And we've done it! Victory through space with India achieved!

With that being said, it's obvious through my more infrequent play that I've been getting burnt out and have other things I've been playing more, so what I'm gonna do now is take the month off where I don't have to force myself to play, then I'm gonna pick back up refreshed at the start of the new year! Big wars always take the energy out of me since they proceed so slowly.

Thankfully, this game is finally nearing an end, it's mostly to the point where I'm just clicking end turn now. We are 2 space parts ahead of Byzantium so it's looking like we will win the space race!

An interesting thing just happened and totally screwed over the Iroquois. They were very unhappy with their ideology and switched to Freedom...which they were then even more unhappy with, and the very next turn one of their cities revolted because they prefer our ideology of Order, so...I guess we have the city of Akwesasme now! Very unusual, never seen that happen.

The war with Siam is now over, at last. They have sufficiently been put in their place. After we liberated York and Bucharest, we actually decided to press on and take the remainder of their coastal cities for ourselves in short order, razing the smaller ones and keeping the larger ones. After that, we ended the war, so that we may scale back our military and replenish our funds. Have a fleet of 7 battleships with 4 range that can attack twice a turn will do that for you.

The space race is officially on, with ourselves and Byzantium having one part each. World Congress and culture are too far away, so the winner will be the one who successfully builds the spaceship first.

Tak And Uthai Thani were razed, while Chainat, Muang Saluang, and Nakhon Si Thammarat have become part of the glory of India. The other nations of the world are carrying on the crusade against Siam, but our part is done, and we may rest.

At last, after standing up to Siam, the other nations have seen our example and have joined the war! Though it is not my desire to incite global conflict, I believe it's necessary to keep the peace. It didn't help that Siam denounced pretty much all of them. England spent the time we bought them rebuilding their forces, and with our help they quickly retook their capital of London! Meanwhile, on the other end of map, Spain swarmed and eradicated the last Siamese outpost on that side of the world. We managed to keep hold finally of the Siamese city of Suphanburi, so the next targets are the former English city of York, and the former city-state of Bucharest and liberate them both. After that, we may decide to end the war and let the other nations take over, we have extended ourselves very far and our people are weary I am sure.

As our campaign against Siam continues, we turn our attention to two immediate targets: The former English city of Newcastle (north of Nakhon Sawan) and the city of Suphanburi. Newcastle is the only Siamese city north of us on the eastern continent, so eliminating and liberating that will allow us to have a unified front, while Suphanburi would be our first major acquisition in siamese mainland (Sawan is pretty much on the outskirts.)

The battle for Newcastle was over reasonably quick. We simply sailed our battleship fleet over and pounded them into submission, quick and easy. Then, we split up our fleet and sailed some over to our mainland to take care of some siamese outposts, a couple taht were on the islands above and one directly to the north of Delhi that had been hounding us for some time. Those crusades were also successful! Suphanburi, on the other hand, is proving difficult. We did take it over, but it was then taken back from us as they had more forces in reserve hidden in their territory. We should be able to take it again with our sizable air force, but it is a ferocious battle. While this is happening, we have a couple of submarines that have happened upon a modest navy to the south, near London, so they are scuttling those ships and whittling their numbers down. With some aid from our bombers, the fleet was made short work of. After Suphanburi is taken and secured, we will likely march our army over to the former city-state of Bucharest so we can liberate it, and at the same time sail our navy down to London since our navy can reach that. Once those two cities are liberated, we will likely stop this campaign as long as siam will allow us. Mainly because we finally can see the whole map and are able to see just how vast the Siamese empire is.

As far as game-wise, the endgame is rapidly approaching. Most civs have researched the Apollo Program, and a few civs are culturally dominant over a few other civs as well. There are regular votes for World Leader, and Siam has that on lock for the time being thanks to their massive city-state lead, but I noticed their income has dropped steeply since earlier on this game, so perhaps some of that control can be wrested back. They definitely aren't close to a diplomatic win yet. I suspect this will come down to a research victory first, as without world congress majority it's hard to get a pass for a world ideology (and therefore a culture victory).

