I think Mettaton's section as a whole takes too long. Could've done with one less random minigame. The payoff is more than worth it though.

When you want to explore a new area, you'd better kill robot rabbits for 30 minutes first and maybe craft some armor
Only if you want to

and you wish you could burn through the game faster because you like the characters and world and want to see where they go.
You can. The game gives youna good number if settings to make the game go by faster if that's what you want

Yeah that was one part where I just accepted that my bedtime that night just became 'when I finish this section'. Good times.

It's weird to say for a game that is gameplay heavy and pulls that aspect off well, but I think CrossCode's writing impressed me more than any other part of the game. I think I enjoyed literally every bit of dialogue in the game.

Also can confirm regarding CrossCode that I had no crashes. Had some slowdown in some areas, but turning off weather effects fixed that.

For Para's eyes only: the Vermillion Wasteland, from start to finish, is one of the most emotionally satisfying stretches of gaming I've ever played.

5-5 underutilized its villain, the concept of which was really cool and should have been a much bigger part of the game as a whole. Other than that I thought it was really good.

When I was making my 'Favorite Stories in Fiction' topic, someone asked me if I'd played Night in the Woods. I said no, but that I'd heard good things, but was also hesitant to try it because of the effect it might have on my mental state. They then told me 'yeah don't play NitW'. I don't think I've ever seen a game where its most ardent supporters warn people not to play it.

I got up to like +10 Ascensions with Silent before I had my fill. Fun game.

Clocking in at an unconscionable 1,144 hours

Slay the Spire has been playable for about 850 days. Assuming you started playing since that original early release, you must have played around 1.35 hours of Slay the Spire every single day since then to rack up those hours. Still not MOBA numbers (do not ask me how much I used to play LoL) but I'm still impressed.

Haven't experienced V3 yet, but that makes me look forward to it.

It's funny - I probably like the DR series the least out of anyone visiting this topic but I was also an active part of the original SomethingAwful Let's Play thread that fan translated the first game over time, which is what led to the games being picked up for an official localization. I directly contributed to the game coming overseas, even if in a small way.

Huh, interesting. Well, I feel like DR1 had the most grounded characters
This is pretty much it, yeah. DR2 technically had more 'interesting' characters but I felt like most of them just ended up being terribly grating. There were like four people I liked seeing talk and the rest actively decreased by enjoyment of the game when they were onscreen.

That, and DR1 easily had the best atmosphere. I really like 'trapped in a place' settings and the other games just don't have that.

I tried Fire Emblem Heroes, by the way - I had that same early phase where the game just felt too boring to be interesting, and I thought, maybe this game gets more interesting if I stay with it, but I really have time for only one gacha in my life, and I've decided to make it PAD. I really don't need another one.
FEH was pretty fun for a while honestly, but Nintendo was obviously caught off-guard by how popular it got and they never got it to a point where it was consistently producing interesting content. At a certain point I realized I wasn't having fun...then I played for another four months, because being able to recognize the sunk cost fallacy at work doesn't make it easy to avoid it. I never became a whale for that game but even if I wasn't investing money, I was investing time that could be better spent doing other things.

Once I managed to extricate myself from that self-imposed hole, I got a lot better at free time management in general. I avoid Lizard Brain Games (mostly), and don't wait for things to 'get good' anymore, or finish a piece of media just for the sake of finishing it.

Puzzle & Dragons is not a game. It is a curse. I hate this game. I hate myself. I hate what I have become. Ranking this game on my list at all is a moral failing, a complete negligence of my responsibility to acknowledge this game as an utter monstrosity. On the other hand, not ranking this game on my list would be a lie. Step one is admitting I have a problem. I have a problem, and its name is Puzzle & Dragons. The puzzle is figuring out where the hell I went wrong with my life. The dragons are metaphorical.
Oh hey, it's me back when I was playing Fire Emblem Heroes

Absolutely. If you were to take this result at face value versus the PC poll, you would think Goose Game would be a legit GotY contender. However, I'm of the opinion that it's mainly doing this well because it's what so many here automatically think of when they think of '2019 indie game'. That's not to say that it will get blown out come the final poll - this is too impressive a result - but I also wouldn't expect it to contend with RE2.
Untitled Goose Game winning 2019 GotY because people on this site don't play new games anymore and experience them more through cultural osmosis than anything else would be the most GameFAQs thing ever.

Catherine is weird. Ended up liking that game for the opposite reasons I figured I would going in - came for the story concept, stayed for the puzzle action gameplay. I ended up thinking the plot was dumb but can still hear EDGE! clear as day.

Your personal experience playing it with friends sounds awesome though, don't think I've had a game where me an a bunch of friends played it all at the same time while switching off.

Fun list to read through. It's more or less the opposite of what mine would look like - speaking in general terms, your list makeup seems like it'll be 15% 3D games and 85% 2D games, while mine would be 85% 3D and 15% 2D. So far the only overlap we would have had on a Top 100 would be Xenoblade, Bloodstained, and maybe ZTD. That's what makes it interesting to read through though, and I'm taking notes on a few things I missed. Think I'll get Oneshot next time it's on sale.

The groundwork for Kylos redemption was set up the whole time,

I disagree strongly with this. He's only redeemable in the sense that you can redeem basically any character if you have them pull a tragic act of good right before they die. Episode 7 & 8 set up Kylo as someone who was too far gone; a byproduct of the failure of his mentors and his own lack of confidence in himself, who both committed heinous crimes and turned down a chance at redemption every time it was offered. I sincerely doubt that he was intended to eventually pull a face turn in the writing process for either of those Episodes.

I tried the 3DS remake of DQM and I ran into the problem I expected I would - the switch from 2D to 3D slows down the gameplay. This is the main reason I prefer the 2D Dragon Quest games to the 3D ones, actually.

Also the randomized dungeons in the original are unbeatable.

JRPGs may not be known for treating female characters well, but the gulf between X1 and X2 in that regard is gigantic. In terms of "would be embarrassing to play around other people", X2 might take the #1 spot outside of actual porn games and maybe Tokyo Mirage Sessions. It's amazing how little I'm looking forward to a potential X3 considering X1 is like, my favorite game.

Things die quick if you parry a lot (and a lot of normal enemies get cut in half), and doing so is already really strong. It's obviously weaker than a canon lightsaber would be but I don't think you can really make a satisfying combat system where everything dies in one hit.

The combat and respawning mechanic is Dark Souls, the platforming is Uncharted, the 'learn new abilities to open new paths through the environment' is Metroid Prime, and pretty sure the wall running is exactly the same mechanic as it was in Prince of Persia.

sf5 was a huge decline from sf4, particularly at launch. the long tail sales for it have been pretty good, but even those are down significantly from 4.

like it definitely made money but not as much as it should and it kind of poisoned the waters for a lot of people. capcom really need to bring their a game for 6.
SF5's sales for the base game were lower than 4 but SF5 also has a ton of microtransactions and season passes, and that adds up quite a bit. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was overall a more profitable game.

On the subject of 'depression' games being popular - I think that on average gamers are probably more likely to have depression or at least exhibit symptoms of depression, but the amount and visibility of 'depression' games has more to do with the way games are distributed and consumed. It's really easy to find stuff on Steam.

There's definitely some sort of trend there though, like how the number of games that put you in a protective father role spiked significantly once gamers started reaching that age. I'll never forget the weird experience of playing two 'dad' games voiced by Troy Baker back to back that released in the same year.
