Theres a scene where you and two guys try to hit on girls at the beach, and there's a "gag" where one is a transgender woman, who is characterized as having facial hair and calling the protagonists "boy toys." So transgender people equals icky. But apparently grown women thinking about using their authority to groom a teenager into a relationship is totally cool, as happens in the Hermit social link. I've also read that as a woman protagonist you can have a romance social Link with Ken Amada, who is in elementary school. There's also Bebe, who is a foreigner student living in Japan. He's the only person in the Home Economics club, which is about fashion and sewing. But the game makes no attempts at any gags about you and another dude sewing with each other alone after school. Which I find a little shocking for a game from the early 2000s. I guess the lesson here is you cant get an accurate reading of a country's culture by playing an anime high school game --- |

| Doe 07/17/19 5:17:21 PM #10 | The island breaks the New Leaf economy wide open, obsoleting stuff like the rivers or mainland bug catching, meaning if you want to effectively get bells to pay for the many many many shit to pay for in the game then you will have basically zero chance to interact with villagers in the process of your endeavors. Which is kinda the actual point of the games Main Street is also a step down from the City in every way but variety. It's super sterile. The City was a great idea, its execution was just bafflingly lazy and limited in scope. Ultimately the devs have failed to add anything to the original formula except to add more dollhouse mechanics for the town. And if you like that that's fine but I think it kind of misses the point of what Animal Crossing was supposed to be as an experience. I wish the devs would handle the next game looking more for ways to add meaningful interactions rather than modeling more static objects and bridge locations for a town you dont really do anything in. Not related to my main point but in NL they also nerfed sell profit at Timmy&Tommy's to give the player some reason to use Re-Tail, which is really dumb. --- |