As soon as the peace treaty expired, we resumed our offensive against those filthy Siamese. We took Ur in one turn by storm and in the process eradicated the aircraft they stationed there, and liberated the city-state. Then we set our sights on the pivotal city of Martaban, which served as a key point for their frontal army, as it's presence prevented our navy from venturing closer to the coast, and our army from making meaningful progress inland. After several turns of naval bombardment and aerial bombings to clear out the surrounding troops, we managed to take Martaban, but unfortunately were forced to raze it, as it was immediately liberated and then re-captured. At that point, it had just one population left, and our ground forces available should it have been liberated again were vastly outnumbered by an oncoming onslaught, so we decided it was more valuable gone, rather than spending the time trying to protect it. At least now, our troops have more room to maneuver.

As far as air combat, I guess being a tier below really did make a lot of difference, because we had noticeable gains in the air battle this go around. We were getting notifications that we were intercepting, as opposed to last time our city just eating it.

Our plan to capture Nakhon Sawan went reasonably well! We captured it as intended but unfortunately had it taken back, which forced us to recapture it. That wasn't difficult, but it did greatly reduce the population we had to work with, sadly. We intended to remain at war with Siam and recapture Ur, but their land forces outpaced our somewhat range-limited naval fleet and threatened to retake Nakhon for good, so we were forced to end the campaign for now in order to give ourselves time to rebuild our forces.

In the meantime, we are actually reasonably set up for a culture victory if siam does not get a diplomatic victory first! We are influential with 2 cultures, and have gotten the 3rd tier order policy that gives us bonus tourism to civs with less happiness than us (aka everybody).

...so now real talk, can someone explain air combat to me? I thought I understood it but to be honest, my forces were getting hammered by bombers the whole time, mainly my city. I had no fewer than 6 triplanes against like 6-7 next-tier bombers at any given time, upgraded to fighter jets midway through, and although I don't expect one hit kills I would have thought their bombers were taking damage but it was literally every turn my city was taking multiple bombings that kept its health perpetually in the red, to the point it seemed like their bombers had been taking no damage at all from my interceptions.. Am I missing something here?

Sadly, this city is one tile off the coast so it is inaccessible to such ships. I was taking Ur with Ironclads, but unfortunately liberating it means you lose the ship you took it with so eventually I ran out anyway.

This war is much tougher than I anticipated, Siam's massive empire allows for a near-continuous resupply of troops; at one stretch their troops were actually increasing despite the casualties they were taking from our bombers every turn. The City-state of Ur has changed hands no fewer than 10 times, and just when we thought we had finally broken through and secured it for good, Siam began fielding anti-air units that rendered our war bomber fleet vulnerable. They've also seemingly focused all their energy on us and left England alone, as there has been no further action on the southern border. In addition, they have been bombing our forces just as fiercely as we were bombing theirs, and their technology exceeds ours, for the time being. Our interceptors are doing well but there's just no end to their aircraft. Finally, no other nation seems interested in joining the war, despite nearly everyone else having denounced Siam.

Therefore, since it seems we will make no progress simply fighting against a wall at Ur, we have switched to a different strategy. While most of our land forces hold the main front between Ur and Pataliputra, we have sent our newly-researched battleship fleet nearby and begun bombarding their city of Nakhon Sawan, as most of their aircraft is stationed there. If we can land a couple of infantry units on the shores just as the city is at its weakest, take it from Siam, and use our aircraft and ships to clear the immediate area of hostiles and prevent it from being retaken, that will give us a major staging area from which to better assault Siam from, as well as just a generally good tract of land for our empire.

