directly.

This is accurate, Benjen explained as much back in S6 when he met up with Bran and Meera. He says a White Walker stabbed him in the gut with a sword of ice and left him to die, but the Children of the Forest found him and stopped the magic that would have made him a wight from taking hold by shoving a piece of dragonglass in his chest.

The S1 wights were other rangers from the party that Benjen led beyond the wall, so presumably they met the same fate as Benjen but for whatever reason the Children didn't save them, perhaps because they had already died (though why they didn't burn the corpses is questionable). When the Night's Watch found them and brought them back they hadn't turned yet.

One thing that seemed weird to me with the Oil Ocean boss, if you're on the platform when it gets pulled down you pretty much die instantly, but if you jump off you can hop around in the oil. What's up with that?

And yeah, KL ignored the Night Watch's warning. Although, I don't believe it was Yoren who had the job of warning them. He really was just collecting recruits. IIRC, it was Thorne who got the job of warning KL and it was Tyrion who delayed him because he remembered Thorne being nasty from when he visited the Wall at the very beginning. And when he finally saw him (too late) he just mocked him for it. Unless this was a book/show change I'm forgetting, though I'm pretty sure what I described is the show version at least. But yes, either way KL blew it.

Another thing I thought of: if the Night King had these magic spears he could throw for basically unlimited distance, why didn't he just throw them at Jon? No way he couldn't have reached if he could reach Viserion flying overhead. Were those his special anti-dragon spears? Why would he even HAVE a dragon-killing weapon since I don't know how he would have heard that dragons existed again. Frankly I'm not sure when he would have heard that dragons existed in the first place considering the Long Night was way before Aegon's Landing. This was definitely the first time he'd ever SEEN a dragon, that seems indisputable.

No, they hadn't risen yet, they were regular corpses when they were brought through. Even if we accepted your argument, what are we to make of Benjen "The Dead Can't Pass" Stark in S6 then? Was he just the first to be so put off by Woke Emo Bran that he made up some bullshit to get away from him?

And speaking of the wight from Season 1, if this whole "bring a wight to King's Landing to convince everyone to take the threat seriously" shit works it's kind of insulting. Because if you recall the Night's Watch cut off its hand which was still moving and put it in a jar to bring to King's Landing to convince King Robert to send help, but Ned dicked around so long before granting the guy an audience that the hand rotted away to bones and stopped moving by they time he got a chance to show anybody. That's why the Night's Watch guy that was supposed to take Arya, Gendry, Hot Pie, and Jaqen to the North was even in King's Landing in the first place. So basically Ned blew off the Night's Watch and 7 seasons of television happened as a result. Fucking ridiculous, I'm glad that Night's Watch guy is dead so he doesn't have to see this.

A couple of months at least. I wasn't paying attention before that. Before this, everyone just wanted to know who the 3 dragon riders were.

I thought it was obvious once we saw Qyburn's ballista, but I figured that was how the dragon would die, and then it'd get zombified next season when the Army of the Dead got to King's Landing. Also I thought it'd be Drogon because he's the only dragon that's ever actually on TV usually.

But man that episode was the fucking dumbest shit I ever saw. I don't see how the Army of the Dead storyline isn't over. Three dragons against the whole fucking army and all the Walkers, that's it. I don't care how many dumbass Lannisters they win over and how much dragonglass they have, if all three dragons together can't get the job done there's no way they can win now that Viserion switched sides.

Yeah I think generations are usually 20 years or so and 1982 is the most common start date for millennials that I've seen, so there's at least a good year's worth that were born after 9/11.

Edit: the reason 1982 is the millennial/GenX cutoff is that by many definitions, millennials are people who turned 18 and became legal adults after the turn of the millennium (don't fucking 2001 me this is not my definition)
