bad guy =/= villain. the villain in beauty and the beast would be the witch

The witch is pretty much the only reason the prince stops being such an asshole, and the entirety of Beauty and the Beast is about that redemption story. Had he not been cursed, he'd have spent his life surrounded by sycophants that tolerated him being a douche because of the status it brought them. He'd have married some princess or other, knocked her up a few times with kids he largely ignored except as needed to groom them into inheriting his legacy of dickdom, then eventually died having improved nothing about the world around him.

Because he was cursed, though, everyone he might ever have valued stopped caring about him completely. He lived a miserable existence and would have died sad and alone if not for the fact that he met somebody who saw some potential in him to be a half-decent person and managed to beat him into shape. He would never have given Belle a second glance if he weren't cursed (she was just some peasant girl, after all), but because he was, he had that opportunity to redeem himself, to the benefit of everyone.

Arguably, the Beast is the villain. The primary conflict that drives the story is everyone around him clashing with the less pleasant aspects of his personality, and ultimately triumphing. Gaston is a turbodink who stirs up trouble that exacerbates that conflict, but I would agree that he's not really the actual antagonist in the story, because he's not the one providing that central conflict (though he does act to represent what the Beast would be like if not for the curse, acting as a character foil). The witch definitely is not, though. She's the only reason the central conflict ever finds any sort of resolution.

Zeus posted...
But again, there's no reason he can't be with her in Disney's Hunchback. In the novel, he'd be breaking a vow of chastity. Judges don't have vows of chastity (and it's not like he's married). The line is a complete throwaway as a result, because it doesn't work.

Frollo sleeping with Esmeralda would be roughly akin to a Grand Dragon sleeping with a black woman. He's based so much of his fundamental identity and place in society on the premise that gypsies are subhuman, ungodly filth that his obsession with her is absolutely a violation of his fundamental beliefs, both in terms of what he's convinced himself about what God's will is and in terms of his public credibility. The problem is not that he's attracted to a woman, it's that he's attracted to a gypsy woman, especially one that has made a name for herself by being openly defiant of the order he's attempting to impose.

It's also worth noting that, while a judge may not actually be a member of the church and not have any vows of chastity or anything to worry about, the Catholic church was such a major part of the power structure in 15th century France that straying too far from what the church commanded would basically be social and career suicide for any judge. Vows or no vows, a "sinful" judge (by whatever metric was being used) would not be accepted by much of anyone. To that end, a judge worrying about being "sinful" is absolutely believable.

And yeah, covid, for most people, is very similar to the flu. I've known multiple people who had covid. It's very similar and often more mild than the flu.

You know, except for the part where it killed ~20x more Americans in the past year than influenza typically does, as well as having vastly more impact on those that survive serious cases than the flu ever does (when was the last time you heard about somebody needing to learn to walk again because they were hospitalized with the flu?), despite unprecedented public health measures that were enough to all but eliminate influenza entirely.

Around April or May 2020, you could say that people that compared Covid to influenza were being naively optimistic. By then, it was pretty clearly apparent that it was a far, far more serious disease, but there was still some small amount of hope that it would respond well enough to enhanced public health measures that it might end up being at least somewhat comparable. It's now July 2021. There's no longer any reason to believe the two are even remotely comparable. Anyone saying they are is either wilfully spouting obvious falsehoods because they feel they have something to gain by being transparently disingenuous, or is so genuinely clueless and disconnected from obvious empirical reality that absolutely nothing they have to say on the matters of medicine, epidemiology, immunology, or basic goddamn common sense should ever be listened to. There are no other options.

The lack of actual dungeons was a real bummer tbh. It had some good concepts, but felt lacking overall.

Conceptually, I like the idea of splitting the puzzles up into shrines instead of continuous dungeons, but the combination of the aesthetic uniformity and the sheer number of shrines that were just copy+pasted combat trials (the first 1-2 of which at a given tier were reasonably challenging, but quickly became a trivial slog) made it all more tedious than I would have liked. It also didn't help that you had basically all the available tools to work with almost immediately, so most of the game's puzzles don't rely on learning any new, interesting mechanics.

dragon504 posted...
Weapon durability was a really stupid mechanic they added as well.