We joined the war too late to save England's capital, but we did manage to liberate a major city of theirs, Hastings. Unfortunately, Siam's military is too great for us to take head on, we not only had to abandon an offensive on London (England's captured capital), but have now had to pivot and protect our city of Pataliputra. Luckily, we have just enough naval and aircraft to help beat back this offensive, but we also lost 2 city-states in this effort. Hopefully we can liberate Ur soon enough, but Bucharest will be under Siamese control for quite some time. For now, though, we must focus on keeping our troops fresh enough to stem the tide before we can go on the offensive. On the bright side, we have a submarine and they do not, so we are keeping the southern flank under control with just that sub.

https://i.imgur.com/lGzRwXf.png
This is the state of the board after the initial war declaration. We soon retook hastings and made north towards our own city after Siam had too much air support to make a dent in London.

https://i.imgur.com/NMTUxa6.png
This is the vanguard of the Siamese army. I know it looks bad, but since this picture, we have managed to stay their forces with the combined might of army, navy, and air force, as well as our city's natural defenses.

Siam is becoming quite an annoying thorn in our side. Not only do they rule the world congress and have the funds to back it up (a whopping 18000 gold in their treasury) but now they have proposed an embargo on us! I have been willing to overlook their war with our friend England (who just lost another, not so important city to Siam), but the time as come to deal with Siam. We are officially building our first major military in our civilization's history. Once we have built a substantial force, we will take Siam by surprise and show them that we are not to be trifled with despite our peaceful ways.

Also we have 69 happiness.

Finally got some time to play, got up to turn 300, not a lot is happening in the world but there is quite a lot of good things happening within our empire! We have the most tourism in the world right now, and we built a couple of world wonders in Hermitage and Big Ben. We adopted the Order ideology and got 33% off of purchasing buildings, combined with Big Ben is giving us nearly 50% off. That will increase even more once we finish up the Commerce policy tree, allowing our strong economy to help rapidly expand our empire. We are also close to researching hospitals, which will boost our food production which at this point is badly needed. Our cities are a decent size but not really blossoming in population.

The only conflict happening is the ongoing war between England and Siam, which seems to be favoring neither side at the moment. Both sides have landed somewhat weak blows against some border cities against each other, but that's it. The lack of conflict and friendship with nearly every civ has allowed us to keep only a token military and put our funds towards infrastructure and research agreements.

We have befriended Songhai, the Iroquois, and Byzantium in short order, hopefully this peace lasts! Though we are a bit irritated that a few turns before completing the Sistine Chapel, Byzantium finished it, but alas. At least the arts are flourishing throughout the world. Our economy is flourishing as well, we got a Great Merchant, and the funding combined with our previous wealth has allowed us to sign four research agreements in quick succession.

Meanwhile, England became host of the World Congress, so it's good that we're friends with them!

-10 turns later-

Sadly, it did not. Siam desires England's land, so they declared war. Shameful really, I had hoped we would be above petty land-grabbing, but it appears I will have to keep an eye on them. They've even settled near our borders.

-a bit later-
England's outpost city of Newcastle has fallen to Siam, but it was well away from the main English empire, so hopefully they will be able to withstand Siam's assault when it counts. Even worse, the new vote for the host of the WC went to Siam as they are friends with many city-states. I find them loathesome, but we will have to bear it for now.

Meanwhile, this is getting tiresome, as Byzantium has now blocked us from building the Uffizi while we were building it. Even I have limits to my patience.

After a long voyage, one of our ships has discovered the last civ: Byzantium! They are on the northeastern most part of the map.

Our economy is starting to bustle, our trade routes are able to reach several other civs and are providing us with much gold, and the arts are flourishing as well! We are even in the process of constructing the Sistine Chapel.

Meanwhile, there may be some unrest brewing on the eastern continent, Siam approached us about a war with England but we declined, but then Byzantium told us that England is plotting against us. I can sort of understand as they may be jealous of our city we just settled on their continent, but it was open for a long time, I feel they had plenty of time to settle it if they wished. Nevertheless, we are monitoring their activity for now.

Since our citizens are thrilled with our empire thus far, we decided to expand and gain some more resources. Thanks to the friendliness of our neighboring city-states, we feel comfortable enough to settle between them, though it will be a bit of a tight fit. Welcome the city of Vijayanagara!

Meanwhile, we discovered Spain to the Northeast, which leaves just one civ undiscovered. We also have another tract of land to the immediate east across the strait, though we will wait to see if England claims it by the time we're ready to settle it, as we don't want to upset them.

