What? Can't say anything about 2k20, but 2k19 was far from that.

2k19 was about shitting on the independent scene and anyone wrestling outside of the WWE. 2k20 was basically shitting on wrestling fans. In both your main character is basically a moron and a loser out of the gate (in 2k19 you kind of improve, in 2k20 you kind of don't). And it's only worse because of how the game mechanics work, where you basically start out as an inept dingus and have to grind your way to better moves, a cooler look, and actual stats.

It's a far cry from the days when you'd basically come in to story mode as a badass and got to feel cool right out of the gate.

Though in that sense, I suppose it's an accurate representation of how WWE books these days - they haven't been able to get anyone massively over for more than a decade now.

Is this good? I've been on the fence about this one

Probably depends on what you're looking for.

My opinion of it is mostly based on watching other people play it online. And I dislike platormers in general and Metroidvania-type games specifically, so you definitely need to take that into account when I'm reviewing something.

But it looks like a relatively fun time-waster. I definitely wouldn't pay $60 for it, and I'm not sure I'd even want to pay $30 for it (which is what they're actually charging), but if goes on sale for less I might consider it.

It almost sort of feels like a stripped-down version of No Man's Sky aesthetically, except there's actually goals. Neither the platforming or the combat seems overly complicated (which is a plus for me, but maybe a negative for others), and the doubling back to earlier areas to use new upgrades seems relatively simplistic (though I've really only seen the early parts of gameplay), so if you're looking for challenging gameplay it might disappoint.

The narrative mostly tries to be humorous (I've heard it described as a "less subtle Outer Worlds", which I'd agree is an apt description), which could be a plus for some people and a negative for others (but it's part of the appeal for me). And there are implications of a deeper plot early, but I have no idea if those actually pay off later, or lead to absolutely nothing (because again, I've really only seen the early parts of gameplay).

Most of the story modes in sports games I've played through are all bastardized versions of Rocky. Not so much the first Rocky, but the later films where there's some semi-villainous adversary (Clubber Lang/Ivan Drago).

"Up-and-coming [spin the sport roulette wheel] phenom faces personal and professional hurdles on their path to professional greatness. Can they overcome the odds and best [insert asshole heel-type] to become the champion?"

For the last two WWE games, the plot basically boils down to "Anyone who likes wrestling or wants to be a wrestler is a pathetic loser, so now you're going to play through 10 hours worth of us basically making fun of you."

I'll take Rocky over that. At least Rocky is attempting to be inspirational.

isn't that pretty much the same thing?

I'm assuming they mean the difference between games that have long-term season modes where you track stats and you're building up a team or a specific player over time, and games where you're literally playing as someone going through a pre-written storyline.

Personally, I've long since ceased to care about anything resembling a sports game in general. The one type I held onto longer than any others was the WWE games, but I went off them completely when they decided that things like "arcade-style play" and "fun" were less important than "online play" and "pathetic attempts to be more of a simulation". And then doubly so when they decided that it would be really neat to lock everything behind purchase walls and force you to either grind like crazy or spend money on microtransactions to even build up a single wrestler who wasn't shit. That's pretty much the exact opposite reason why I ever played those games in the first place.

But back when I did still play them, story mode was like 90% of the reason why (the other 10% was making insane create-a-wrestlers and stables and occasionally simulating matches between them).

The fact that the newer games HAVE story modes has piqued by interest at least a few times, but the fact that those story modes all seem vaguely insulting to the player and so terrible they seem to have been written by concussed baboons means they've never really led me to ever buy one of those games.

I'm kind of interested to see what AEW winds up doing with their inevitable game, since they've mentioned wanting them to be more like older titles, which would be right up my alley. If they have a somewhat fun and irreverent but well-written story mode, that pretty much sells me on the game right there.

Most of the political humor I despise comes across like "When the other side does stuff I don't like I'm going to tear them a new asshole via venomous mockery and humorous abuse, but when my side does the exact same thing it's okay." That's what usually triggers my "Shut up, both sides suck, and you treating a political party like they're your local sports team is half the reason we have these problems" response whenever people whine about politics.

That's a thing I dislike about Star Wars in general - they seem absolutely unwilling to allow for moral complexity 99% of the time. If you're bad you're a mustache-twirling villain, and if you have ANY ambiguity at all, you're going to redeem yourself and become a hero before the story is over.

Just once I'd like to see Imperials who are good people but who don't wind up betraying the Empire before the story ends, and who actually have moral reasons for supporting the Empire. Or even just Imperial main characters who ARE unrepentant bastards and who stay unrepentant bastards. That was one of the (many) things that discouraged me from caring about the single-player campaign in Battlefront 2.

