It was fun for like 20 hours or so but I got bored after beating the second divine beast. Just kinda felt like I'd done everything gameplay-wise, and the open world design meant no structured narrative to keep me invested in the story.

Plus lots of unfun micro-managing like temperature control and breakable weapons.

I loved BotW and still have several places that I haven't explored (plus finishing the DLC), but I agree with Godnorgosh that the sequel should have a more linear, story-focused direction. One, so that it doesn't completely invalidate BotW, and two, because it'd be a chore essentially playing the same big-ass game again.

Despite being a sequel, Majora's Mask was radically different from Ocarina of Time, and the two coexisted on the N64 as their own unique experiences. BotW and BotW2 should have that same connection.

I beat it twice and there's no way I saw everything there is to see, and on one playthrough I only missed four shrines. Such an awesome game, hope the sequel lives up

Side note I snuck into Ganon's castle with 4 hearts and was FREAKING OUT because I didn't even think I could get in and here I am fighting endgame monsters.

Poor villain design.
Poor Story
Empty world .
After a while the shrines get boring.
Breakable weapons.
Besides being empty the world is just so lifeless . Compare this to Skyrim or Oblivion. There are so many more things to do the world. You have a impact, you can feel like a part of it.
The Master Sword. can run out of energy .

I don't like Breath of the Wild. Honestly, I hate it. I detest weapon deterioration systems, its open world, and its lack of dungeons. It did away with almost everything I like about 3D Zelda titles and quite possibly killed that style of game given its runaway success.

I still recognize that it's a good game. It may be every single thing I hate about modern gaming and the literal end of a style I deeply enjoyed, but I'm not so pressed that I can't recognize that it's well-made. BotW haters need to find a new hobby; it's been almost four years at this point and it's just sad.

The world has a lot more to do in it than Skyrim outside of quests, and you can traverse so much easier.

Poor story? It's LoZ ffs and this is one of the better ones for sure.

There are 3 towns with 5 people in it , it is dead world.
And just because the LoZ stories are normally bad it doesn't mean that we should over look this bad story.

It's filled with life aside from humans, and there are a lot more than 3 towns. The entire point of the game is Hyrule castle has been destroyed which was the main hub, along with its surrounding town.

the game had many of that kind of moments, where it will let you do things you didnt think were possible if you try very hard, and then you feel youve cheated the game or something.

I remember coming up with this elaborate strategy to climb to the top of a tower I shouldnt have been able to since I didnt have enough stamina or revalis blaze or a way to fight the electric wizzrobes guarding it, but I did it, then I was like oh shit I did a thing before I should have been able to!

i actually do agree with this.

BotW's story is so bad the game would have been better off removing it entirely

and it's not like zelda stories are all "bad". in fact almost every game in the series has some element of compelling storytelling, even if it's not contained in the main quest. i don't think BotW has any of that

It has too many mechanics that break other mechanics. It gives you lots of freedom to do jack shit.
Horrible music, bosses, "dungeons" puzzles, voice acting, "characters, lore, I could go on.

It's just a horrible mess. After the tutorial, which is hand holdy as fuck, it's all just sidequests until you decide to go to the final boss. Even the Master Sword is optional. What a damn travesty.

It lays down a good foundation for a game but it's just a bland sandbox. Sure it can be fun for a while but once you start seeing the patterns it becomes mindless and boring.

But seriously this was one of my big 'hats off' to the game. They were very careful and even then knew that "let's say they get this thing, it doesn't really matter if it's gamebreaking because there is so much in this game and if they put in the effort they deserve it"

My favorite moments of the game had a lot to do with guardians. They were utterly unfightable and for so long playing it I thought "How the hell do we ever even fight these things, I just run away every time". The one on the way to Kakkariko/Hateno was masterclass placement. And the first time I ran into one of the big golem things? I freaked out, "there are open world bosses all over?!?!?!"

Damn I'm about to pick this game up, DAMN IT lol

Something else about the story of this game.
It is just so forgettable to me. The story in Link's awakening is a better story. That one makes up ask questions about the nature of life (at least in their world, and right vs wrong). The only thing that I am asking in this game is.. wait what these people don't age at all. Is like 100 years like 10 years for them.

I can definitely see why people may not see it as their cup of tea. I put ten hours into it, dropped it, picked it back up randomly, and then proceeded to binge it for 100 hours. If it meshes with you, its superb, but I can get not having that spark in the first place for a variety of reasons.

Bro, what? There's always something over the horizon everywhere you go, and tons of people and places to run into.

It's maybe not one of the busiest or cluttered open worlds, but to say it's empty is pretty much lying. The world has a lot of life and personality, with a lot of it coming from the people you talk to on your adventure.

I absolutely loved it, and honestly think the lion's share of complaints stem from people that just couldn't get over the notion that weapons aren't special and that trying to horde weapons ruins the core gameplay loop. Just use your weapons, you will always find more weapons.

But there are legitimate downsides. Motion control puzzle segments are all bad, but thankfully they are few and far between. While there are loads of puzzle solving, the breakdown into shrines and samey divine beasts results in not really having memorable dungeoneering compared to past games in the series. Enemies are fantastic and defined, but with a disappointing lack of number. The upgrade system for armor is also pretty vanilla without any depth and needlessly prolonged (as in the process of upgrading each item, one at a time, one upgrade at a time, each with a semi-skippable cutscene), and the core cooking mechanic kind of gets broken once you realize the fairly basic recipes for max health+ dishes.

But the positives far outweigh the negatives. Core gameplay loop is fun and varied. The world is expansive expansive great. The scenery is beautiful. The physics is great, and there's just always so much to do.
