| Doe 07/19/19 6:39:44 PM #8 | For a long part of the lifespan of videogames, they have been pieces of media with simplistic 'artistic' elements like writing and presentation, typically having just enough to facilitate whatever gameplay mechanics the developers want players to waste hours in. There is definitely a stigma to them, but besides that. Most developments that people consider to be milestones in videogames are hardware advancements and software solutions that allow for more objects in gameplay or for better animations and graphical density. Storytelling techniques in videogames are really just taken from existing mediums; at most you may add some QTEs or have branching paths, but these just change what is told (Success or fail, A or B), not how it is told. So even when games are released that are meant to mirror big budget movies with gameplay elements like Detroit: Become Human, or if a visual novel perhaps features a groundbreaking narrative, are we celebrating the success of the videogame as a powerful unique medium, or are we just looking at movies and picture books with extra steps to turn the pages? Where is the artistry unique in making a videogame, and is that artistry something that can tell art enthusiasts something about themselves, the world, or the creator? If not, is the fact that these other artistic elements are packaged together inside a 'videogame' hinder them? --- |