Sadly, we will not be able to found a religion as there are no more allowed to be founded. We were close, but we fell just short of the faith required for a great prophet (usually I use the liberty tree bonus to get a great prophet, but we went tradition this time so we had to get faith the old fashioned way).

Meanwhile, we discovered a great trove of minerals to the northwest, and and managed to settle the city of Mumbai to claim the bountiful riches in that land. We also built the Temple of Artemis, as well as progressing further in the Tradition policy tree, so our people are very well fed right now. Bountiful harvests for all!

We begin on the coast with a good variety of tiles, including some salt that we promptly settled our capital of Delhi on, and marble to be gotten soon. Initial exploration has already located another good area, with some crab and furs to the east. We started off with the Tradition policy tree (advanced by some nearby ruins) to help our growth. Hopefully there aren't many people nearby, and if they are hopefully they will not be warmongers...

"Our words are backed with nuclear weapons!"

It's INDIA. For anyone that doesn't get the joke, in the original civ game an "alleged" bug in Ghandi's programming made it so that he was the most likely in the game BY FAR to try and nuke people, to the point it became a meme in the civ community and eventually an ascended meme as Ghandi still has nuke ratings ABOVE 10 in his characteristic profile (Which is the coding that determines how AI leaders act). I say alleged because apparently Sid Meier denied this bug in a memoir, but regardless, Ghandi will not hesitate to threaten you with nukes if you cross him! So let's take a look at what India's all about, shall we?

Passive: Population Growth - Double unhappiness from # of cities, half unhappiness from # of citizens
War Elephant (replaces Chariot Archer) - No rough terrain penalty, doesn't require horses, stronger, slower to build and move.
Mughal Fort (replaces Castle) - +2 culture per turn, +2 tourism after Flight is researched

I feel like I'm really going to like India. Right after I get done critiquing my slow expansion style, I get a civ who you really WANT to expand more slowly with, it plays right into their strengths. They seem prime for a culture victory, as extra population means more specialists means more great people, not to mention the Mughal Fort bonuses. It will be critical to time new settlements properly though, finding some early luxuries is going to be crucial.

And we did it! France honestly I wish had declared war on us sooner because uh, us being allied with every city state, and friends with the Ottomans and Indonesia, let to us being able to set the entire world against them, and it did NOT go well. In 10 turns:

In the west, Indonesia and our own navies teamed up and took 2 of their coastal cities quite easily. They also lost another of their cities they had stolen from Indonesia previously.

In the center, we finally broke through the line we could not penetrate so long ago and took their central city of Tours.

To the north, The Ottomans and France unloaded nuclear warheads at each other, leading to both capitals being bathed in fallout. Then France lost their topmost city in Lyon and Paris being close to capture.

That will teach them to pick on someone they deem weaker than themselves. Regarding the game itself, Rome definitely is not my playstyle. Early war is my least favorite thing and it's what they excel at. I also was not very good at the whole "Capital buildings are constructed faster" because Rome was not very production-oriented, which made it difficult to construct buildings there.

I also have determined big time that I don't really like tiny maps. I like having 8 players because 4 grows kinda stale the whole game. I also need to get better at expanding early on, I ended up with over 70 excess happiness. Which is great, but it means I didn't really push the boundaries early on and get more territory, which would have helped our empire greatly.

A breakthrough in the world congress has been reached, we've managed to enact Freedom as the world ideology! This has caused the Ottomans to go into a whopping minus 40 happiness, as well as helped us get closer to a diplomatic victory (which is going to be our only hope as 2 of the 3 civs have already researched the Apollo Program.) France is fighting us for control of 2 city states, but we have more wealth so we should be able to outlast them in that regard.

Meanwhile, the number of cities the Ottomans have is working against them, as it's what's contributing to their massive unhappiness. The City state of Samarkand has already revolted the turn after Freedom was enacted, and joined Indonesia (the more culturally dominant Freedom-follower between us) and they set them free, so that's more votes we can bring under us if we can amass the gold to do so!

Edit: Oh and the citizens immediately forced the Ottomans to adopt Freedom, I guess there will be no more revolts.

