TopicHow do people not know how to swim?

It is mostly a psychological thing for me at least. When I was 4 my parents took me to the pool for the first time, and without even thinking I just jumped in the deepest part. Nearly drown, my mom had to drag me out. After that, never had a desire to learn how to swim. Hell, with the exception of maybe once or twice in my life never even let my head be submerged in water after that. Even as young as 5 I refused baths and would only take showers.

As for school, my middle school had a pool, but we never had mandatory swimming lessons. You could even opt out of pool class if you couldn't swim.

My entire experience in New Jersey was basically trying to get into a gas station on the left hand side of the road (where you couldn't turn left), and being told I couldn't pump my own gas once I got there.

Those 10 minutes in that state was enough to last me a lifetime. I never intend to go back.

I had to replace mine last year for $3500. Thankfully summer isn't too bad here so I could get away with the cheapest central air unit they had (~12,000 BTU). Although I wish I could have held up for another year because my electric company just started offering cold climate heat pumps, which would have been great since my furnace is 20+ years old and will probably need to be replaced in a year or two.

It may not have been clearly explained but my nostalgia goggles comment was aimed at the tendency of older gamers to be extremely biased against 3D adaptations of the beloved 2D franchises of their childhood. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but I think unconscious biases involving childhood nostalgia play a huge role for a lot of people

For me it is a simple question of "Does this game work in 3D".

Sonic I think for the most part does (bad 3D games after Adventure 1+2 aside) because the game is still about speed and timing. Ninja Gaiden is another great example. On the other end, platformers didn't work in 3D for a LONG time. They slowed the gameplay down too much, revolved too much on collecting then actual challenge, and levels were focused on large areas you would go over multiple times vs. short and fun levels you can complete in 5-10 minutes.

Where does Metroid fit in for me? Somewhere in the middle. I fully admit the only way Metroid was going to work in 3D was in first person mode (with a 3rd person camera for Morph Ball), but they had to sacrifice so much to get it to work it doesn't feel like a Metroid game anymore. The biggest difference for me is that the stuff they took away (Screw Attack, Speed Booster, Space Jump) are upgrades that are meant to make the backtrack much faster. However, because they are gone, even becoming much stronger doesn't make those areas any easier or make you go through them any faster. It also means they had to get rid of the timer and speedrun type rewards because you just can't improve the speed of the game without sequence breaking. As a result, it just doesn't feel like a Metroidvania style game.

Also, I hate hate HATE the scan visor. It is just another tool to pad the game length to hide the fact that once you get 100% of the items there is no more replayability.

Green Day, I didn't mind when they "Sold Out" in 94 (to me they were the same band, just with better production quality), but I haven't liked them since they "Sold Out" in 05.

Avenged Sevenfold, haven't been a huge fan of their work since The Rev died (Nightmare doesn't really count since he was mostly involved with the making of it).

Danzig had an Electronica period in the mid 90's till early 00's, but I have only heard bits of it. What I heard though I didn't like.

You could also lump in pretty much any classic rock band from the 60's and 70's who were still making music in the 80's (Pink Floyd, The Who, Rolling Stones, etc.), or most metal bands from the 80's who were still making music in the mid-late 90's. That will save me the trouble of listing them all here. Only real exception was Motorhead, they were awesome in the 90's.

Edit: Oh yea, and pretty much all "Punk Rock" bands just suck now. Except The Offspring, their latest album is awesome.

I had to do the Presidential Fitness Test just about every year. I had to look up shuttle run, I remember doing it once or twice in elementary school, but that was it. We also had to do rope climbing, which I actually liked since it was super easy for my thin frame.

I certainly hated square dancing, but the worst was gymnastics. We always had to practice for what seemed like weeks and they would invite the parents to watch our "routines" at the end of it. I always just picked pommel horse since it was the easiest, and conveniently forget to tell my parents what day the gymnastics routines where so they didn't have to see me.

If you don't like doing laundry, just buy a bunch of packs of fruit of the loom and wear those when you aren't going anywhere instead of wearing the good stuff when you are just sitting around the house. Thats how it is in most places. And its funny how a lot of people get (insert culture here)'s food and they get beef. Good example is Korean. Theres a VERY good chance that most native Koreans never had beef a day in their life but when people get "Korean" food they get Korean BBQ beef or the like. Which was typically for the very very well off and not the common food of the people until VERY recently.

A lot of that has to do with cultures mixing. I mean, there is the fact that beef is way more prevalent in some countries then what they normally would put in the food so they just substitute it.

For example, while Eggplant Parmigiana is an Italian dish, Chicken Parmigiana is American, strictly because chicken was easier to get and cheaper then eggplant back in the 19th century when Italians were immigrating.

A few thoughts after reading through some of this topic:

1) This is the most Karen thing I have ever read.
2) Plenty of stores have policies that they can't sell you alcohol if you don't have a valid ID. Expired IDs are not valid
3) If you somehow encountered someone who was "cool" enough to risk getting fired because they sold you alcohol without a valid ID, then good for you. Not everyone you meet will do that.
4) It is not Safeway's fault that the DMV fucked up your license renewal, so I don't know why you are trying to argue with the teenager making minimum wage behind the counter about it.
5) Not only is license renewal by mail been a thing since before I started driving some 23 years ago, but they send you the renewal notice months before your license renews. So literally no reason for your license to expire.
6) No way in hell am I reading 150+ messages of something that should have been resolved in 5.

