Remember the tombstone in the original Final Fantasy that read "here lies Link"?

No, because in the original US version of Final Fantasy, it didn't say that. It said "Here lies Erdrick" (aka, the character from Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior). It wasn't until later translations that they changed it back to Link.

But either way, it was itself a reference to a tombstone in Zelda II - in the original Japanese, it said "Here lies Loto" (aka, the original Japanese name of Erdrick).

Does wasting your breath trying to talk to people who are either too ignorant, too stubborn, or too much of an asshole to ever really care about anything you say other than as a way to attack you somehow make either your life or the world a better place?

I know children of the Internet Age may have a very hard time understanding this concept, but sometimes, you don't need to project your opinions to every human being on Earth to somehow validate yourself.

They are the same thing.

They're objectively not.

Ignore is basically making the person who is annoying you cease to exist in your world, block is making yourself cease to exist in their world. Similar outcome, two entirely different mechanics.

You can argue over whether or not they should be CALLED something different from what they're called now, but that's not really the same thing.

The Irony is that the TARDIS would have told The Doctor where they were the entire time It was a post-apocalyptic earth.

Ehh, I can almost forgive that because this isn't the first time they've done that plot point:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Planet

...but at least in that case, they at least tried to justify it by implying the planet (and the entire solar system) had been moved out of its natural orbit and relocated somewhere else.

Though that's also an implicit negative of its own - it's indicative that they're so lacking in ideas that they're going back to the old series to steal premises. And it's not even like this is the first time Doctor Who has done a bit of an anvilicious "Hey, if you don't stop polluting the future is going to suck" moral, since they did that in the last season of the original show ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Curse_of_Fenric ), so they aren't even being original with that.

But blocking is censoring other people because you're scared of them seeing you post.

It's a shitty blocking system because literally no other forum even does blocking like that.

It's mostly to prevent harassment.

If someone follows you into every single topic to shit on you no matter what you're actually posting, you can ignore them but everyone else is still going to see them attacking you, and they can essentially accuse you of all manner of things that you now can't defend yourself against because you can't see them. You won't even be able to mark them for harassment (which would be perfectly valid) because you don't even know it's happening.

The idea of block is that you essentially remove yourself from them even knowing you exist, with the assumption that they'll eventually get bored of posting about you and move on with their lives.

In practice, it doesn't really work because most of the really shitty trolls or obsessed harassers have multiple accounts anyway, so they'll just log into a different account to see what you're up to. Or will just make shitty little snide comments about you every now and then in entirely unrelated topics just because they know you're still out there even if they can't see you.

I stopped watching the show a few seasons back, and I'd been watching since 1983 or so. And have every single serial that still exists from the original series on DVD.

Moffat as showrunner really ground the show into the dirt, and the hope was that things would improve under Chibnall, but if anything they've gotten worse.

At this point I'm not even sure a new showrunner who wound up being completely awesome could salvage things.

Some of the books were good too, but then Disney happened.

About 6 good books lost and 180+ terrible ones burned to the ground really isn't a housecleaning to be mourned. Or one that wasn't effectively both inevitable and necessary.

(especially when the original plan seemed to be to try and salvage the only worthwhile bits out of the EU in the new continuity anyway)

Though that being said...

Entity13 posted...
So rip canon

"I don't read that stuff. I haven't read any of the novels. I don't know anything about that world. That's a different world than my world. When I said [other people] could make their own Star Wars stories, we decided that, like Star Trek, we would have two universes: My universe and then this other one." --- George Lucas

No matter how hard Lucasfilm tried to lie about multiple levels of canon to trick fanboys, the EU was never really "canon" in any meaningful way, except inasmuch as it related to itself. Which really isn't canonicity as much as it is consistency.

The EU was effectively "official fanfiction". Sure, it had the official branding on the books. Maybe you enjoyed it. But it was never really "real" as part of the official universe, in the sense that anyone doing new movies was ever going to feel obligated to pay any attention to it, Disney, Lucas, or otherwise.

Lucas' real opinions of the EU were pretty obvious, like when he found out about a popular EU character, and decided to add her to the movies, and her sole role was to get shot. That was basically Lucas saying "Ehh, fuck your EU." The EU thrived because Lucas was mostly disinterested in anything other than what he was doing personally, which meant he didn't care about the books because they "didn't count" anyway.

It didn't really matter WHO ultimately wound up making Episode VII-IX, every single post-RotJ EU book was absolutely doomed the moment anyone decided they were going to make those movies.

Empathy isn't a choice, otherwise we wouldn't consider ethics so fundamental.

Empathy also isn't the ability you're necessarily using most of the time when you experience fictional media anyway. Sympathy is, and that's a different thing.

That being said, you're both right in this case. It's up to the narrative in question to provide characters you feel inclined to engage with, sympathize with, and otherwise care about, but it's also up to the player (or viewer, or reader, etc) to be willing to engage with the narrative in the first place, and not just, say, skip through every cut-scene, skim every dialogue line, and generally not pay attention to the story or the characters to the point where it doesn't matter how well written they are.

2019 was kind of a bleak year for games, though. Most of the games worth playing were remakes or re-releases, and most of the good new titles were just kind of mediocre. And RDR2 was kind of a disappointment.

To be fair, there's an argument to be made in this day and age that every distributor direct shipping to customers should be providing tracking numbers and shipping confirmation via e-mail. If they're not doing so, it's valid to question why. And if you have no knowledge of who a distributor is or how to contact them, it's also valid to complain about the issue to the company using that distributor. If nothing else, knowledge of problems may lead them to switch distributors in the future.

Sort of.

I normally try to go to a party where people watch, but if none of my friends are hosting one I generally don't bother watching.

But even when someone does have a party, usually it's more of a social occasion where people are only half paying attention to the game (and even less to the commercials and half-time, which mostly suck these days), so I'm watching, but I'm also drinking, and wandering around talking to people, and probably missing large chunks of the game.

Dont you have to play like 100 times to get all the endings. I heard that when you play a second time, they mention how you played the first time or something. So, you have to play a lot to get all the endings... From what Ive heard...

The opposite is sort of true. The game essentially punishes you if you do anything other than get the best ending first time, and then never play again.

Possibly confused with Carrie, or The Omen, or even Assault on Precinct 13.

Especially since The Shining blatantly feels like a 70s movie. Even after the first time I saw it I assumed it was from the mid-70s until I eventually saw the actual date and was like "Wha...?"

That being said, you could probably figure out what she was thinking of based on what month her birthday is. Carrie (the actual Stephen King movie that year) came out in November, and The Omen came out in June.

Probably wouldn't be Precinct 13, that really isn't a scary movie at all.

It's also possible she got the right movie but the wrong year. Or the wrong year AND movie (Amityville Horror was 1977, for instance).
