Because of course gyms are super-spreader sites. Anybody who feels safer in a gym needs a reality check.

I am not surprised that fitness classes held in rooms instead of the ventilated open area of the gym, plus with mask use not being enforced, would result in transmissions.

Of course, I don't attend such classes or patronize a gym that allows people to remove masks.

evidently there was a time in his life where he wasn't getting enough exercise, so maybe he shouldnt be THAT amazed.

Being overweight is primarily a result of dietary habits. You can maintain yourself at an above average weight while still getting routine exercise, and receiving benefits from that exercise. I certainly was a fat kid growing up, but that changed after I moved out on my own, had full control over my diet, and paid attention to what I bought/ate. Here we're talking about adults.

And after I did lose weight and get down to a lower body fat percentage, it was clear the problem wasn't fat, but actual breast tissue which unfortunately doesn't go away with weight loss. Some men have moobs that are purely due to fat accumulating, or maybe co-occur with tissue enlargement. Regardless, this isn't about being underweight, overweight, or anything like that. Just commenting about activity. I haven't (and won't) make any negative comments about people's appearance.

75% is diet. Don't eat McDonald's and drink soda all the time and you'll be much healthier. No exercise needed though recommended.

Diet and exercise are both beneficial but there are benefits of exercise that diet alone cannot accomplish.

It's cold out and there's a pandemic.
I'm doing my part by staying inside.

Going on a walk outside by yourself or with people from your household is fine. Particularly if you're keeping distance from others. No mask even necessary if you're not in close proximity to others! I live in a populous area and have no problem going on walks while keeping distance from others. Of course you can wear a mask if you want, some people enjoy it in the cold weather.

No, it's covid testing for people who are asymptomatic. When the test positivity rate is low (like with an asymptomatic population) you can pool many samples together and run it as a single test. If it comes back negative, then you can tell everyone in that pool that the test was negative.

If the pool tests positive, then the samples are tested individually to determine which caused the initial positive result in the pool.

This is only effective when the test positivity rate is low, otherwise you end up retesting everyone individually, undermining the point of pooled testing.

That seems very excessive. Still a lot of folk pointed out over here you're safer in a pub then in a supermarket yet the hospitality industry is closed until further notice and has been for months. I get it supermarkets are essential stores but that still doesn't change the point. Eh well. I can always chose not to go to these places if I cared that much.

It's an asymptomatic testing program provided by my work, and it's encouraged that everyone do it weekly.

I go to the same gym at the same time every day, and it's always the exact same crowd of ~6-8 people which is lower risk than a revolving crowd. The square footage is about the same as my grocery store. Everyone has their temperature taken and is required to wear a mask. It's spacious enough that people can stay spread out, with plenty of ventilation. Hand sanitizer, disinfectant and wipes are everywhere. Staff are constantly wiping things down, on top of patrons doing the same. They are able to do contact tracing if a case is confirmed because the gym has contact info for everyone who would have been there the same day.

Compare this to the grocery where you're going to encounter different crowds every time. People aren't temperature screened. At mine you're forced into close proximity at the checkout. I've never seen surfaces being disinfected at the grocery aside from occasional touch screen wipedown. I don't see contact tracing being used at the grocery.

Any way you slice it for me... Even given the lower time spent in the store compared to the gym, the risk at the gym comes out lower.

That said I'm still minimizing my social contact otherwise and being tested for covid weekly to be as certain as possible that I'm not negatively affecting others.

Like the receptor binding domain of the spike protein, which needs to exist as a rather specific looking protein in order to actually bind and enter the cell to cause infection.

Natural antibodies from a real infection would not have this bias for targeting relatively constant regions. I'm not going to. One, because jewelry isn't needed. And two, I don't care enough to change what someone thinks of jewelry. Just because on person doesn't like it doesn't mean someone else won't. If they have the money for it, why not buy it. If someone's wife likes some jewelry they saw, I see no reason not to buy it if you have the funds for it... Like I said, I don't really care for jewelry, but some people do. And I see nothing wrong with getting it if you can afford it...

There's a difference between getting value out of something because you like how it looks, and liking something entirely because it's expensive or is a signal of wealth.

I also think it's dumb to buy expensive jewelry just because you like how it looks, but at least that's more justifiable than "I want this shiny thing so other people will be jealous of me."
