It's a Nintendo thing. They're trying to distance themselves from hardcore e-sports.

I'm not entirely sure why, but I can only hazard some guesses, like having to cater too hard to the competitive scene instead of making their game for everybody

which is silly since cross tag battle and fighterz are able to get away with their simplicity without forfeiting attention from the fgc. i guess there's little point complaining about it though since this really only affects japan and apparently they're complacent

I agree with you but on the other hand I don't think balanced combat or online features should be treated as the only things indicative of quality either.

balance for competitive play? but the combat is praised for more than that. the first thing that comes to mind for me is the battle animations. design aside, pokemon sword shield leaves much desired in terms of animation imo

Okay let me rephrase that.

What I mean is that there are factors that influence a game's quality outside of the rigor of the gameplay system-- especially for something with simplistic gameplay like a JRPG. Like character designs and artstyle, for example, which Pokemon completely trumps Temtem in.

fair. its still silly to ignore the other half of the appeal to a monster catcher game. monster design is fairly important but again that shouldn't be the only thing indicative of quality.

Doing some reading around, apparently Japan has a law where prize money has to be given from the company of the product. It actually is Nintendo holding out on the prize pool and not Evo, and apparently it's really common enough that Japanese players are really used to it and think it's weird for a fuss to be raised.

damn. that's pretty stupid. the law and nintendos decision. good for evo since you have to pay for tournament entry or admission to spectate and none of that goes towards the pools it seems. wonder why nintendo is consciously screwing over people paying to participate in playing their game.

lol im not switching gears. you're arguing semantics considering my sentiment is the same regardless of how you word it. im giving one game a pass over another. by extension i am giving whoever gives me that game a pass. however, the fact remains im only giving them a pass for that specific game. the focus of both statements is the product that's being delayed. your attempt to argue semantics furthers my point. if im willing to give square a pass depending on the quality of their game then it shows that the only thing i care about is the game that's being delayed. my point is and always been what im waiting for makes a difference.