Our first vote for the World Congress's final form (when diplomatic victory is possible) has turned out well, we have become host! So far it's looking like that is going to be our main path to victory, as other civs are almost a full tier ahead of us in research (We're barely in modern, 2 civs have hit atomic).

In the meantime, we might actually see some conflict that doesn't involve us! The Ottomans denounced France, I guess because they're taking up land the Ottomans could use. Because, you know, the Ottoman's 20+ cities (I'm not joking) aren't already enough. Perhaps that will help us catch up to them a bit, if it turns into a drawn out battle. The Ottomans and French both have been encroaching on our territory too much for my liking, but I imagine we side with France if war comes, as they are a more direct threat and keeping them happy keeps us happy.

Indonesia proposed a declaration of friendship, so naturally we took it. They also gave us a nice boost in happiness after they followed us in the path of Freedom, which negated the hits we were taking from other ideologies. We did accomplish 2 big things otherwise:

We won the world's fair, which gave us a nice social policy and culture boost, and we finished the Commerce social policies, which has solved our happiness problems for the rest of time. Now we're focusing on building our navy, as we also discovered another source of Iron for some more frigates, and we'll need all the help we can get if the Ottomans decide to attack us by sea (Indonesia told us they were marching an army to Rome.) We'll see if this peace lasts much longer.

We are enjoying a time of relative peace at the moment, which has done wonders for our empire's infrastructure. We're starting to be able to get some city-states on our side, and our production and economy are starting to blossom as well. Our borders with France remain somewhat tense, but for now they seem to be the friendliest to us of the other civs.

We were the 2nd to get an ideology, so we took Freedom, but France has taken autocracy and Ottomans have taken Order, so our pitiable culture is causing some unrest. Luckily however, we are awash with luxuries that are offsetting that and making our citizens happy enough. Our next step will be catching up in military technology, as we are on riflemen while some city states and civs have gotten to great war infantry. We lucked into a massive amount of coal though, so we should be able to field a sizeable navy once we get to Ironclads. We're also trying to shore up our culture by hiring more specialists to generate more great people, that should help as well.

The Ottomans declared war on the city-state of Samarkand, but luckily their strategy was terrible, choosing to assault by sea with land units which allowed Samarkand to fend off the assault quite easily. They are one of our allied city-states, but we don't want to get involved in a conflict right now, as the Ottomans caught one of our spies stealing their technology.

We were finally able to negotiate peace with France, no strings attached. It was obvious the terrain, combined with their musketeer frontline, was going to be difficult to breach. However, we shall maintain the borders vigilantly, as the French are never one to quit for very long.

Luckily however, though we did catch a glimpse of an Ottoman ship, it was only one, and our now expanded navy have scouted the immediate area and have not seen any sign of a fleet. It seems we are safe for now.

Now that we are in a time of peace, we've been getting our cities caught up on some buildings they were lacking, as well as national wonders like the East India Company, and Oxford University. Our workers are trying to get our food production ramped up, as all of our cities have sort of stalled in terms of rapid growth. We need more people if we want to start producing great people.

Finally, we were able to find the resources to produce a settler, and they sailed to a large unclaimed continent below the Indonesians, and therefore, the city of Neapolis has been founded! Rich in resources like iron and whales, and diverse in land types, this city should prove quite prosperous in time.

Well this is unsettling. Indonesia has come to us with intel that says the Ottomans have launched a sneak attack against Rome by way of the sea. Though it will take some time for them to reach us, we have not fortified Rome at all, as this was completely unexpected. We have just discovered Astronomy, so we will need to build some caravels to ready our waters at once.

Meanwhile, the war against France has stalled a bit, mainly because we are constructing some trebuchets to assist us in taking down their next city. The terrain is also very rough, full of hills and forests, cut in half by rivers. Interference from their city state ally of Mbanza Kongo is not helping matters. France seems content to sit their Musketeer units in their territory, so we will use this lull to further prepare a force to punch through their lines.

