I feel that we have kind of settled on search action/exploration action to replace Metroidvania, so its time to get rid oof Souls-like or worse yet Soulsborne. Any suggestions?

Search Action on the other hand makes it pretty clear that its an action game with an exploration focus.

Imo that makes some sense when the term is new

Though my point is more that it's better to move away from terms like "Metroidvania" and "Soulsborne", so even if Search Action isn't perfect, it's still better

Exploration action is more acceptable, but search action is straight up garbage terminology because it's too nebulous.

The term requires explaining no matter what, that's unavoidable. Most genres do if someone has no video game knowledge and Metroidvania requires more than most because it's much more specific than most genres (and really it's a subgenre anyway, and a specific one even at that).

Personally I don't really get the sense that Souls-like is even a genre/subgenre so much as it is a design philosophy that can apply to many different genres? Either way the existing term works fine.

if you tell someone about some Search Action game that's really cool they're gonna respond "what the heck does that mean" and then you either compare it to another game (Metroid) or explain in fuller detail, likely such as an action-adventure game you explore and gradually find tools and power-ups that help you progress further

ARPGs with at least some of the following:
-Healing items that replenish at checkpoints
-Behind-the-character camera
-Stamina meter for attacking, evading, blocking, running... Not just running, though.
-Multiplayer mechanics such as leaving messages, seeing other player's deaths or actions, and entering others' game worlds to assist or fight them.
-Hard
-You drop exp/money when you die. Maybe you can pick it up if you go to the same place before dying again.
-LORE
-Gothic and metal as fuck
It's a diverse set of elements which don't even all apply to "Soulsborne", much less Sekiro.

The Metroid part is no good either. That would promote genericization of the trademark. I doubt there's any real chance Nintendo loses the trademark but it's still enough of a threat that Nintendo will avoid doing it intentionally.

Souls-like is about an aesthetic as much or more than it is design elements, compared to Metroidvanias which tend to get grouped due to how they treat the map and progression. See Hollow Knight and Blasphemous which are considered both Soulslikes and Metroidvanias. It's a fine term, you can't really come up with a better one because it's so nebulous in the first place.

I don't get why some people are so determined to try and replace 'Metroidvania'. It's the widely used term for its genre and as far as I know it spread naturally, you can't brute force people to shift to a term you think is more clinically accurate.

Why are some people so bothered by it anyway, yeah it's not a perfect term but neither are the ones for most genres. Like 'role-playing game' means very little in itself, it came to mean a certain kind of game because people used it that way. That's how language works! Metroidvania has transcended the two series behind it and I see no reason to try and get rid of it, even if you could.

You could say that about a ton of video game genre names

Action
Adventure
Simulation
Strategy

All of those refer to a specific style of game, and yet the terms can be used to broadly describe tons of games outside their recognizable descriptions. Even something like "Roleplaying Game" and "Fighting Game" can be unspecific descriptions, but if you bring them up in gaming discussions people will understand the type of game you're referring to. It's not the description itself that matters, just only that people understand what the description refers to, which only takes convention to make happen.

It needs to become more common than the currently accepted term to catch on, and I have yet to see someone use it unironically outside of a topic like this where people hope it replaces Metroidvania.

It's not a better descriptor at all, which is its problem. The only people who want to use it are the people who dislike the term Metroidvania and only because they can't think of something better either.

I'm all for language evolves arguments and if Search Action catches on then sure... but I don't see it happening because Metroidvania works just as well and has already been established as such for decades - the only argument against it is it's not descriptive which frankly is a stronger argument against "Search Action". At least Metroidvania gives you a reference to what kind of game it is, and if you don't know you'll have to explain in either case anyways.
