I'd say no, but that's less about the game's objective value to gaming as a whole and more about the fact that it's not the sort of game I want to play, so it could be the most perfect expression of what it was trying to be and it still wouldn't be worthwhile to me at all.

2019 was kind of a bleak year for games, though. Most of the games worth playing were remakes or re-releases, and most of the good new titles were just kind of mediocre. And RDR2 was kind of a disappointment.

I wish I could say GreedFall or Outer Worlds were GOTY material, but both of them felt so lacking compared to what they could have been, or should have been.

I enjoyed sekiro, but wouldn't consider it a GOTY contender if 2019 hadn't been so lackluster. The only games that really stood out this past year were niche titles like disco elysium.

Not even close.

Sekiro's garbage and RE2 got robbed hard.

Hell, I'd put DMC5 over Sekiro.

I had zero interest in Sekiro.

Not really interested in games where "it's hard" is the main focus of the game.

agreed. I played all the way through bloodborne and thought it kinda sucked. More stressful than fun.

I think thats a silly reason to dismiss a game. "Hard" isnt the genre of the game and doesnt describe game mechanics or the type of game it is.

Kinda.

But you see terms like "metroidvania" or "souls-like" tossed around in ways that have basically made them become a genre, or damn near to it. In the case of "souls-like" it's a game were "difficulty" is more important than any other aspect of the game. I don't care for that.

Just look at the top 2 tags. https://store.steampowered.com/app/814380/Sekiro_Shadows_Die_Twice/

i think you'd normally have a point but sekiro is made by the souls people

A vocal community of people who like hard games love the souls series and other From Software titles, but that's never really been the focus of the games themselves. Exploring large yet carefully crafted levels full of environmental storytelling has always been the selling point to me. The souls series and sekiro both share many similarities to games like metroid prime and the 3d zelda games, albeit with a very different combat system. They're definitely not for everyone, but they do have a lot of cool experiences to offer beyond being hard.

Niertomato was more of a complete experience, with a plot that was somewhat convoluted, somewhat telegraphed and somewhat silly, gameplay that had very few frustrating bits. Whereas Sekiro I haven't played but a friend who loves Souls did, and he said he lots a fair bit of nerves over it while the sense of accomplishment he got back wasn't worth the hassle

Doesm't that depend on how well you know the game, and how many campaigns you go through? I know it took me longer than that for one campaign. And I only did Claire's A-side. I didn't play Leon's A-side, or either's B-side yet...

neirtomato's had a good concept with good story and music but that game was like six hours long
another 1/3rd of the game was re-doing stuff over and over, oh and did I mention the game was easy? Like anyone and I mean anyone could beat that game.

Sekiro was miyazaki pulling a fast one on casual noobs, it was truly great for what it was, but I don't think he'd be ballsy enough to try that again, the dorks will complain too much when they realize they can't cheese the majority of bosses with multiplayer and fast rolls.

I played sekiro through once, including the optional bosses, and I did not really enjoy it. I gave it every chance and ehhh it just wasn't my style/I wasn't a fan. I liked Nioh a HELL of a lot more than Sekiro for games with similar settings.

Sekiro was good, and was probably the best 2019 game I played (which isn't saying much since nothing came out).

And while I hugely appreciate the difficulty and awesome gameplay, I also think that From overdid it on purpose in order to hide how short and relatively shallow the game is.

both Dark Souls 3 and this were great but suffered quite a bit from being rushed I think. neither of them are what they could have been.

I haven't played Sekiro or Nier: Automata. I have heard many good things about Nier: A. And good things about Sekiro, as well. Idk what I would have chosen. Maybe RE2 or Spiderman. I really many other games, as well. But those were the ones I think I would have probably chosen for GotY...

Its about one-and-a-half hours if you know what youre doing. For the new game they called RE2 and the original proper RE2.
