Nothing that's got an all-time best discount has jumped out at me as being something I want to play immediately, and given the state of my backlog, I don't particularly want to buy anything unless it's either an exceptional deal or I have immediate plans to play it.

Eh, that's debatable. If you could have derived just as much happiness and enjoyment from something cheaper, then there's really no point in spending the additional money, meaning it's been wasted. In practice, though, that's often pretty difficult to predict, and the assessment can change completely as time goes on (especially with something like a game system, whose value typically increases until it stops being supported), so there's little sense in judging people for it now.

I don't think the Death Note is capable of that.

It's capable of exerting pretty much complete control over somebody, provided that series of commands ultimately ends in their death. Light exploited that by writing his own name in the book to wipe his memory during one of his more elaborate schemes. The series doesn't explore it, but there's really no reason it couldn't be used for good. Heck, even within Light's idea of eliminating criminals, he could have simply used it to compel them to stop being criminals and live out the remainder of their natural lives as upstanding members of society. That's still ethically questionable because of that whole "free will" thing people seem to like so much, but it's generally a more positive outcome than murdering everyone. But Light was an arrogant teenager with a god complex, not somebody interested in minimizing collateral damage while fixing the world's problems, so he went the serial killer route.

I think any Death Note used in any capacity turns the person into an evil douchebag no matter how good the original intentions are.

What if it's used to bestow good fortune on somebody for the remainder of their natural life by spelling out a never-ending stream of positive events that will happen to them until they die peacefully in their sleep at the age of 120 (presumably dying for some other reason before then, since iirc you can't extend somebody's life past when they'd normally die by using the book)?

Why would you even need this? Internet works fine without it.

Depends on your wireless router. Wired is always going to be faster and more reliable than wireless, so if wireless is proving troublesome, wired is your best bet.

Of course, you can buy USB ethernet adapters for it that render that particular feature unnecessary, but it's still handy to have it built-in.

No 4K output? Weird...

There's not a lot of benefit to this half-generation idea some platform makers have been trying out. Releasing a more powerful system sounds like a neat idea at first glance, but actually taking advantage of that power means either developing a lesser version of a given game that will play on the old version (or, more likely, developing the game for the weaker version and adding some enhancements for the new one, either of which is a substantial amount of extra work), or making the game not function on the old one (reducing the portion of the install base you can access). We've seen this with the New 3DS (it had one exclusive game and a small handful that had extra features, but there was virtually no reason to develop with it in mind), the Xbone/PS4 remodels (Cyberpunk being one of the highest-profile failures of the model), and probably others I can't recall.

Smaller upgrades sound tempting, but without developers supporting them (which takes additional resources on their parts, for little gain), they're rarely all that beneficial, and ultimately just discourage people from being early adopters. Improvements to things like form factor and battery life already discourage early adoption, but when it becomes a matter of "you can't play this game without upgrading," that just breeds a whole lot of ill will.

You can improve the world by killing certain black people (at least, working from the assumption that Light's approach wasn't wrong, since there's plenty of room to debate that but that's not the discussion at hand). Same as you can improve the world by killing certain white people, or certain Asian people, or certain people of a diverse assortment of ethnicities. It's not racist to recognize that some of the people whose deaths would improve the world happen to be black.

I mean, I think he deserves some credit for managing to find people dredging up 30-year-old videos of a scientist most people have never heard of making comments on the HIV epidemic (comments amounting to "it's not an epidemic," which should really give people with the benefit of hindsight some pause) and interpreting those comments as a commentary on the Covid pandemic. It's been a year of some very impressive mental gymnastics from the folks that want to believe Covid isn't a big deal, but even with all that competition, I must say this is quite a remarkable display.

That said, I hadn't actually realized that Fauci had played a role in convincing the public that HIV was more than just a gay disease. If anything, that just makes me respect him more, so kudos for... doing the exact opposite of what you wanted, I guess?

maybe not that but they might think wow trans people like to trick people into kissing/having sex with them

which is absolutely an attitude that contributes to violence against trans people

Yep. The trope of trans deceptions is arguably the main reason people hate them (especially trans women) so much, including being the entire basis for the persistence of the "trans panic" defense in places that still accept as a justifiable reason to murder trans people (most of the US). Sure, one joke in one movie isn't exactly going to single-handedly set the trans rights movement back by decades, but it's nevertheless part of a body of media that inspired and reflects a culture of anti-trans hatred.

Does this mean you can't like the movie? Of course not. It just means that, if you're paying attention to the world around you and how people are affected by depictions in media, you should recognize that that particular scene really isn't okay, even if it was acceptable at the time it was published. You should also recognize that some people are going to be put off of the movie over it, and respect that instead of telling them to stop being so dramatic over something that legitimizes their murder.

Meanwhile Australia's vaccine rate is 25% for 1-dose, 7% for full-vax and they only have 488 active cases in a population of 26m >_>

Kinda tears apart your overly simplistic, ignorant narrative.

Australia also kept their case numbers low with measures that would have had the science-hating 2/5 of the US engaging in full-on armed rebellion had they been enacted in the US. Yes, it's overly simplistic to think purely in terms of vaccination rates, but in a country where a virus runs as rampant as Covid has in the US, vaccinations are pretty much the only way to wrangle it, short of welding everyone into their houses for a month. There's also very substantial overlap between those who are refusing to be vaccinated and those who actively undermined and worked against other infection control measures, further contributing to the lingering case count, so it's still a reasonably accurate statement even if we acknowledge that there's more than just vaccinations at play.

It is indeed. Citing the body of evidence upon which they're basing their decisions, however, is just good empirical reasoning. By extension, trusting their conclusions instead of personally researching the evidence they are using is generally going to be a reasonable way to save time, since if their evidence isn't a valid support of their point, it's usually easy enough to pick it apart that somebody else will have done it for me. If skeptical, however, I (or anyone else) can go looking through their citations and form dissenting opinions as needed.

Are you going to elaborate, or will I have to do extra work to make sure I cover all possible misinterpretations of Mullis' comments so as to minimize the chance of missing your particular ones?

Should she be sued for having anything other than grass growing on her property? For driving a car that might harm the neighbourhood's image? Hell, given the anti-Asian racism running rampant following Covid, one could suggest that the mere fact that she's an Asian-American hurts her neighbours' property values (since there are many people who wouldn't want an Asian neighbour). Should she move out to be considerate of that?

Let people exercise some individuality in decorating their own homes. There are more than enough cookie-cutter suburbs out there governed by totalitarian HOA's for the people that get off on exerting that kind of control over their neighbours' lives. If that's what her neighbours want, they can sell their houses to people that don't hate fun and move to one of them.

Of course, all of this is without pointing out that you're generally quite defensive of people that come under fire for flying swastikas and confederate flags on their houses, citing freedom of expression and whatnot. How interesting that property values don't seem to matter there, yet are of the utmost importance here.
