I'm pretty sure if you gave someone a sweetened biscuit, they wouldn't go "wtf, this is a scone". The texture is more immediately apparent, even if you messed with the proportions.

Of course, I'm from the South, so we're more particular about our biscuits.

This is true. Formal definitions and practical definitions often don't really line up, especially when it comes to food (which invariably has tons of regional cultural norms surrounding it, which aren't going to be reflected in definitions being handed down by some "culinary authority" in another region).

Just because you have your shots doesn't mean that you can't spread Covid-19 to others who can't get the shots for medical reasons (such as cancer patients, etc.)

Actually, the primary takeaway from the CDC's announcement that fully-immunized people don't need masks is that that doesn't seem to be a major risk. There were a lot of questions about it, which kept them from updating recommendations sooner, but fully vaccinated people don't seem to have enough of a chance to transmit the disease for masking to be necessary (which is fantastic news).

Not necessarily (bear in mind that this is talking about "pudding" in the sense of pastries. I know the difference between cake and custard). Is it?

Generally. Most IP's that are popular enough to be worth adapting have done enough world-building that it's not that hard to make a story that actually fits into the universe and forms a plausible part of the series. The Mario Bros movie was very much not a good adaptation, and part of that can be blamed on the fact that there's really no actual story to work with in Mario games (especially in 1993), but Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and M&L games have all shown that it's perfectly possible to tell an actual story without reinventing the universe. There's no reason a movie can't do the same.

Studios' repeated failure to do that is not because it's impossible, it's because they'd rather just shoehorn a pre-existing story template into the IP they purchased and hope that brand recognition is enough to carry it to profitability.

It's because most film directors have an innate sense of superiority and pretentious dismissal of "video games" as anything worthwhile, so they always feel like they can "improve" video game stories.

Pretty much. Toss in executives that have no understanding whatsoever of the source material that want certain things shoehorned in because they know they're popular, and you get something that's barely recognizable.

Honestly, I can respect this as a reason to avoid getting the shot (at least until after the Olympics). This close to the competition, Olympic athletes are in a position where taking a couple unplanned days off from training (especially days off that will consist mostly of lying around doing nothing) could completely undermine everything they've done to prepare over the last five years, and there's a good chance getting the shot (mostly the second one, but also possibly the first) will force them to do that. It's certainly suboptimal, public health-wise, but Olympians are such a tiny portion of the population that I don't think that's overly consequential.

They should, however, definitely be isolating for two weeks upon returning to their home countries if they aren't vaccinated. This is very high-risk travel.

The fact that they're both ethnic is pretty secondary to identifying them as similar.

Place we went to had a sign that masks were not required for vaccinated people. Probably about 30% of the people were wearing masks.

Which pretty much tells you everything you need to know about why the CDC's announcement was stupid. On that day, only around 30-31% of Americans were actually fully vaccinated. Obviously, your sample likely wasn't perfectly representative of the general population, but if everyone had listened to the converse of the CDC's announcement (that is, "everyone that isn't fully vaccinated needs to keep wearing masks"), you'd expect the exact opposite of what you saw.

Not inaccurate. Biscuits tend to be flakier than scones, but the underlying method is virtually identical and there's no reason you can't have a denser biscuit or a flakier scone, if that's the texture you want to go with your desired sweetness. The key difference in how they're defined is the sugar, not the texture.

My last apartment was on the first floor (by unit numbering, anyway), and to get there from the front door, I had to go up some stairs, then down even more because it was in the basement and the first two floors were handled like a split-level.

There were certainly aspects of Hillary's loss that were not handled gracefully, and more than a few examples of questionable and even outright corrupt behaviour surrounding it, but absolutely everything about Trump's loss was far, far worse.

Humans practice biparental care, so there's relatively little difference in reproductive investment, plus reproductive investment is irrelevant to non-reproductive sex. Biology has very little to do with girls having an easier time getting laid. That comes almost entirely from centuries of social norms that demean and punish women for extramarital sex while giving men a free pass.

Well, vaccines typically are studied for 2 years minimum.

So right off the bat, you're walking back that "5 years" figure. Good to know.

Typically, vaccines (and other drugs) progress through the stages of clinical trials in sequence. Given the urgency of these vaccines, those stages were overlapped and conducted at least partially in parallel, which saved a large amount of time. These vaccines were also able to move much, much faster than normal through the processes of securing funding and finding participants for their studies, since funding was readily available and there was no shortage of volunteers. And then when it came time for actual approval, rather than having to wait in line behind thousands of other hopeful products while the bureaucrats worked their way through the obligatory red tape, vaccine candidates have been rushed to the front of the line and treated as higher-priority than everything else.

Yes, the timeline has been accelerated, but pretty much all of that has been a result of streamlining the administrative side of things, not cutting corners in the science. Every metric that is normally met for approving a drug has been met here. That data is available, if you want to evaluate it for yourself.

I also feel that I should point out that development began on the mRNA vaccines last January, meaning a solid 18 months has passed between that and when you received yours. That's not actually that far shy of the two years you're treating as the minimum.

OhhhJa posted...

Never mind that "long-term effects" usually translates to "cancer," which generally takes decades to manifest after exposure and also I haven't heard anything about there being anything in these vaccines that is carcinogenic at these doses.