I can understand going for the "you've just woken up and you have nothing! Try to survive!" theme, and it works well enough for creating that sense, but that sense really doesn't last past the Plateau and handling durability just ends up being more of a chore than anything (a chore that undermined the excitement of finding any powerful new equipment, no less). Scrapping the mechanic entirely at any point in the game would have felt weird, but there should at least have been some way to work around it (not counting the infinite durability upgrade for the Master Sword from the DLC, because that's just too specific).

Really, that's a problem that plagues a lot of survival games (and is generally even worse in games that tack on survival mechanics instead of properly building around them): For the sake of providing a sense of progression, the survival mechanics become gradually less demanding as the game goes on, until eventually they're nothing more than an occasional annoyance that contributes nothing of value (namely, no more sense of desperation) but can't just be eliminated entirely because there's no plausible explanation for it. If done well, either it remains a significant issue throughout the entire game that adds a layer of challenge to whatever you're doing (i.e. air in Subnautica giving a time limit to anything you try to do outside of a sub/base), or there's an option available to make the problem disappear in a way that's plausible in-universe (i.e. adding depth modules to subs in Subnautica so your maximum exploration depth isn't so limited by air). There's a delicate balancing act between creating an enjoyable gameplay experience and creating an enjoyable atmosphere, further complicated by not being able to switch abruptly between the two without disrupting the game's immersion.

I don't think it ever singled out nested quotes, but I'm pretty sure you can still only have seven quote blocks per post. Nested quotes did, however, stop displaying all of their content after ~3 tiers, unless you specifically opened them. I would have thought that would be enough, but I guess it keeps stacking them indefinitely in the background and potentially puts an unreasonable strain on the site (not really, but this is GameFAQs' technical expertise we're talking about).

is it wrong for a male to enter the women's changing room at a swimming pool? and then is it also wrong for him to get naked there?

Getting naked would qualify as indecent exposure, since he's not explicitly permitted to get naked there. Simply entering would not inherently be wrong, but there aren't many possible non-nefarious reasons for him to enter, and entering for nefarious reasons is wrong (by simple virtue of being nefarious).

Sahuagin posted...
I didn't say "man" I said "male"

but regardless what is the difference between the two situations? ie: why is it wrong for a "man" to enter?

Honestly, I don't see much by way of inherent moral wrong in either situation. Nudity is morally neutral and inflicts no inherent harm. The only harm or moral foul arises in how it is applied or treated, which is a set of conscious decisions from the people involved in the situation. In truth, desegregating facilities like these wouldn't be a problem at all.

In practice, the issue boils down to expectations: You don't expect a dong in the ladies' room, so when that happens, people feel uncomfortable. The thing is, you also don't expect a full-body tattoo of Spongebob. Somebody shows up in one of these spas with a full-body Spongebob tattoo, though, and you aren't going to get a public announcement about how her daughter was "scandalized" and angry protests over the "incident." Why the different standards? Why are penises so special and horrible and unexpected that seeing one warrants such a gross overreaction? Simply being unexpected doesn't explain that, especially where you're significantly more likely to see a trans woman at a spa than you are any countless number of other specific unusual aesthetic variations.

You're trying to justify this by saying that butt cheeks are a public health hazard. That is both completely baseless (her hands are almost certainly less sanitary than her butt cheeks, because hands are nasty and butt cheeks really don't do anything) and has absolutely nothing to do with the airline's decision. If you believe otherwise, you're welcome to provide evidence to that effect.

It's probably more the fact her butt cheeks would be touching the seat. If you look at the link, you can see how the kind of jean shorts she wears look like from behind... and there's a lot of behind there.

Besides damaging the seats, there's a public health issue there.

Admittedly, I've never pooped while being a woman, so perhaps it works differently for them, but in my personal experience, I don't usually have poop come out of my butt cheeks. In fact, nothing in my experience makes me think that the skin exposed by booty shorts would any less sanitary than any other skin. But maybe that's just me.

People bring that up a lot in the context of all the bathroom bills floating around, but here's the thing: Trans women have been using women's bathrooms for decades, and that's never been a problem. Being a creep is already grounds to throw someone out and ban them from using the place, regardless of their alleged gender identity. There's no need to bar people from coming in because they *might* be a creep.

Didn't see it. (Keep in mind I have a *lot* of notifications at any given moment; last Friday I was up to 120 notifications.) However, more importantly, the data provided seems to be based on *old* studies. And that's been the biggest issue when people have been trying to compare the mRNA vaccines to the viral vector vaccines, because the studies that are often STILL being cited are much older when there was less variation. Hell, one of your links was published around the time the Delta was first appearing. You *really* can't rely on old research with something like this, which is why the newer research is what really matters.

