A friend of mine was preparing for a go-kart race of some sort, and we were all in this garage with the go-kart. I noticed that every time I pulled back on the kart, it sprung forward, almost like a wind-up toy. Obviously, this would have been against the rules, so I lifted the cart up, and three things fell out from behind the front wheels: a small mallet, a baseball, and a clear box containing a sandwich and a bag of chips.

How did this mechanism work?

Trump did not talk to Moon on the phone Sunday — in stark contrast to the two calls he had with Shinzo Abe, the prime minister of Japan and a leader who has proven much more willing to agree with his American counterpart. This will worsen anxieties in Seoul that Tokyo is seen as “the favorite ally,” analysts said.

Moon, who was elected in May, advocated engagement with North Korea but has also acknowledged the need for pressure to bring the Pyongyang regime back to talks. He has also come around to an agreement between his predecessor and the U.S. military to deploy an antimissile system in South Korea.

Trump’s tweet was widely reported across South Korean media, and Moon’s office responded to the tweet with a measured statement Sunday night.

“South Korea is a country that experienced a fratricidal war. The destruction of war should not be repeated in this land,” it said. “We will not give up and will continue to push for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through peaceful means working together with our allies.”

Trump’s twitter jab came amid news that the U.S. president has instructed advisers to prepare to withdraw from a free-trade agreement with South Korea — a move that is resolutely opposed by South Korea and one that would undermine the two countries’ economic alliance.

Analysts said Trump’s actions were puzzling.

“It’s strange to see Trump going after South Korea more aggressively than he’s going after China, especially since China also thinks that dialogue is central to solving this problem,” said John Delury, a professor of international relations at Yonsei University in Seoul.

In an earlier tweet, Trump had said that China “was trying to help,” although he added it was “with little success.”

Delury said that the “passive aggressive” tone of Trump’s tweets suggested that Moon had been standing up to the American president during their previous phone calls. They spoke Friday after North Korea sent a missile over Japan.

“It sounds like Moon is saying, ‘We’re going to have to talk to these guys’ — which is true — and Trump is frustrated,” Delury said, noting that the latest tweet seemed to address Moon directly, with its “like I told you.”

Trump’s tweet was even more puzzling, analysts say, because Trump himself — both as a candidate and as president — had repeatedly suggested he would be willing to talk to North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un.

On the campaign trail, Trump said that he would be happy to have a burger in a boardroom with Kim, and in recent months he has called Kim a “smart cookie” and has said he would be “honored” to meet him.

South Korea’s response overall to Trump’s recent pronouncements has been much more muted than its past explosions against its protector — a sign that they know Trump is a different kind of president.

“They think they’re dealing with an unreasonable partner and complaining about it isn’t going to help — in fact, it might make it worse,” said David Straub, a former State Department official who dealt with both Koreas and recently published a book about anti-Americanism in South Korea.

“Opinion polls show South Koreans have one of the lowest rates of regard for Trump in the world and they don’t consider him to be a reasonable person,” Straub said. “In fact, they worry he’s kind of nuts, but they still want the alliance.”

http://abcnews.go.com/US/los-angeles-area-wildfire-largest-citys-history-mayor/story?id=49584916&cid=social_twitter_abcn

A wildfire burning through mountains just north of downtown Los Angeles is the largest ever within city limits, the city's mayor, Eric Garcetti, said.

Only one home has burned and no one has been injured as the blaze that as of Saturday had grown to more than 5,000 acres and prompted evacuation orders for more than 700 homes in Los Angeles, Burbank and Glendale.

High temperatures afflicting Los Angeles as well as other areas in the West made conditions tough for firefighting crews.

The city's fire chief, Ralph Terrazas, said the fire is slow-burning and moving down a hill, at the base of which are homes. He said the biggest factor in fighting the blaze is weather and wind, and that while the wind was erratic Friday it is less so today.

http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/09/cleveland_police_union_will_no.html

Cleveland's police union will not be holding the American flag for a pregame ceremony for the Brown's first game Sept. 10, Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association President Steve Loomis said late Friday.

Union members had planned on participating in the flag ceremony for the first game on Sept. 10 until some Browns players kneeled during the National Anthem before a preseason game, Loomis said in an interview with cleveland.com.

The players not standing for the national anthem is offensive because of the sacrifices that people make that allows these guys to enjoy the success that they have, Loomis said. While they're benefiting from protection of the flag they are kneeling in disrespect of it, he said.

The Browns management and ownership condoned this disrespectful activity of their employees, Loomis said.

"It's just ignorant for someone to do that," he said. "It just defies logic to me. The fact that management was aware of what they planned on doing, that's as offensive as it can get."

Browns players knelt during the national anthem before playing against the Giants on Aug. 21.

"As an organization, we have a profound respect for our country's National Anthem, flag and the servicemen and servicewomen in the United States and abroad," a Browns spokesman said in a statement at halftime. "We feel it's important for our team to join in this great tradition and special moment of recognition, at the same time we also respect the great liberties afforded by our country, including the freedom of personal expression."

They locked arms during the playing of the national anthem prior to the preseason game against the Bears on Aug. 31.

Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown said prior to the game against Bears that the players handled themselves well.

"Professionally, thoughtfully, probably as thoughtfully as any others have," Brown said in an earlier cleveland.com article. "These are guys that mean well. We really push our guys to be active and conscious about the communities they live in and what goes on around them that might be even larger than football. They do that, and we support them. We respect their efforts to use their platform to make some change and express themselves. And I think for all those guys that knelt initially and then last week decided to stand -- I won't get into why they made that decision -- I think they are going about it in a very responsible and thoughtful way. I'm actually proud of them."

Loomis said many of the Browns fans are law-abiding patriotic citizens, and he called the move by the players a slap to the face of the fans.

"When management allows you to do those things, then that's on them," Loomis said. "It's hypocritical of the Browns management and ownership to want to have an armed forces first-responder day, and have us involved in it when they allow their players to take a knee during the national anthem. That's the very representation of what we stand for. That's why we aren't going to."
