The counter-protesters were expecting the Oath Keepers to be there, but they weren't. Some random truck was near the protest, and the counter-protestors took the flag that was on the truck and burned it.

Independent voters aren't the ones that are swinging the election, and if images of a couple of people burning the flag and protesting are enough to get them voting for Republicans then they were already Republicans at heart.