Lowering the drinking age would make more sense.
Part of the problem with that is age laws are less about fairness and more about responsibility and statistics. Specifically, the drinking age one is because when the drinking age is 18 the number of drunk driving accidents increase by a large margin.

https://one.nhtsa.gov/people/injury/research/feweryoungdrivers/iv__what_caused.htm

So really the only way the drinking age is going to lower to 18 again is if driving becomes a non-issue (likely a multi-decade and multi-trillion dollar thing, so not in our lifetimes), or if some state lowers the age to 18, forgoing all federal funding that keeping the age at 21 gives them, and in 10-20 years it is determined there was no change in drunk driving incidents.

I remember Doom 3 being a disappointment because it was such a different game compared to Doom 1+2 (not bad IMO, just different). Half Life 2 was really just Half Life 1 but with more of everything. ID Tech 4 was a more impressive Source, but I felt neither was as good as Unreal Engine 2.5 (which at the time, most pre-builds couldn't even run)

That said, I remember neither game really being able to be played on my PC at the time, so I didn't play them until I seriously got back into PC gaming around 2008/9.

In the sense of "playing games way less then I used to"? Probably around 2015-2016. Although it comes in fits and spurts. If I am playing a game I enjoy, then I'll devote a good amount of time to it. If I am in a lull period, I'll be lucky to spend a few hours a week.

Ended up having to remove automatic billing, ignore all their "late payment" notices, have them cancel my service and send my bill to collections, then pay off the debt collector the moment they called me. When I payed it off, I think I put something like "Fuck <name of company>". on the memo of the check just to give the debt collector a good laugh when they processed my payment.

Speaking from experience, most delays on projects come from one of two cases:

1) Poor or lack of Project Management
2) Unreasonable expectations from higher ups.

Granted, #1 can be broken down to a multitude of reasons, for video games mostly being underestimating the complexity of the project or changing the scope too much during development. But the point is it is almost never the case that they will advertise one date and know they are aiming for another date farther in the future. If anything, the opposite is true.

Okay so heres the menu:
https://www.steak48.com/steakhouses/philadelphia/
And I honestly cant see myself eating $100 worth of food just by myself.

Even if we are taking into consideration that this is a fine dining experience.

If I am getting one of their steaks for $59-68 dollars (highest is $74). That still leaves roughly 30$-40 dollars left. After that I cant just get a salad because thats a low dollar item at only $12-15 dollars (for a salad lol). So immediately we look to appetizers which range from $10-24 dollars, with two outliers, one being $29 dollars but that wouldnt bridge your gap. It would take the $48 dollar Chicken Fried Lobster Tails to close that gap. They have other $30 dollar choices like the fresh seafood towers but like the appetizers these are things more meant to be shared rather then be consumed by a solo person.

And you don't get anything to drink? Their drink menu is $20 - $40 per drink (some are as high as $300 for top shelf). You could easily hit $100 for just steak and a couple drinks. So yea, $100 minimum is not hard.

In no way am I saying any reasonable person should be spending $100 on a meal you can make at home for 1/5 that. But if a business can make money off a people who will, I am not going to get angry about it. I'll just eat my meal somewhere more reasonably priced.

I thought Season 8 was great up until the ending. It just felt forced to make the show end on a happier note (and then the show had another forced season after that which still had a crappy ending).

Season 5 is probably my favorite though, followed closely by Season 3.

Probably not that great, although I haven't been in an accident that I was at fault for in about 16 years (and my last accident that wasn't my fault was about 7 years ago). I consider that more luck than anything since I have gotten pulled over for speeding a few times and do run the occasional red light.

That said, I am a way safer driver than I was 15 - 20 years ago.

I'm pretty sure the cost of all my physical games wouldn't even cover the deductible on my insurance plan.

I had to lower the difficulty on both Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.

Shame has befallen my household.
I mean, Doom Nightmare difficulty was built off of "We made the game so hard no sane person is going to beat it", even to the point that most Doom purists still say Ultra Violence is the difficulty to beat the game at. They had to bring that back for 2016 and Eternal.

I'll be honest: Literally the only reason I bothered getting vaccinated. I never cared about getting the virus, I never cared about other people getting the virus, I just hated having to wear a mask every time I went into public and I wasn't going to be one of those people who is going to argue with someone making $8 an hour about it. So when it looked like the CDC was going to lift restrictions for people who were vaccinated, I signed up.

I haven't had a needle in my arm in over 25 years, but if that is all it takes to mean I can go to the grocery store and not wear a goddamn mask, then sign me the fuck up.

Before covid, probably 1-2 times a week. I haven't eaten any take-out since covid though. At this point I am afraid to go back, it will probably make me sick since I haven't had it in over a year.
