A program that replaces police officers with health care workers on mental health and substance abuse calls in Denver, Colorado, is showing signs of success, according to a six-month progress report. Despite responding to hundreds of calls, the workers made no arrests, the report said and the city's police chief told CBS News on Friday that he believes the program "saves lives."

Under the Support Team Assisted Response (STAR) program, health care workers are dispatched in lieu of police when responding to incidents involving issues with mental health, poverty, homelessness or substance abuse. STAR providers only respond to incidents in which there is no evidence of criminal activity, disturbance, weapons, threats, violence, injuries or "serious" medical needs.

During the first six months of the program, from June 1 to November 30, health professionals responded to 748 calls, including trespassing, welfare checks, narcotic incidents, and mental health episodes, according to the report. None of those cases required help from Denver police and no individuals were arrested.
...
The health care workers are intentionally given cases that are less likely to result in police use of force. But as the deaths of Daniel Prude, Patrick Warren Sr. and countless others have shown, police responses to such cases can end in tragedy.

People who have untreated mental illness are 16 times more likely to be killed during a police encounter, and those who have an untreated severe mental illness are involved in up to half of all fatal police shootings, according to research by the Treatment Advocacy Center.

In 2020, Mapping Police Violence found that 94 people were killed by police who had responded to reports of someone behaving erratically or having a mental health crisis.

"By dismantling the mental illness treatment system, we have turned mental health crisis from a medical issue into a police matter," John Snook, executive director and a co-author of the Treatment Advocacy Center study, said in a press release. "This is patently unfair, illogical and is proving harmful both to the individual in desperate need of care and the officer who is forced to respond."

Going into 2020, Denver police said they found that calls for mental health assistance were 17% higher than the three-year average. Of the cases to which STAR responded, nearly 60% of the people who had diagnosed mental health issues were affected by schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

Similar programs to STAR have been rolled out elsewhere in the U.S. STAR was modeled after the Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets (CAHOOTS) program in Eugene, Oregon, which also uses unarmed intervention members to respond to mental health calls without police backup.

Denver's latest program is just one aspect of the police department's "layered" approaching to tackling issues in the community, Pazen told CBS News.

The city also has three other alternative response programs, including a co-responder program that pairs police with licensed professional behavioral health clinicians to respond to incidents in which people are experiencing behavioral health or substance abuse issues, Pazen said. The department has seven case managers who follow-up with people who were assisted by co-responders or the STAR team, or who were referred by police officers.

https://prospect.org/labor/warehouse-workers-wage-historic-fight-for-union-recognition-amazon/

Amazon is no stranger to doing everything it can to defeat workers efforts to win some say in the conditions of their work. At Bessemer, it has mounted an assault on the workers attempts to form a union. It continually texts anti-union messages to its workers; it has created an anti-union website, DoItWithoutDues.com, and has compelled workers to attend captive audience meetings with managers to hear yet another anti-union message. And it hasnt stopped there.
Besides its 5,800 employees, the warehouse is also staffed by between 500 and 700 contract workers who are employed by a staffing agency, though it is difficult to say exactly as these payroll records are separate from Amazons. As theyre not employees, these workers cant vote in the election, and many have been enlisted by the company in its campaign to defeat the unionwhether these workers want to be enlisted or not.
One such contract worker is Jonathan, whose last name has been withheld to protect his privacy. Jonathan tells me he doesnt know what the union is. Hes been at Amazon for just the past six weeks, working in cleaning picking up cardboard and trash. He earns about $13 an hour. On his blue vest, he wears Vote No pins.
Since the unionization campaign began, Amazon has increasingly contracted the services of workers like Jonathan or Darius, who started working at Amazon two weeks ago, recently released from prisons and desperate for work.
RWDSU organizer Michael Foster (aka Big Mike) sympathizes with these young men, whom he describes as a walking billboard for Amazons anti-union efforts. You got these guys just getting out of being incarcerated, so its hard for them to find employment. Amazon is preying upon their downfall. Resisting managements requests to help its campaign, he adds, can put their job in jeopardy. They think, Even if I cant vote and my manager comes up to me, the manager with the authority, the manager whos giving me my paycheck, asks me to wear a pin that says, Vote No, how can I tell him no? Amazon knows theyre trying to stay out of prison and feed their families.
...
Last November, when the Bessemer workers filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to form a union with RWDSU, the bargaining unit consisted of only 1,500 of the plants employees. Today, as ballots are about to be mailed out, the bargaining unit has increased nearly 300 percent to 5,800. While the plant in Bessemer was intended to employ 1,500 workers, Amazon flooded the shop floor to prevent the union from getting to the 30 percent threshold of employees required to call an NLRB election.
I asked Joshua Brewer, the campaigns organizing lead in Bessemer, for clarification on that number, and he acknowledged that he was initially taken aback when the number of workers signing cards began to reflect not just how popular the union was but also how much the workforce had grown. It was kind of a surprise at first. We had thousands of people signing cards, and we were like, Holy shit, do we have 100 percent of this place? What is going on here? 5,800, thats a lot of folks, he recalls.
On October 20 of last year, as RWDSU went public with its campaign, workers and organizers were met with police trying to clear the traffic jam their rally created. Despite some initial attempt to harass them, the police have since left RWDSU organizers and supportive Amazon workers alone. Every day since, excepting only Christmas and Martin Luther King Day, RWDSU has been at the plant gates at every shift change, Brewer tells me.