Alright, so let's find some more recent data on Delta-specific efficacy:

Pfizer (July 7):
https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/pfizer-vaccine-protection-takes-a-hit-as-delta-variant-spreads-israeli-government-says-1.5499682

UK: 79% in June, 96% this month
Canada: 87% a week ago
Israel: 64% in June, with the caveat that it was too soon to say anything definitive

Moderna (July 8):
https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-variant-covid-vaccine-effectiveness-protection-pfizer-moderna-astrazeneca-2021-7

Canada: 72% after one dose (insufficient data to determine 2-dose efficacy), a week ago

Janssen (July 1):
https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/pfizer-moderna-jj-vaccines-efficacy-as-delta-variant-concerns-rise/2419162/

US: 60% (no date)

---

Huh. Look at that. Available estimates fail to disprove the hypothesis that the Janssen shot is less effective than the two-dose ones, even against the delta variant. Heck, as a bonus, there's talk of recommending that J&J recipients get an mRNA booster shot for added protection (https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/booster-may-be-needed-jj-shot-delta-variant-spreads-some-experts-already-taking-2021-06-25/), though that hasn't solidified into anything concrete yet. And then there's the well-established fact that it's less effective overall than the others, even comparing first doses. Naturally, all of these are still fairly preliminary estimates, so they may change (lambda may also shake things up), but the alternative is a baseless random guess, which is hardly more credible.

As I've said on several occasions now, I wish J&J were a better option than it is, given the convenience (the blood clot issue generally seems to be worse than the myocarditis one, but both are pretty negligible risks), but it just isn't. It's a whole lot better than nothing, and that makes it a great choice for regions where the infrastructure isn't available to transport and store the others, but if alternatives are available, you're going to be better off with them. There's very little point in actively seeking out J&J unless you need to travel on such short notice that waiting the ~6 weeks a two-dose schedule requires isn't feasible (though these vaccines have been available for long enough now that that's just a failure of planning on your part).

First off, I'm not sure what "responsible habits" are going to be learned from an allowance when a child doesn't have to worry about buying things essential to their lives.

Mostly "if you buy stuff you don't really want, you won't have money left for stuff you do really want," coming from the experience of running out of money and not being able to buy stuff they want. The only way to really learn how finite money is is to run out of it; being unable to afford something that you could have afforded with more responsible spending is an experience that shouldn't just be hypothetical unless you theorycrafted it out long before real stakes came into play (in which case you've already learned the necessary lessons and are already responsible enough to handle your own money, making it a moot point).

Zeus posted...
Most of my friends back then who were just given money growing up were notorious profligates who were constantly asking to borrow money. Why? Because they were never taught how to manage money.

That sounds more like the problem is that they were given money on demand, not simply that they were given money. When I talk about giving kids an allowance, I'm not talking about giving them money whenever they ask for it, I'm talking about giving them a fixed amount of money at a given interval. I agree that giving kids money without imposing any limits is a bad idea that doesn't discourage irresponsible spending, which is why I'm not in any way advocating for that.

Ultimately, we're comparing "I will set aside $5 per week that you can draw from with my approval" to "I will give you $5 per week to use as you wish, though I will provide advice as I feel is appropriate." The former shows kids what their parents' idea of responsible spending looks like, but doesn't offer any room for them to figure anything out for themselves. The latter shows them what their parents' idea of responsible spending looks like (in the form of the advice given), but does let them figure stuff out for themselves and form their own sense of the value of a dollar (which will and should differ from their parents'). It's (hypothetically) the same amount of money they get, the former just protects them from feeling stupid if they waste it on something useless.

A fair chunk of the scientific community will say that there's no safe exposure limit for any carcinogen, which means that literally any amount of exposure can end up causing cancer, but most of that just boils down to how impossibly difficult it is to pin down any single low-level exposure event as the cause of a cancer that develops 40 years later. There are a few exceptions to that (asbestos is one, since it causes a very specific, readily-identifiable cancer), but for the most part, low-level exposure to any carcinogen probably won't hurt you. Try to avoid it wherever you can, but don't lose sleep over forgetting a mask this one time.