NightMareBunny posted...
agents of shield was basically no name original characters most of the time with the actual marvel characters rarely doing much in the long run

Nearly every character that appeared WAS an actual character from the comics, though, and often characters who were never going to get movies of their own or show up in anyone else's , so it was nice for them to get a bit of time in the spotlight somewhere.

The real problem with Agents of SHIELD was that Disney wanted to push integration between the movies and the TV show, but corporate politics between Marvel Studios (the film division) and Marvel Television (the TV division) meant that the films categorically refused to acknowledge anything that happened on TV (and essentially treated it all as non-canon), while the TV show wound up being forced to acknowledge everything that happened in the films (which played havoc with their own plotting and planning).

The storylines where the show responded to what was happening in the movies tended to be some of the better episodes, though. Which implies it would have been pretty awesome if there had actually been anything resembling reciprocity.

It feels like Disney put their foot down and called bullshit on that sort of thing, though, which is why the Disney+ shows are apparently under the Marvel Studios umbrella rather than the Marvel Television one. Disney basically folded the TV division directly into the movie division, so there can be greater interaction and coordination between the two (which is why it looks like the Scarlet Witch, Falcon/Winter Soldier, and Loki shows will all technically be canon to the films, and may include a greater degree of cross-pollination between the two).

Start by completely re-casting the entire film. Idris Elba was NOT Roland.

Since we can't travel back in time and kidnap Clint Eastwood from the 1970s to play Roland, who would you cast?

He might get getting a bit too old for the role at this point as well, but how would you feel about someone like Nathan Fillion in the role? Keep in mind, if we're talking about a TV show, you have to cast someone low-enough tier that they'd be willing to accept working on a TV show, and young enough to potentially last for multiple seasons, but old enough to be believable as the character. That kind of restricts casting a bit.

The other thing to consider is that Amazon was going to make a Dark Tower TV show, but when the movie tanked they backed off the idea.

GreenKnight127 posted...
Start the show during Wizard and Glass. Work its way up to The Gunslinger.

I kind of disagree. I think you need to start with Gunslinger (where Roland is both at his coolest, and where you can focus on him without having other characters as distractions - especially characters who will ALL be dead soon), and work your way to Wizard and Glass as a flashback. If extremely clever, you can pull a Highlander and have flashback scenes interspersed with modern-day scenes, alternating, where it's very obvious that the situation in the past reflects the situation in the present.

I dunno this doesnt seem like that big of a deal

The main problem is that the entire point of license plates is to serve as ID, not so people can get vanity boners.

And while you might love the idea of having a plate that is just four poop emojis in a row, more obscure emojis in combination can make it extremely difficult for anyone to actually ID your plate number (Umm, he was smiley, crying guy, poop, confetti, unicorn, and a sort of confused looking guy, maybe?).

The counter-point is that we live in a world full of cameras, so in theory no one is writing plate numbers own or reading them out loud as opposed to just taking a quick picture with their phone, but a) there ARE still people who don't have camera phones, and b) from a distance it might be harder to distinguish between emojis.

Though at this point, give us another decade or two and most new cars may be self-driving and GPS-chipped anyway, rendering license plates entirely useless.

Yes but it doesn't matter since Lucas himself supported the expanded universe.

"Supported".

Saying the equivalent of "Yeah, I don't give a fuck what they do, because none of it counts and I'm going to ignore it all anyway, but they can pretend it's canon if it sells more books to fanboys" really isn't a sweeping endorsement.

The whole reason they invented the whole bullshit multi-tier canon system was basically so they could lie and pretend everything was canon when almost nothing was really canon in any meaningful sense.

Disney, for all that people shit on them (and not for no reason), at least tends to make at least minor attempts to integrate the things they say are canon (like the cartoons) into the overarching narrative (ie, having the films or TV shows reference stuff from comics and books). They've done more to legitimately endorse their own EU than Lucas ever did.

But to this day I literally cannot say the word "Shining" without pronouncing it "Shinning" in Bart's tone of voice, so that one certainly had more impact on me.

Like I mentioned in the other topic, this might be the best Treehouse episode of all time in my opinion. If not, it's certainly right up there.

You've put far more mathematical thought into it than I ever have at any point in my entire life.

Round pizza? Cut it in 8 slices.

That's pretty much the sum total of the thought I've ever put into it.

The first one has a more concise story, the second is more enjoyable overall. The third one is easily the worst of the three.

I wanted to do the 8/10 thing but I felt the new age of POTD wouldn't appreciate it.

Perfect post.
