My very first instant messaging service i ever used was...

There were many instant messaging apps over the last 20 years...and ICQ was what started it all for instant messaging to send messages to your friends. Many others came after including AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live and Xfire which are all now dead except ICQ surprisingly and Windows Live which is now Skype. Only old school users would remember these services..

Then the new generation of instant messaging apps popped up with Facebook Messenger, SC, Discord and even people just texting on their phones.

Back in the 00's, AIM was the most preferred app on Gamefaqs followed by ICQ

But which instant messaging service was your very first?

I used AIM from like 2003 up until the day Verizon murdered it.

I loved AIM, it was way better than the "replacements" like FB Messenger or Discord.

I've felt "disconnected" ever since it went away, the online friends I had on it all scattered to different platforms and mostly lost touch with them.

One of the best things about AIM was how little of a resource hog it was (opposite of Skype, for sure!). Numerous times, I had "no internet" with nothing else accessible and yet was still connected on AIM, IM'ing w/ my tech savvy friends on steps to try and repair my connection. If you had even the tiniest bit of a signal, you could connect to AIM.

I think probably AIM in either the late 90s or early 2000s, but I can't really remember. I'm not sure I really used anything after it closed up until I got into using FB's messenger.

Yep, ICQ (UH-OH!) I still remember my number and password ._.

Spent countless overnight hours chatting it up until my dad had to take the PC away.. then it was off to a net cafe in the city once a week where I could chat til about midnight when the last train would roll by

I got on Yahoo, but mostly to play games, then tried AIM because that's what my now wife was using back then

AIM back in 97-98. Honestly I never liked using IM even back then, so I probably had a handful of people on my buddy list, then got rid of it when I switched computers.

I guess it would be AIM. Actually, the first one I used, I had to log into my AOL account to get online, then open the IM feature. AIM came out a few years later.

MSN. It was very popular in grade 8/9/10, and that was prior to it going to Windows Live. I had AIM a couple of years after MSN, to talk to a couple of PotDers.

I forgot about ICQ. There's absolutely no way I could recover my account. I barely used it anyway.

Yep. That's where I started with it too. Then AIM came out around when high speed internet did since AOL was dying.

AOL's messenger . Not AIM which was later separated and usable without needing AOL. The actual AOL network. My family subbed to AOL I think in like 96 to 98 or something like that. But you could only talk to other AOL users. AOL was kinda cool it had message boards similar to gamefaqs. Also chat rooms. Lots of different different communities. The idea of AOL is obsolete now but it was cool back then