In colder weather, it's less fun to go into the fridge, but then you get to enjoy coming back out into the heat (especially in a kitchen setting), which is always nice.

Now, organizing stuff in walk-in freezers? Especially when you didn't expect to do so and it's the middle of summer so you don't have a jacket with you? That's decidedly less pleasant, and needs to happen in bursts of a few minutes at a time.

Not that kids -- and I'm talking pre-teens -- should just have money anyway. Their parents should be acting as a custodian for any money they might have at that age.

The whole point of an allowance is to allow kids to make their own financial decisions, and that includes mistakes. You just give them such a slow drip feed of money that any mistakes they do make will be mostly inconsequential (to you, at least), so they can learn from them harmlessly. There's plenty of room in there to provide advice as well, but if you just dictate how they spend "their" money until they turn 18, that's just going to result in an adult that hasn't developed any financial management skills but suddenly has to make real decisions..

Whether or not it should be part of their policy, whether or not it should be part of everyone's policies, whether or not this (or any other hypothetical) person is reasonable to be so upset by this... There are a lot of dissenting opinions on all of those points, opinions which are coming into play in much of the anti-trans legislation being devised in the US as we speak. This is an active social issue, and there's plenty to discuss around it.

I can agree with that, though I don't know if there's any actual grounds for charges. It's not defamation against the spa because this is in fact consistent with their policies, and I don't know that there's any basis for holding here responsible for assaults committed by other people. Obviously, lying about it is bad and I'd love to see punishment doled out accordingly, but there may not be a legal avenue for that.

The problem is, there aren't enough "good jobs" for everyone, or even close to it.

There will never be enough for everyone, no, but there could be more than there are. A major reason many jobs continue to be miserable is because owners and managers have no incentive to improve conditions so long as people will put up with them because it's better than being homeless. Take away that threat, and you're left with either improving the conditions or providing more compensation (or both), otherwise nobody will work for you. The hidden third option is to remove the need for people altogether, meaning such a shift drives innovation and development in the automation field, but that isn't an overnight solution.

OSHA has prescribed limits for chronic and acute exposures (<1 ppm average over an 8-hour shift, <5 for a 15-minute period), but that's generally based on the assumption that somebody will be exposed to that several days a week for a few decades. You still should try to avoid that 5 ppm limit in general (read: wear a mask and cut the stuff outside whenever possible), and I can't tell you exactly what exposure level you've experienced here, but I would guess that it's unlikely that this single exposure event has significantly increased your risk of developing cancer.

If it has, though, odds are you've got a couple decades before it shows up. Carcinogens generally don't work very fast unless it's a particularly intense exposure.

If they have money (which they generally will, if they get an allowance), there's no reason they shouldn't be able to store that in a bank account and use it directly from there. I think I was like 8 or 9 when I got my first debit card, though I generally just used cash because I couldn't be bothered to deposit my allowance into the bank.

Nichtcrawler X posted...
Still the better way to get them to understand the value, have some of it physically. A number on an account is just that, a number.

A number on a piece of paper (especially American money, which isn't even colour-coded) is also just a number. Whether they're using cash or debit, they're going to have to consider whether or not they have enough money to make a purchase. Longer-term considerations like how much they'll have left over and whether or not they'll be able to afford something else they want in the future are equally abstract regardless of how tangible the money is (future expenses are inherently abstract, so you have to think abstractly about current funds to construct a relationship between them).

Thinking abstractly can be hard for kids, but I know my parents were teaching me from a very early age (like 4 or 5) to consider the prices of things I want in terms of how many weeks' allowance it would take to afford them, even before they started actually giving me that allowance (basically just saying I was entitled to a certain amount of money per week, then spending it on my behalf when I wanted to buy something, provided I'd saved up enough). I was exceptionally good at math as a kid (that was years before most would be taught multiplication), so my experience isn't necessarily representative of everyone else's capabilities, but it's nonetheless very possible to teach kids how money works without needing to put physical money in their hands.

Hopefully the unemployment boost proved that once and for all. People will gladly not work if it's an option, or even take a pay cut to not work instead of work, as long as it's enough to survive on.

