That's... weird. Also sounds too out there to be true. I know FF is making somewhat of a resurgence, but I just can't see something this bizarre being real.

Its like, Chocolate is good. Sour Patch Kids are good. Sex is good. I should eat chocolate dipped Sour Patch Kids while having sex. Might not turn out as good as planned but idk. They might pull it off if true.

What I've read seems to indicate that a "Souls-style Final Fantasy" is all but assured, but whether it's a remake of the first game or not is all speculation. They've also implied that "Souls-style Final Fantasy" might not be exactly what we think it is.

I'd go with both of those, but then again I'm also kind of biased because I've never liked Dark Souls and I think the Final Fantasy franchise has sucked ever since the Squeenix merger.

I was also kind of annoyed at the time when they decided to chase the MMO train (with FFXI, and later FFXIV) and made it part of the main sequence, so if they put out a Dark Souls-y FF and call it FFXVI or FFXVII I'll probably shit on it even more.

I mean you say that, but FFXIV is widely regarded as one of the best MMOs, and one of the best JRPGs of all time, especially in Shadowbringers, and Endwalker is coming later this year. And Yoshida is producing FFXVI, and he really clearly understands and loves FF, so I have really high hopes for FFXVI

Both. There's high demand for old WoW, because nobody likes newer WoW. And the monetization on both is outrageous.

Theoretically it is worse because at least the gold farmers were earning the gold through the game, so it was just moving money in the economy between 'players', but from the average player perspective it largely amounts to the same thing in the end.

Arguably worse, since it creates an incentive to design the game around the philosophy of maximizing income from the gold sales. This happened with Diablo 3: The original approach to loot strongly encouraged use of the RMAH because you'd get so much gear your class couldn't use and relatively little that it could. When it's a third party doing it, if anything, there's an incentive to ensure that RMT doesn't upset the game's balance too much, which is generally beneficial. There's going to be the harm of whales paying for unfair advantages either way, but at least the latter option incentivizes positive changes to the game.

But third-party gold sales also introduce entirely new risks (like having your account stolen by farmers, or putting your personal info at risk when arranging deals with less reputable sellers), a greater desire to find ways to hack the game (to generate gold quickly), and if it's profitable enough, it can incentivize people in poorer nations to essentially set up sweat shops to mass farm gold (possibly with farmers being pressured into work by unscrupulous bosses).

Some developers might wish to bring said trading in-house to defuse a lot of those issues and maintain greater control over their own in-game economy.

But there's also (obviously) the added motivation of "If all this money is out there to be made, why aren't we the ones making it?"

adjl posted...
Arguably worse, since it creates an incentive to design the game around the philosophy of maximizing income from the gold sales.

Nearly every MMO already has that incentive, because they're more or less built around the premise of maximizing subscription time to increase revenue. Or in cases where there's a "free" to play model, microtransactions are almost certainly introduced to offset "disadvantages". It's why you'll often see things like games which require you to pay more for extra characters, or for extra storage on your characters, or to decorate your in-game housing, or for exotic skins or cosmetic items, etc etc etc...

"Sure, you could play the game as a free player, but if you really want to bypass all these stupid limitations, you're going to need to subscribe to the premium service..."

It's also why most MMOs are developed around strong addiction loops and long-term grinding. It motivates players to keep playing without the developer having to constantly come up with tons and tons of new content. Similar to how GTA Online just introduces a few new cars every month and raises the prices on them into the millions, so even people with tons of free time to grind start thinking about how much easier it would be to just buy that $5 Shark Card. Then they exploit other well-known psychlogical phenomena like "FOMO" ("New skins, available for a limited time! Get them quick before they're gone forever!"), "Keeping up with the Joneses" ("Buy these cool new Fortnite skins, or else all the kids at school will laugh at you for playing as the default character!"), and "Sunk-Cost Fallacy" ("I can't stop playing now, because if I do my character will get deleted and I've spent a thousand hours building it up! Guess I'm going to have to pay the subscription fee again this month...").

In a similar vein, it's also why so many MMOs (and games with microtransactions in general these days) tend to start out with rapid leveling and cool gear drops, only to throttle them back at higher levels and slowly start drip-feeding you rewards instead of constantly flooding you with them - it gets you invested and addicted quickly, accustoms you to the rush of playing, slowly gets the addiction claws in, and then starts to siphon the money out of you (whether via in-game transactions or just time-based subscriptions).

The entire MMO model is basically a box full of demons meant to eat your brain and turn you into a revenue-generating slave for the publisher.

Ok, what are some game-types where 32+ players working together would be a benefit rather than a money grab?

They do, but that's a matter of maximizing playtime, rather than directly trying to make gold hard enough to come by to incentivize purchases. You touched on it with F2P ones: Typical game design there is to do something like make the player character walk annoyingly slowly, then charge for mounts or other speed boosts, effectively creating a problem then selling the solution. Maximizing playtime is more nuanced than that, and in many cases is actually what people want out of an MMO (gradual, long-term progression), provided it doesn't go too far and make the whole thing unpleasantly tedious.

It's still a balancing act, but the ideal balance point for both the company and the players is one where people remain engaged with the game for a long time, which means the players' goals and the company's are at least somewhat aligned. With microtransactions, the ideal balance point for the company is one where they make tons of money off a handful of whales, with non-whale players only mattering insomuch as is needed to maintain enough of a player base for whales to remain engaged. That's not so good for non-whale players.

I'm super excited if this is real. I'm not a fan of Souls-type games because I'm not good at them and don't feel like trying hard to get better, but if it has FF ambience, environment, and music, then I will give it more effort than I've given to games like Nioh. Honestly, I don't want a challenge in games because I'm a lazy old man, but if I could enjoy a next-gen visit to the world of the original Final Fantasy, I'll deal with whatever gameplay mechanic they shove down my throat. I also hate Dissidia, by the way. I just thought of that and thought it was important to include.