https://apnews.com/article/public-health-prisons-health-coronavirus-pandemic-executions-956da680790108d8b7e2d8f1567f3803
As the Trump administration was nearing the end of an unprecedented string of executions, 70% of death row inmates were sick with COVID-19. Guards were ill. Traveling prisons staff on the execution team had the virus. So did media witnesses, who may have unknowingly infected others when they returned home because they were never told about the spreading cases.

Records obtained by The Associated Press show employees at the Indiana prison complex where the 13 executions were carried out over six months had contact with inmates and other people infected with the coronavirus, but were able to refuse testing and declined to participate in contact tracing efforts and were still permitted to return to their work assignments.

Other staff members, including those brought in to help with executions, also spread tips to their colleagues about how they could avoid quarantines and skirt public health guidance from the federal government and Indiana health officials.

The executions at the end of Donald Trumps presidency, completed in a short window over a few weeks, likely acted as a superspreader event, according to the records reviewed by AP. It was something health experts warned could happen when the Justice Department insisted on resuming executions during a pandemic.

Fans are remastering the soundtrack to Super Mario World, creating uncompressed versions of the original tracks that were never possible on the Super Nintendo hardware. The Super Mario World Restored project is ongoing, but you can already listen to nine tracks from the original game over on The Bricksters YouTube channel.

As The Brickster explains on Twitter, this isnt simply a case of taking the tracks from the original game and cleaning them up. Instead, creators like Moola, michael02022, and unknown are tracking down the original samples used to produce the tracks and rebuilding the songs, without having to compress them to fit into the SNES consoles piddly 64kb of audio RAM.

OS: Windows

Portability: I'm not really going anywhere at the moment, but presumably there will come a time when that's nice to have. I think something on the smaller end of screen sizes would be better.

Gaming: not really looking to do much of this with it, but it could be a nice bonus. I do have Game Pass Ultimate, so maybe some of those PC games are worth checking out.

https://apnews.com/article/legislature-legislation-local-governments-nevada-economy-2fa79128a7bf41073c1e9102e8a0e5f0

Planned legislation to establish new business areas in Nevada would allow technology companies to effectively form separate local governments.

Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak announced a plan to launch so-called Innovation Zones in Nevada to jumpstart the states economy by attracting technology firms, Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Wednesday.

The zones would permit companies with large areas of land to form governments carrying the same authority as counties, including the ability to impose taxes, form school districts and courts and provide government services.

The measure to further economic development with the alternative form of local government has not yet been introduced in the Legislature.

Sisolak pitched the concept in his State of the State address delivered Jan. 19. The plan would bring in new businesses at the forefront of groundbreaking technologies without the use of tax abatements or other publicly funded incentive packages that previously helped Nevada attract companies like Tesla Inc.

Sisolak named Blockchains, LLC as a company that had committed to developing a smart city in an area east of Reno after the legislation has passed.

The draft proposal said the traditional local government model is inadequate alone to provide the resources to make Nevada a leader in attracting and retaining businesses and fostering economic development in emerging technologies and industries.

The Governors Office of Economic Development would oversee applications for the zones, which would be limited to companies working in specific business areas including blockchain, autonomous technology, the Internet of Things, robotics, artificial intelligence, wireless, biometrics and renewable resource technology.

Zone requirements would include applicants owning at least 78 square miles (202 square kilometers) of undeveloped, uninhabited land within a single county but separate from any city, town or tax increment area. Companies would have at least $250 million and plans to invest an additional $1 billion in their zones over 10 years.

The zones would initially operate with the oversight of their location counties, but would eventually take over county duties and become independent governmental bodies.

The zones would have three-member supervisor boards with the same powers as county commissioners. The businesses would maintain significant control over board membership.

The governors economic development office did not respond to questions about the zones Wednesday.
Now, is that good?