Blast, curse those french. They may not be smart but they're tenacious. They spent the time we used taking Marseille and Tours to rebuild an army, this time of almost entirely crossbowmen. We are taking more casualties than before, but we constructed a 2nd citadel in the direct path of their invasion, so I'm confident we can hold the line once again.

The Ottomans, meanwhile, informed us that Indonesia is plotting against us, so I have a trireme monitoring their units carefully. A war with them right now would be very problematic, as France still believes they hold the advantage and, thus, will not accept a surrender unless it is to our detriment. No such thing will happen.

The nerve of these french ingrates! We took that outpost city of Marseille (and are razing it), and they want to lay down arms and for us to give them not only that city back, but our 2 non-rome cities! Their hubris is matched only by their ineptitude in combat. Their city of Tours, which is directly to the east of Cumae, will be next.

We seem to have broken the siege! Their army has shrunk significantly, while ours has remained the same, if not stronger now that we have researched Steel. France settled another city right next to Rome, so destroying that will be of utmost importance. Then, if our forces are still strong, we shall march towards Paris and show them true Roman might!

Also, Indonesia discovered all the civs, the last civ in the game was the Ottomans, very far to the north of France.

Though our forces are half the size of the French army, we declared war as we felt we had no choice, lest they continue marching on Rome. We saw a moment where their forces were spread out, and took that chance to launch a pre-emptive strike in an attempt to gain a momentary advantage. Things are very much in the balance right now, as their forces are surrounding Cumae, but we destroyed the forces around Rome, so hopefully our ranged reinforcements will be able to stave off their numerous trebuchets enough to beat back their invasion. Their casualties are greater than ours so far, unit preservation will be key. None of our 3 cities are capable of training new units in a timely manner. We will have to make what we have last, for the time being.

Just a question, that energy bending in the final episode wasn't literally out of nowhere was it? Didn't aang receive guidance on how to do it from like a giant island turtle or something? Like that was the mechanism that finally solved his "I don't want to kill ozai" dilemma.

Great writeups though, the payoff in that final ep is indeed fantastic.

I feel war with France is imminent. They initially marched their army towards Cumae, but have marched around and are now sending some units near Rome. I am trying to build my army to combat them as best I can for when it happens.

Economy-wise, we're starting to find our footing a bit, having finally gotten our trade routes up. We also established Protestantism with Tithe being the main bonus, so hopefully as that takes hold we will be able to rake in a bit more money.

Oh boy, the 2nd of 3 other civs is none other than greedy France, who is on the opposite side of me. I settled my 2nd and 3rd cities of Antium and Cumae, both of which have upset the neighbors, though france more so. Gonna have to build an army in a hurry.

Alright so, we start off in some rather narrow terrain, surrounded by marshes and woods, with some water below us. We decide to settle right where we started as that'll give us some water maneuverability should these bodies of water lead somewhere. There's quite a bit of luxuries around us, we already have a spot picked out for our 2nd settlement when we get our settler. We went with +1 culture for every plantation, as we have citrus and sugar near us.

Indonesia is one of the other 3 civs, to the far west of us.

So, I've been thinking it over, and I'm gonna relent a little bit here. Part of the reason for this project was to expand my experience and not just do the same boring experience over and over again. I was put off by the prospect of anything other than standard 8 player civ with some land and some sea, but I think I should give it a chance. So I'm going to be starting over and actually doing the Japanese Mainland map with Greece, 4 players and all. Maybe it won't give me the full greek experience, but it wouldn't be the first time I didn't get the full civ experience, and it'll be different if nothing else. So I'll get to that likely tonight at some point, as long as there are no serious objections. I know 100 turns sounds like a lot but as the civ vet will know, the first turns always go by really quick so I didn't dump too much time into this current map.

Alright, through our first 100 turns things are actually shaping up quite well! We founded a religion, founded the city of Antium, built 3 world wonders, and are starting to explore overseas finally. It doesn't look like I'll much be able to use ballistas as we appear to be the only civ on this continent, but maybe we'll have explored enough by the time we get the Legions. A smaller continent south of us has 3 city states, 2 of whom we've befriended thanks to taking out a camp, and another seeming larger continent to the southeast that we're sailing around now.