In pretty much every minimum income/UBI experiment that's been conducted, it's been found that people do ultimately end up working, they just use the breathing room provided by the guaranteed subsistence income to pursue the training they need to get jobs they actually want (instead of spending all their time working terrible low-paying jobs that don't leave them with enough time or money to improve their skills), even if those jobs don't pay enough to live off of. That hasn't happened with the Covid unemployment boost, but that's also a temporary thing (and therefore not something to plan a career around), plus the nature of the pandemic has made changing jobs a pretty risky idea.

I generally assume Harry Potter whenever I see a 7-member ranking. Specifically the books, since there are 8 movies. This ranking also seems to line up reasonably well with HP, though I'd put 6 at the very bottom instead.

I just got my second shot two days ago, so certainly not. Even once I hit the 2-week period, though, mask mandates are still in effect around here (as of the 3rd, my province was 71.8% with one dose, but only 28.3% with two, though I expect that's gone up quite a bit since then because there have been a lot of second doses made available in the past two weeks), and I'm not enough of a self-important prick to argue with minimum-wage store staff over something they can't control, especially when it's something as trivial as wearing a mask. Once they're lifted, I'll probably stop, but then it'll be a judgement call based on personal comfort levels with local vaccinations rates and whatever concerns I may have about whatever variants are floating about at that point.

A jaded part of me wonders if they don't do stuff like that as a PR stunt because they know that any design will struggle to get over with fans so they pitch a really awful one at first for people to complain about and then make a more tolerable version.

Not impossible, but that doesn't seem like the most financially viable move. Completely reanimating the main character is not a small undertaking, and as much as the animators are paid peanuts and likely got no overtime compensation for the long hours they had to put in to pull off the redesign so quickly, I would think that would still be so expensive that that would be a very significant gamble. Unless, of course, they actually made the movie with the final design and just made the trailer with the manhog. I could see them pulling something like that.

That said, as much as gamers are notoriously hard to please, stuff like Detective Pikachu didn't get much by way of backlash for its character designs, given that they stayed true to the originals (as much as they looked kinda creepy in the realistic setting). I don't think it's so difficult to do a decent adaptation that they really need to resort to tricks like that.

Pfizer-Moderna here (as of yesterday afternoon), second dose has been much worse. First dose was just a sore arm for a couple days. This time, my arm is much more sore, I've been generally very fatigued, woke up today aching pretty much all over, and have cycled between feeling feverish and feeling nauseous all day. It's improving now, so I'm hoping I should be more or less alright tomorrow, but I've been out of commission for most of the day.

If you're concerned about your kids being exposed to nudity, then maybe don't take them places where it's acceptable for people to be nude. It's also pretty fucked up that some of those images are assuming trans people at spas are just automatically pedophiles.

You see the same assumption come up in the bathroom debate. Never mind that trans people are overwhelmingly more commonly the victims of sexual assault in bathrooms than the perpetrators, as soon as people hear about trans people going into the "wrong" bathroom, they assume it's to be a pedophile and not just to poop.

I haven't seen it, but yeah, my understanding is that it did turn out reasonably well. The original design for Sonic, however, did thoroughly demonstrate Hollywood's tendency to say "we know better what fans of your IP want to see than you do" and make completely ridiculous changes as a result.

Gender reassignment surgery should be something that must be covered in a future UHC plan, no one wants to see a woman with a shlong.

Regardless of whether or not they can afford it, people spend at least a couple years transitioning non-surgically before undergoing genital reconstruction. A crucial part of the transitioning process is experimenting with a new identity to see if it helps the dysphoria. If it doesn't, proceeding with irreversible changes is a bad idea because that's not actually solving their problems. I don't disagree that transitioning should be covered (gender dysphoria being a serious life-threatening condition and all), but justifying that by saying that you don't want to see intermediate states of transitioning is both ignorant of the process and thoroughly intolerant of trans people.

It's as though it isn't plot relevant. Play a game that's actually about romance and weirdly it's shown a lot.

Eeyup. If romance is central to the plot, you do get depictions of intimacy, even in more moderate forms. If it isn't, there's not much gameplay value to having cuddle breaks between artillery bombardments, so it gets left out.

Bonus points where billionaires don't actually see any tangible benefit from savings on their taxes. When you get to that point, commerce pretty much just becomes an idle game: You enjoy watching the numbers go up, but they don't mean anything and don't let you do anything more except make the numbers go up even faster in the future.

Cutscenes are only part of what make games enjoyable. If he enjoys the gameplay, there's no reason to skip out on that just because the cutscenes aren't fun.
